Peices of shit? I do say, these are quite nice for first peices. On the spriteish guy, there is one sahde on the hat (the tan one) that is unnessecary. If you cannot tell it is there, it's not nesscecary..sort of :-[ I really like the toucan looking thing :) Keep it up.

These are rather nice beginnings, too.  I think that, while they both have some things lacking due to inexperience, they both show significant strengths that i think demonstrate your future prowess with the media :P

the first piece has a few too many colors which makes it a little bit hard to read, but the readability of the forms is very nice.

the toucanish one has a very nice understanding of colors, but is a bit overtextured/overdithered.

If you could combine the color use of the latter with the sleek look of the former, you could have some really good stuff very soon, and then you can begin really getting into things :).

Welcome to the verbal part of the forum ^^

Hey, dude, these are your first pixels? Pretty friggin awesome I'd say. Yus bird's got a cousin, looks like. Also looks like you had some white hilights on the hat of the first dude but the bg was the same color so the hilights got transparent along with it. I'm not too fond of the random dithering on the bird's near wing. Love that beak though. And the whole head.
Awesome stuff, man. Welcome to Pixelation, relax, enjoy yourself, make yourself at home, all that jazz.

Ooo Adarias wicked new avatar ;D

MOD EDIT: Not only do you post an one-liner, you also quote a whole post for no reason, and on top of that, the one-liner is praise for a different member's avatar. Please be more careful or I will have to become more drastic.

i don't think it was necessary to quote the entire post there just to tell him you like his new avatar (i find the purple overwhelming... ah! getting sidetracked) or to derail the thread, really.

Anyway, I think that the white highlight on the hat in the first piece got caught and it turned transparent, not sure. I like the second piece's dithering a lot. Looks like Yus Bird... well, his distant cousin, at least.

Very good stuff. (and welcome.)

Edit: wow, how did i post the EXACT same thing as Xion without even reading his reply... xD   guess i should do that more often.

Great stuff, man. Nice vibrant palettes and good readibility.

You could try smoothening some of the jagged lines with the colors you already have. Just a minor nitpick though.

Post more!!! :)

Yeah I would have liked to, but don't really know how
I don't know if I should use darker or lighter color.. it depends of the background right? ???

That is VERY nice.  You have some talent there :), as for the fish tank, it could use some highlights on the glass(relfections, etc), it looks very dark, and not glassy right now.

thanks,

for the reflections, actually I tried, but I didn't like it because it was killing the readibility so I removed it ..  :)
maybe I didn't find the good way to do them too..

here is a new WIP, for the weekly contest on Joint..
don't really know what to think.. not easy to read I think.. and not super happy with the colors..

we can use 16 colors ,and I think I'm around 13 right now..
C&C very welcome  :P

That new one's awesome! Looks like it could be the title screen for a game or somethin'. I think the mountains in the BG could be  distorted through the glass bubble, though. Same for the ship. I really like the ship. It looks a bit messy, too.

The forms and readability are nice, what it needs is pixel-art finish. AA, dithering when you need it and cohesion in the palette.

Xion> thx, yeah I will try to work a bit more the bubble , refraction/reflection.. but I want to lay down the colors first, I would like to make the bubbmle slitghly brighter too.. I admit I'm struggling a bit on this one ^^.. First time I do something like this

Helm>thx, giving me more confidence to finish it ;) ..  cohesion of the palette seems the most difficult part :D

you might have to sacrifice some saturation to get the colors to work better together.

Ok I decide to give a go at this fad avatar thingie , don't know the name.. I couldn't find any thread that set the "rules" of this, but anyway I thought it would be a good exercise...
Never pixelled any face before, and I'm usually pretty bad at faces

not happy with it yet.. I will make the left side much darker I think.. I still don't really know what I'm aiming for about the style so everything may change  ;D  (especially the BG lol)

Zoso, thx , you are right about the eye, originally , I wanted to have a different half so it was on purpose.. but I don't think it fits anymore.. I corrected it on the x2 version on the left   thx again :)
(it seems you have slightly more hair than me.. :hehe:)

Omenith,  on my screen it's not that blue though  more purple, pink and beige.. the only blue is on the FG..

Sharm, no they are not done yet, but it's good you can already tell they are clouds!  ;D

Then not so happy with the sprites I decided to practice a bit more ^^
so I came here..  :P

Oddly enough, I don't like it as much.  The earlier version looked smoggy, and like it was drizzling that day.  This one, the air is cleared up.  Not quite as interesting.

Sharm, I understand you feeling, The problem probably comes from the fact that I didn't really decide clearly what I wanted to do since the beginning..  I think you are right about the more interesting/original mood with the fog/smog.. I'll see what I'll do  :)

here is a new wip, for the challenge on pixeljoint..

I really like this new one.  My biggest crit is that it is hard to tell where the neck becomes the head...I'd fiddle with it a bit and try to make it more pronounced if I were you.
Also, the shading at the bottom of the neck makes it seem too much like a cylinder...it seems like you should be able to see more of the fret-board from the angle the guitar is at....but it could just be me.
Cool stuff though.  I love what you've done with the hair, and the color mixing on the headband is yummy.  :y:  Can't wait to see more from you.

