WayForward pixel animation contest

on: October 12, 2005, 06:17:57 pm
Hey guys,

The developer I work for (WayForward Technologies, creators of Shantae & Sigma Star Saga) is always on the lookout for new animation talent. I suggested that a contest is a great way to get the best samples out of people (remember our 144-entry FSc contest a few years back?), and they were in agreement. So we're running a fun little contest.

Rules:

1) Each entrant must pixel animate both a walk cycle and a dance animation off the Shantae model below (in the red box).
The idea behind requiring both is that looping, weight-driven animations (the walk) and more creative animations (the dance) are two pretty different beasts. Any entrant who creates only one of the animations will not be considered.
2) Both animations must not exceed a 64x64 size.
3) Both animations must not add any colors not already in the original Shantae model. You can actually pull from any colors in the below model sheet, but you can't add any new ones.
4) If rules 2 or 3 are violated, and if there's time, the entrant has the option to correct either error and resubmit.
5) All pieces of art must be posted in this thread and be accessible (no dead links) for consideration. You can either post the file as a web-displayed image (animated gif) or just link to the file for download (flc).
6) All pieces must be in either animated gif or flc file format. If there's another format you'd like to suggest, please do so below.
7) No previously-created art may be used aside from the reference art below. You may feel free to take pieces of the poses below if you need to, but the more original your animation is the better it will likely be received.
8 ) Multiple entries are allowed. If you end up animating 3 dances and 2 walk cycles, we'll consider all of them.

So that's it in a nutshell. Work from the idle pose below (inside the red box), do a looping walk or run animation and a dance animation of your own creation (can be looping or single-action). Post below and feel free to comment on everyone else's posts.

Deadline:

The initial deadline will be in 2 1/2 weeks (October 28th). If response from the contest hasn't dwindled by then, it might be extended an additional two weeks.

Prize:

The winner will receive $250 and a copy of Pro Motion Lite (the best pixel animation program available, in my opinion).

FAQ:
(I'll add to this as people post below)

1) Can we enter if we don't want a job? Absolutely. This is just a contest. Create the best entries (as judged by our company's animators) and win $250 + Pro Motion. There is no obligation and conversely, there's no obligation on the part of WayForward to offer anyone work. The $250 prize is guaranteed regardless, though.
2) Can we enter if we're under age? Of course. Again, just a contest. Unless you know of a specific reason why you might not be allowed to enter, the contest is open to everyone.
3) Will you be using my animations in some game? Nope. This is just a contest. This is an opportunity for us to see what's out there in animation talent. We're not actually using these entries for anything.
4) Can I post my animations on my website? Of course. Post away.
5) What's the limit on frame count? There isn't one. You can make a dance that's 4 frames or 40. A recommended length for the walk or run cycle is between 6 and 12 frames. Anything past twelve will probably be too slow, but it's really all up to you.
6) Can mods submit? Of course. The contest is open to everyone except WayForward employees.
7) Do we render them out like the reference art or keep them simple like the GBC animations? Work in the style of the model sheet below. The GBC animations are just to get you inspired with some dance examples.

Do you want us to fully render these or leave them simple like the sample dances?

hmmm...? that timing for the GBC shantae anims cant be right....dont seem half as  entrancing C_c or is it just that there's no music playing? :p

arent we getting any judging parameters? what will you loook for? for example, I'm quite caught up in tweaking framerates to improve the anims, would that be overlookeD?

what about a bit of artistic license with the shading style?..like, can I cast a shadow on something if I think it has expressive value?

This sounds like an excellent competition with an excellent oppurtunity for employment (something I'm looking for!). It's just the worst timing for me though. I start my final high school certificate (HSC) exams next week which run for about month. Good luck to anyone else entering!

Good question. If you tweak frame rates I suppose it's fine. But I know I'll personally be looking at how well the character moves, the way they shift their weight, the pose, etc. Nothing specific, just what looks the best overall.

"is it strictly a walking animation? or can we say.. make her tiptoe, skip or something?"

I'd say skip fine, tiptoe naw. It should be a standard enough cycle to show how well the animator handles weight and movement. I don't think tiptoeing really shows off anything.

Yeah, that's fine. I mean, anything is fine. The only rules we're gonna hold you to are the ones above, so post any 'walk cycle' and your entry will be accepted. But I'd say a very solid traditional walk/run cycle would probably be better received than something kinda weird, especially since the dance animation is already supposed to be pretty creative.

This was going to be my dance (hence the odd split before the flip), but I didn't finish the rest of it.
I'll post the walk cycle and the proper dance animation soon.

Look foreward, while the entrants seem to be small, I'm glad I see a few of the animators that inspired me from old Pixelation.  Best of luck to everyone.

oh, Ahrimanes! glad you joined, we're close to deadline now, but it'd still be great to see your stab at this.

see, I went and seeked this fellow hispanic animator out of a freaking mugen board to see if he'd participate in this.

his stuff is promising, this would be awesome.

I dont think there's a country restriction, I'm Colombian man!

I tried using your avatar myself and I have no idea whatsoever why your av doesnt work, it just doesnt. it's like pixelopolis hates that image or something, I have to go to bed now though, get working on the entry.

Walking, flip (abandoned dance-animation), and the dance.

