[WIP] Small dragon. Animation.

on: April 25, 2007, 11:41:55 am
This sketch for small dragons. I try to choose one of their.
Which one? Or maybe combination head from this one and body from other? I think on this, maybe anybody help with this not easily choose.
I will give live many of this sketch, but some later, now I must take one or maybe some repaint.

I have tile 32x64, later this dragon will be animated in this size tile (as a puppy from another my topic).

6 or 7 I would like to see animated the most.  To me they seem more natural.
Back from hiatus, just remembered how excellent this community is at forming technique in a fledgeling artist of any kind.

all look pretty good. I would rule out 2,3,4,5, and 9 as they don't seem to portray the dragon like character enough to me.

I definitely like 10 the best. The others' heads don't really convey the sharp, slick qualities I'd expect from a dragon. 8 is good too. I think the wings on these two are very good, and are necessary to make it really 'feel' like a dragon.

are you looking for a small dragon , like a short dragon or a baby dragon?
for the first, I think 6, 8 and 10 are a good choice imo, 10 seems to be more adult than the others to me..
for baby dragons, 9 and 11..
difficult to chosse yeah..

Between those two, I like 2 better.  1's beak looks odd, like it'd get in his way.  I like the green skin, the others don't have the hue shift for the secondary color, so it doesn't pop as much.

Very cute, I love dragons.

The first sketch animation for the boy:
on surface:

in stripe:

I like this motion, but this motion - it's small jumps, i tried do another motion like a varan (giant lizard), maybe this will be more useful... will see.

dragonrc Thanks - after you edit, i think a one-color skin is unless, just all colors will be with light front side (like on you edit)

Very nice, although I think a more lizard-like animation would be more easily recognizable, this reminds me more of a dog run animation...

If you decide to keep this, i suggest making his head move forward and down more with each step, showing more weight, and make the forward paws step further front, and cross his back legs when he takes a step with the hind legs (like racing dogs do while running).

This actually looks more like how a rabbit would move rather than a large lizard.
Maybe studying the movements of a kimodo dragon would help some?

No about head, but Yes about other, most likely. ))  Maybe I decide this move, but for dragon-girl. And I have only 32x64 for animation - I fear this not enough for long throw of back legs, but I am try.

Yes komodo dragon, large lizard - next move will be something like this...

Which of type animation is more appropriate for this?

Thanks Adarias, it's better? If I right understand you.

As I say earlier, I use small jump's for animation girl-dragon. And fixed some frame - something as you say, Turbo.

Maybe need the same animation for both?

add one extra frame showing his front arms pushing to the ground even more. For a jump like that he needs to push with his front arms more than that. I would also add one extra frame to make his back(rear part of the character) one pixel higher.
my way of the pixel? -> minimum effort, maximum quality 0_0

In addition to what piotrek said, I think his landing could be more staggered, either with his front or hind legs landing before the other pair. I'm loving the animations so far, though; super adorable. :)

Great animation, as usual from you :)

Minor stuff, if you've got the time and interest:
On the walking anim, the head seems to pop around too much, i'd try to make it smoother (maybe simulate some subpixel movement, reptiles tend to be very fluid on their movement). Maybe make the head move one frame later than the body, to simulate some bouncyness and dampening of the body movement (as any creature moves, the body tries to dampen the shocks and bumps from the floor, so that it doesn't get headaches with jittery movement :) ).

On the jumping anim, it looks nice. I'd suggest on the frame where he's falling to the ground, stretching the lizard (with some deformation) to show the speed of the movement.

Dragon say "No!"

Variation of lie. Maybe first position more readability? But second more impressive. The third it's a something strange, maybe put head under wing...

Position - sit.

He is very like something (like a fawn from dogs).

Move for girl-dragon

Fot Turbo:
Thanks! head on walk is pop around, because it's displacement this sprite on surface is constant (4 down, 2 forward pixels). And when put this animation from surface to stripe, than you see head bounce, but on surface this is not the case, if I right understand you ))))
For jumping, I think I try it.

Dragonrc, I am try do this step like a giant lizard, and he is not move head when he creep, but thanks, i try it, maybe it's better... maybe... I donn't know now ))
More animation:
Colored jump with improved landing:

Animation for lie:

Dragon want playing )) Nice, but something strange in his move wings and face maybe more happy?...

His be tired:

Dragon is feel angry:

And sketch for very wrathful. Not finish last frames, need added one or two in end stripe for landing. And this fire is NOT big, because stripe have only the 32 px for width ((( Becuase I am do some deformation for his body... Something thinks?:

I like your angry animation. I'd like to see it with no head movement or slight head movement of a pixel only. This way I think it'd seem even angrier by drawing more attention to the nose flaring.

i agree, i think slower head movements would make it seem like its taking deep breaths.  A lot more emphasise on the nose flare and perhaps the head should go backward instead of up/down.

These are all great animations.

On the angry animation, try making the ends of his wings flap back a little, see if that looks better.

The firebreathing animation is looking good, except I don't like how his hands jerk like that. Maybe let them jerk outstretched all the way back?
"Baboy" is Filipino for pig.

truly amazing, but this fire breath animation could be a little bit slower, i mean, his head moves too much and too fast
my way of the pixel? -> minimum effort, maximum quality 0_0

i like it! although is it truly likely that its head will stay in the exact same position? not turning on its side a little or moving up? just straight forward and back?

piotrek255 I give some delay, but I think it not need more, because it's must be some like a scare anybody, not attack.

chigsam Thank you! Yes head still in same position - because he use his head like a crosshair and firebreathing do mainly with help a body, not throw fire by head. Of course if I understand correctly you message )))

Also added light on hands, face and belly

Wow, the firebreathing is looking so good :y:
My only crit is that it looks like the dragon only has 3 legs in the eating animation.

I've gotta pop in here and agree with others who are saying that this is nice.  The only crits I can see are ones that others have brought up: the tongue in the playing animation looks strange and his front-left leg is missing in the eating animation.  I really like the firebreathing animation; the fading is very well done.  The only thing I might crit on that is that it doesn't go very far.  If the fire sprays out that far in one frame, I'd think it would maintain at least a little momentum and keep moving rather than suddenly stopping.  It looks nice as it is, but I think it would be even better if it continued to move forward as it faded.

These look quite nice; I look forward to seeing more if such exitst.