Thx for the comment Rydin, I guess your critic about the head concerns the guitar? if that case, I agree  ;D

here is a wip of the new challenge.. (on my previous post I was saying pixelation's challenge, I meant pixel joint)
theme is a forest, 16 colors alowed

I'm at 15 colors so far, thinking I 'll make one more for AA from the darkest to the darkest green..

I'd say you only need to AA the bright cristal against that pitch dark background, first thing that popped out at me. But maybe that's what you meant by "from the darkest ---- to the darkest green..", ---- being a mystery color which is probably crystal blue :)

Great entries, both for this and the past one! I love the plants on the foreground, really add depth.

Wow! the shine looks much better without the yellow hue, in the previous pic. I also like how you subtracted the dithering from the biggest crystal. Looks much smoother now. I'm guessing the lower crystals in the center are still a work in progress, as they still seem chunky, and undefinable at some parts. Not as geometrically defined as the upper portions is what I'm basically trying to get at. Also, the detailed crystal being so smooth, now creates a problematic consistency with the rest of the piece; the crystal is so wonderfully done, and smooth, yet the rocks towards the right look very unfinished. I'm just wondering how you'll pull off the smoothness of the water with the light source and ripples...
Again, this is probably still a work in progress, so I'll hold my tongue for now. Looking great though...

with my experiences, i have found that the best way to create smooth water is with a whole ton of AA'ing.

thats my 2 cents anyway =P  looks great.

with a ton of AAing and such a small rez I'm afraid it wont look too much like ripples anymore..

Bob: thx for the comment, about the rocks/crystal.. I don't know, for me the rocks don't look unfinished, just more rough.. and that's what I'm looking for.. a contrast of material.. but maybe I did something wrong..
and yeah the bottom of the crystal and some other parts are not done yet.. but after seeing Jamon & ilkke 's entries, it's hard to get back to work on this

...Not sure if it really does, much less whether it'll help any. Looking awesome nonetheless.

nice edit phil thx,  :) I thought Eck meant more AA than this tho I imagined kind of blurry effect.. as he said 'ton' of AA..  I agree with this amount (don't know if I have to precise that I did'nt start AA the water yet ::) )

Haha, it says select your space hero :P *Warp pedal boost*

Very nice so far, but I think the arrows could be sped up some, and timed better. Also, if you're going to dither the text, dither it more then it's current state.  :D

It's a little awkward to wait for the words to scroll by to read them, since you can only see them clearly when they're on the far left. I would suggest shortening it to "SELECT HERO" or even "HERO SELECT." Another solution entirely would be to raise the arrows to just above the blue region, although this compromises another design element. Anything short of a larger rearrangement seems like a compromise, so maybe this is too nitpicky a detail.

Bon début. :)

terminal arcade, I see what you mean.. I'll think about thx  :)

Presley, yeah you're right about the speed of the arrows.. I'll definitly speed 'em up  ;)

here is a little update.. going so slow...
hope you can distinguish something in this mess  ;D

what do you think of the new arrow?  :hehe: (panning stars inside)

arrow = stars  = negative space = not a functioning piece of interface = problem

the character is cool, but it's not clear that they really match each other yet, that's the only thing id look out for

thx for your crit Adarias,
I noticed the arrow was like a hole too.. but I didn't think it would be a problem cause around it, is still pretty thick and in "positive"... but I will check what it does in animation..

about the character I'll try to make them more alike yeah.. the portrait is far from being done  :)

not to post empty, here is a little update on the sprite..

I redid the sprite, it found it was a tad big.. I probably won't change it anymore for the challenge but may ask for advices to improve it later  :)
I added a kind of teleporter, when you change the character, the present disappears and a new one appears.. I don't think I'll have the animation done for tomorrow tho  :P
I'll have to choose between an idle animation of the guy or the teleport.. ::)

by the way can someone tell me from what game I stole the idea of the teleport like this? I feel I have seen this somewhere before  :hehe:

I hope I didn't overdone the portrait.. it seems to distract a lot from the sprite right now..
I hope I'll be able to balance that with the BG..

I may be still far but I learnt so much about AA on this!

Both the sprite and the portrait look good, but they're too dark for that already very dark blue background. I'd say raise the general lightness of sprite/portrait's colors, or even (OMG!) reduce their contrast.

thx Turbo, Yeah I realised too, but a bit late..  ::)

i tried to fix it a little by lightening the BG..
Overall I'm pretty happy with it.. as I never did anything like this before...even tho there are a few little details I'm not that happy with..
Anyway, this is done.. I won't spend more time on it for a while.. maybe I'll add an other character (much later  ::))

you have wicked depth and focus issues with your placement of the small sprite in front of the large.  Your composition makes me want the sprite to be the focus, but it's so small and busy that it can't be.  id suggest putting it up and back a bit

I don't know, odd as it may seem, I think it works.
Imagine it's a real game for a minute. Character select screen appears, and you immediately see the portrait of Al. His pointing finger leads your eye to the in-game sprite, and the two selection arrows. You now know that by pressing left or right you can change your character. It all seems to work, whilst at the same time it doesn't feel right.

The different spacing of the arrows is really off putting, and I think the dark centre makes them too dominant over the sprite. The halo around the character sprite is really blurry, bevelled and just plain yuck.