And those are my entries. I could'nt retstrain myself anylonger. They didn't really take THAT long to make. A pat on the shoulder to the one who can tell what dance inspired me for the rightmost animation.  ;)

I knew some people were holding back until the last minute, but seeing as how this is for a job I didn't consider it appropriate to hold back because basically it means you're afraid of showing someone, having them do a better animation based off of yours, and ultimately forcing you to work harder. Not to create any friction, of course.  :P

PS I finally have time off work, etc. to start working on my walking animation. It'll be alot better then my dancing animation. I kind of screwed up by picking a dance that has to be jerky to get the point across of a sprinkler. It was also admittedly based off an idle Shantae sprite Matt already drew. With my walking animation, however, I'm drawing each frame myself from scratch [based off the original model].

Wow. I like that "Funny run". Very cartoonish. Maybe the arms and head moving some, or just the arms. The face looks a little static though. Love the dance too.

Great entries so far. :) Contest is officially extended to November 14th by the way, if anyone else wants to give it a go.

Just announcing my intent to enter. I'm glad the deadline was pushed back because I didn't know, until two days ago, that the contest existed. For the people who have posted entries, really good work.  :o

Quick question.

If the deadline is on Nov 14th, does that mean we can still post our entry on the 14th or do they all have to be posted by the end of the 13th?

Whew, almost didn't make it! My bloody monitor died completely on Saturday, working right now on a slightly fuzzy one that makes pixeling painful.

Had fun doing them. There are more good animators around than I expected, I want to see more stuff from y'all!

Boogie man...yeah, I know it's not normal,in fact it's really weird , but that was the whole point, to show what I like to do, what I do, not what people'd expect of me.

it's not even half of what I had planned though, I wanted a whole scene of her dancing, I'm still trying to get another anim finished

actually, here's that other anim, I'd rather put it unfinished than never submit it....still working on it tho

Also, for my run anim.....I dont intend it as an standart game run anim.....it would be crazy to have a main character run like that, I meant for it to have all sorts of exagerated motions so to as express personality...=/ it would be far to extenuating to watch that in a real game every single time you pushed >...not to mention keeping up that standard of animation.

Hey guys,

Here's the announcement from Matt Bozon (our creative director and Shantae's creator/animator/director). Thanks to all who entered. The winner can email either myself or Matt about claiming your prze.

- Adam

Quote from: Matt Bozon
Hi everyone!

Thank you all so much for your submissions.  It was really fun watching the entries roll in, and seeing how you  each worked off each other to create something great.  We had some trouble picking a winner… I was surprised that the directors here had strong (and opposing) perspectives on which was the “best” one.  In the end we had them vote with points to determine a winner.  There were favorite dances, and other favorite animations, and some were just more in the spirit of the Shantae character, so they were successful in a variety of ways.  The results:

WINNER: Konjak

Konjak’s animation was very impressive, and really moved well through space.  It showed a solid understanding of character’s form.  On top of that, the dance was really charming, and was on-model enough that it could be inserted directly into a Shantae game.  The walk was very over the top, but was very fun to watch.  The run was also very adorable.

2nd: Camus: I loved your dance the most.  It takes liberties with the character model, in that she changes proportions, but in return it shows amazing movement and is by far the most entertaining dance.  The other directors were frightened by your walk cycle, but I felt that the dancing more than made up for it.  I’d love to see more dances in your off beat style.

3rd: Based on points, there was a third place tie.  Hondo and Ahrimanes both did amazing dance animations and very solid walks.  Ahrimanes’ dance feels the most loyal to the character of all the dances, and his walk cycle is solid and very functional without going overboard (which can be very necessary at times).  Hondo’s, like Konjak’s moved very well through space and had great use of the forms.  It’s also worth mentioning that Hondo’s dance would not require any revisions to be used in a Shantae game.  So, Hondo’s animation got “first pass approval” if this were an actual work assignment (great job)!

We had other favorites mixed in there as well.  Mad Toaster’s dance and Pawige’s dance (nice twisting of the body) were both memorable and well put together, and Alex’s dance was a crack up.  There are a lot of talented people on this website and thank you for again for all the entries.  For everyone that didn’t get a mention, keep up the good work, you’re well on your way!  I would really enjoy working with you on a Shantae game now or in the future 

--Matt

Prize enough for me :`)

lmao I scared the hell out of everyone with the run cycle XD damn...I wanted to make it really powerful but still sexy, like Shantae...but I failed.
I wonder if I'll ever get that animation syle right, it always seems right in my head but I cant seem to translate it visually to make it acceptable at all.....someday I guess

I actually got the idea for playing with her proportions from the select+^ animation, also I had actually visualized one dance animation per element (water, earth, fire, ice) this was water so I was going for the kind of one-way fluidity you see in a flowing river.

I should have put more time into this, I know I could have done something really really awesome... I also wanted to do more with face expressions (like the select+B dance in Shantae GBC, god I love that one).

Matt, I would love to work with you guys, I really really really would, dont worry, you can tell everyone else I'll give up my crazyness, and wont make something like my run until you guys ask me :p
That was just for this contest where I felt I had to show my own unique little way of doing things, I couldnt be more happy that I really did.

Konjak! I totally agree with Matt about the depth, you really really earned this
I specially liked

Ahrimanes! it was really great to have you here, your walk was perfectly smooth and practical, the dance was very adequate too.

OH OH! and Adam, thank you so much for your insight and giving us all this chance in the first place!
