Angelic warrior

on: April 08, 2007, 08:26:30 pm
Ugh... I always start on a bazillion different pieces, never finishing any of them. But lately I've been trying to redeem myself by going through my HUGE scrapheap of unfinished art, finishing everything that seems worthy, and tossing out everything else. I also promised myself not to start anything new until this is all done, and after that I will only take on one thing at the time. :B

Anyway, this one I actually started a year ago, and I only just decided to finish it.

Holy Cat.

This is fucking amazing.Yes.. Fucking amazing.

Only one thing.. the whole axe thingy, the blades.. look like.. eh, horns? Spikes.. Perhaps thats the way you wanted it, but i think it would have looked better if it was shaded like a blade.. something really shiny :). Perhaps i might make an edit. If thats now needed, i hope you get what im trying to say :P.

Wow....Just wow...

I don't know what to say about enhancing because I really don't have an eye for close details but wow...This is such a nice piece of work

Holy crap! But her arm is positioned wrong... :>
This is just beatifull, the anatomy, the colours, the shading, the AA, it all comes together perfectly.
You can barely tell it is pixel art.

Smooth coloring! I'm digging the palette.

The rightmost knee bothers me a little, since it appears to be at the same depth as the thigh on the left (rather than out front). The cloth "halo" around the top of the knee adds to the illusion that the knee is connected directly to the hip.

Oh my... it's gorgeous! I'm not going to speculate in how many hours you put into it. The only negative thing I can point out is the very same as bb did. Other than that, I love it.

As usual with pieces with formidable pixeling skill, I tried to look for fundamental anatomy errors, but I had trouble finding any.  Great job.

Welp, another piece of pixelart for me to study and learn from. Thanks. I couldn't find anything wrong, honestly. Nice BG, nice Weapon, nice anatomy and beautiful wings.

This is brilliant, and your color choices superb. My only criticism is the lighting on right wing. The rest of the piece the light source appears to be from the top left, but the wing it appears to be more to the right.

Thanks for the comments, guys!

I tried editing the cloth around her knee. Does this help?

How long did you spend on this?

Do you really want to know?  :D

Nearly a 100 hours.

Yes, I'm insane, not to mention incredibily slow.  :-[

It's fantastic.

.. only crit I can think of is that there's some aliasing around the wings. Did you leave it like that intentionally or did you simply forget the AA?

Other than that, I love it. And wow, 100 hours. I admire your patience.

Hey, the longer you spend, the better it gets. Also, for people like us who tend to start making something then just find something else to do, it'd be stupid to NOT work on the same piece for ages if you finally manage to focus enough to do so.

This is absolutely beautiful. I like the wings, I adore the hair, and I really really love the sky and color choice throughout the whole thing. The wings could've probably been more dynamic looking since she's in the air and in some awesome pose and all, but since it took me ten minutes of staring to notice that, I think you can afford to do nothing about that. Also, I have no idea how to go about making them look more dynamic if you chose to remake them.. so...

Freaking well done.

I think it's terrible. The palette is bleh, the anatomy is off, everything is just designed awfully, and the hair, the hair is just eye-burning-bad.

Oops, seems I was in an alternate-reality for a second there... I really meant everything the opposite of what was said above.  ;D

yup, I've stared at it for quite a while, so long that I feel guilty having not posted yet
but really, I can't say anything that hasn't been said, only gripe is her left knee does have the depth issues people have mentioned, other than that, I just can't help but think where I would've cut corners :P
those arms look excellent, not awkward at all, wings and hair are great too, and they sky is like extra credit :y:

seriously, great work, I haven't seen anything from you that had me thinking you needed to redeem yourself, but whatever drives you ;)

Thank you for your kind words!

I was hoping it would add some kind of texture to the wings, instead of oversoftening everything.

You haven't seen my graveyard of unfinished pieces.  :D

i thirst for progress shots.

Unfortunately, I haven't saved any progress shots. I have to remember that for my next piece.

Firstly, I'd like to say how impressed I am by this piece, and that I (as a chronic procrastinator) admire you for seeing such a large, and ambitious piece through.
And now for my only crit: the staircase shading on her right bicep is creating a weird banding effect on my monitor, causing it to lack the same level of smoothness seen in the rest of the piece. I'm not sure exactly how you can fix it, or why it's only occuring in this place (as there are others with similar shading), but I think it would be a shame to leave it unattended.

I look forward to seeing you finish the rest of the works in your folder. :y:

I see what you mean, and that's one area I've been struggling with. I'm not sure how to fix it either, because it's a rather smooth and tube-like part. With the other arm I had more muscle detail and some reflected light to cling on to. :-[

heres a quick edit on the bicep

i dithered what you had and used a shade from the hair to act as a buffer between your two darkest skin tones.
i noticed that on my other monitor the dithering didn't look so good though.

another way to get rid of the banding is to use the colours you currently have as buffer shades. this effectively lowers the amount of usuable shades you have though and volume may be lost. you could also add buffer shades but i don't think you want to do this with such a nice colour count.
thanks Dogmeat!

Okay, I did some minor editing based on the feedback here and at Pixel Joint. Yay or nay?

@ eobet: I tried that, but it makes the weapon look very disjointed. Having both a golden color, a silvery color and a copper color on one item looks really weird.
