Hue shifting? I think it's called.

Anyways, the portrait. The dithering, if it's even that, is very chaotic and messy. It seems like you just randomly put dots in places, and doesn't make anything blend well.
As for the castle sidescroller. The difference in tones between dithering is too different, and even with dithering it doesn't seem too smooth, and stands out a lot.

I worked from a normal photograph for the portrait and the guy sitting down.  I was just experimenting with the small color change.  I'm curious how do people usually do hue shifting?

As far as the dithering on the portrait, I see what you mean, I'll try to smooth that out when I get a chance.

What would you suggest to make the shadows smoother in the castle one?
