Fly Fishing Pixel Art Collection

on: August 27, 2019, 02:16:18 pm
Good morning all,

Long time lurker, finally registered.
I love pixel art, got into during highschool, worked on all sorts of small projects, mostly the typical RPG/fantasy genre.
Fast forward several years - I had moved onto other things in life and completely stopped doing pixel art. Never saw myself getting back into.
However, approximately 8 months ago, I finally started designing an idea that I had for a while - making a pixel art fishing game, specifically one about fly fishing. It was very difficult to get back into pixel art after 15+ year hiatus, but I am proud of what I eventually managed to produce. I'm interested in hearing your thoughts on the general art direction and overall feel of the following:

Sprites:

Character animations:

Here are several environmental scenes from the game:

Fish:

Here are several gameplay scenes:

I've gone for a minimalist, relaxed, natural look. Hopefully I accomplished it! Thanks for taking the time to check out my foray back into pixel art :)

I love a well done minimal style. And you've done a great job so far. I'm not sure you'll get to much feedback about the art, its mostly to a high standard, sure there might be a few minor inconsistencies here and there, but I think you'll naturally iron them out through the process of creating your game.

Good job on the style. Seen it before, but it's clean, mostly well done. Some inconsistent stuff there, like the flat pine trees in the environment pic. Some of the colors you can take further. I'm thinking mostly value adjustments, but a lot of games in this style get away with funky schemes. Can't make an edit here with the image upscaling.

The deer's spazzing out  Recommend looking up some good four-legged walks/gallop as reference.

The gameplay scenes look like the pixels aren't being displayed properly. They're bleeding colors into their neighbors.

Unless this is an effect you want, it could be due to compression on the images themselves, or it could be a rendering issue in your game engine.

How do the images compare with the actual gameplay screens?

When it comes to the other images, if you upload them as PNG files with no pixel resizing (1 pixel is represented as 1 pixel) then it allows people looking at the board to zoom the images themselves (by clicking on them) or make edits to them to demonstrate a point.
