In need of some hints

on: October 18, 2005, 08:23:03 pm
Hi,

this is my first attempt of a serious pixel image. It is wall for a indoor tileset and it just doesn't work out right.

I need advice. So please, do some C&C!

Post some examples of walls using these tiles. It's hard to tell the usefullness of a tile without seeing it in action.

It's not the tiling that bothers me (that will come later ;) ).

I can't get the transistion from the plastering to the bricks look right in the tile in the middle. These are 32x32 tiles. And the bricks look somewhat boring.

But you are right, these are tiles. I'll tile 'em!

But yeah, there is no variation, looks very repetetive.

You can use this principle to make video game like or SNES looking pixels: The lighter the more it will go into yellow and the darker the more into will go into blue." It also allows you to create more interesting colors.

If you just need a simple half-plster, half-brick tile then make just that. Make sure the plaster forms around the shape of the brick like in that one part-brick tile you have. Use some dithering to show the appearance of less plaster and maybe put little dots of plaster on the brick side and it should work good.  Try posting your failed attempt as well. It might look like crap to you, but we might think it works well.

tadaa: failed attempt.

I am not sure if I will continue working on this. Maybe I'll try to find some good reference and then start from scratch.

cheers

no, actually this is quite better than your first attempt for an intermediate tile. You just need quite a few variations, not the same thing like

AAAAABCCCCC
AAAABBCCCCC
AAAABABACCC
AAAABCCCCC

this won't look very good if A is white, B is half white half brick and C is brick.

Also, don't be afraid to make a few intermediate tiles that are two tiles wide or even 4 in a square.

I've invented a new game in the last few hours. It's called the bricks-and-bleeding-eyes game.
Everything re-done completely.

The tiles so far:

I see no problem with these tiles so far. Now be brave and make them fade to the first white wall type of texture!

Hi,

didn't have much time over the last week. Just wanted to post what I've got so far.

You think it's the right direction?

Wow man, this is the first thread on pixelation I've ever seen in my life where someone can improve so much in such little time. It looks great right now, no repetitiveness, colors are great, it just look awesome. Don't give up on these becuase you're doing great. Now you can maybe make windows, missing bricks, and such?
