Sweater Kaneda

on: March 26, 2007, 02:21:28 pm
Because pill-jackets are overrated...

..well, the pants are obviously unfinished, and i'm having trouble.  i've never been the best with pants, so i was hoping to
get some helpful feedback on this one.
by all means, please give me some critique on this one.

Bloomin' awesome sweater. Looks great. I love hoe you've coloured it.

The pants, overall seem in good shape.I think defining the knee with fold would look good, keeping them rather darker.

like the texture on the wooly sweater. The collar doesn't read as well as the rest of the image though, I think it needs more separation from the first white stripe.

AKKIIIRAAA.

anyway.
his hands seem a little too close to his crotch. and the combination of that look on his face and the hands-on-crotch is interesting.
nice werk though.
thanks Dogmeat!

First thing I noticed is the collar, it should have more volume - a sweater isn't paper thin. I'd move it up a pixel or two.

The little white highlight pixels on the red parts of the sweater look wrong to me. At least the ones on the arm don't work for me.

There's a red stripe that looks like it gets cut off near the elbow.

i'm not sure if you know this, but Kaneda wears a shirt underneath the sweater, and i was hoping that it would look like the collar is coming out from behind the sweater. either way, i did a small edit on the collar to try and seperate it a little bit more and bring it up a bit, as you suggested. and you were right about the red stripe, i totally missed it when doing one of my edits.
also, newer version of the pants, and i think i'm done with them, unless someone just absolutley hates them..
so...is this thing nearing 100% or what?

Great improvement on the original, its always nice to see that.

I am loving the whole picture, except I would just think that on his left leg you would not be able to see his ankle? Or am I wrong there? That's just in contrast to the right leg, is all.
Apart from that, nothing seems too wrong or out of place to me, good work!

ok. that's it. done.  :'( (tears of joy) a few minor edits. i'll probably be the only one who notices them, but oh well

well, i made it so that the bottom of each pant leg lined up, and just drew in some ankles.  i wanted the cuffs to be a little high, so i guess i'm going to leave it like that.
anyway, thanks for all the help with this project, and now i'll go ahead and start on Tetsuo...

Are you sure this is finished? I see a lot you could do to make it better. You use 22 colors where you don't need more than 16. You had three colors that were just used for a few pixels each. If that's a sweater, why not dither it to give it a sweater texture? Your darkest shades were too close to black, both getting lost in it, and making a big jump from the darkness to the main shades, which is easy to fix. The knees were too high I think. The shoes were in a flat perspective that doesn't help this piece I feel. There's so much pixel-level aa and tweaking that would go a long way to make this much better. The colors could be made to work a bit better together, pull it closer a bit. Do you really need the black outline? In my edit I didn't use one but I don't think I'm losing any distinction or getting any blurry limbs or anything. On the pants, why not try the dithering tint thing, it gives it pleasant texture and hue variation.

latest edit:
taking pretty much all of the advice you gave, i've done a major overhaul with your edit as a reference. i'm still not done, obviously, but this was a big step forward.
i have to admit, this is the first time someone has made an edit of my work, and it was a little awkward feeling, but honestly, it made me learn to be a better pixel artist, so thanks.
oh yeah, i kept the knees a the same hight  :D

I liked your older one more. The new edit removed a lot of the contrast and personality. The new one just feels a lot more blurry and grey - his hair looks more greasy rather than shiny, and the way you removed the outline from the left arm makes it seem thinner and well, awkward.

The knees are too high in yours as Helm stated. The upperleg bone is the longest bone in the human body. Like this he looks really odd to me.
There are no ugly colours, only ugly combinations of colours.

Great job man. Looks good. I agree with Helm on that one about the  sweater. A dithering can make the sweater look more sweaty :D. His left shoe is pillow shaded. It's alirhgt to leave in my opinion. You can change it if you like.

i don't know. i played around with a couple different ways of changing the straight line left leg, but they all looked awkward. i think your edit makes him look like he has a freaky, deformed super knee. especially compared to the other knee.

You could try lightening the leg's outline (even more than what you're already doing). Adarias gave an excellent explanation in http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=1514.msg18356#msg18356.

Not that you have to fix, that part isn't bothering me the least bit. Up to you :)
