On January 1st, 2007, 4AM EST, I launched the one simple pixel project (http://www.onesimplepixel.com). I am attempting to create one single image, 1000 x 1000 pixels in size, through the collective contributions of 1,000,000 people. Each person chooses one single pixel and personalizes it by giving it a name, choosing its color and optionally a comment or quote for the rest of the world to see. The theories are countless. Many first thought the result will just be a collection of random pixels. However as the image slowly appears it makes one wonder “what will the image actually become?” Only one million people contributing to the one simple pixel project can answer that question.

If you guys got any other ideas, let me know.  Please give me some feedback.  Please tell others.  1 million is a long way to go :)

Also, please not that many elements of the site will be changing soon to make it easier and cooler.  However, for now it is what it is.  It is hard to find time to work on this stuff when you have a full time job.

I don't understand how random pixels, with random colors, can create any image, besides static.
The above post may not be helpful at all, as the author usually has no idea what he is talking about.

Wouldn't it be better to give people a specific size limit and ask them to add some kind've sprite or something for a theme. A few hundred of those would look pretty cool if you ask me.

Why don't you set a few specific colours ramps instead, and then give people the mission to fill a small square (10x10, 30x30 or something) with a picture using either of those ramps. Then you can pixel a huge piece using everyone's small ones. I think it would be easier to get something out of that in the end.

All of these ideas I have considered and plan to do these in the future (at least some variants).

It should be noted that these aren't random.  Human's making a decision, in some cases, might seem random but in the end a person chose the color and location for a reason.

The cool thing to see are the "constellations" emerging.  There are 6 so far.

What do I mean by constellation?  An intentional grouping that I believe will encourage others to add to the constellation.

---

Here is a thought...do you think the community here would be interested in attempting to develop a single image in a 30x30 or 50x50 one pixel at time?

No. A single pixel each isn't a meaningful artistic collaboration.

Ok then, if this isn't "meaningful" please provide an example of what is an example of a meaningful pixel artistic collaboration?

Two people working together on a piece with a result that is not a bunch of noise?

I understand your point about the constellations forming, and it is interesting, but not from a pixel-art point of view, maybe from an anthropologic point of view (observing how each person's choice was made not at random, but for a reason, and how others flock to the same area to create a 'culture'). But in the realm of pixel art, this is pretty moot.

Overall, the focus really isn't on the final product from a pixel standpoint. The only thing generating interest is the comments people leave.

Almost any where you've got more than a singular pixel to work with.

Uhm, the site doesn't work, dunno what script u are usin', but it randomly throws stuff.
see: http://www.hot.ee/tindiplekk/pask.GIF I get different stuff with each refreshing.

As for the idea itself, it might work as a collaboration in pixeljoint, but not in a random place with million random people who mostly arent so artistic and collaborative.
