Hey there people, other than my quick post in the lines section, this is my first real post.

here is a small peice of pixel art I have been working on for a few days now, the linework alone took me 2 days LOL!
Im still not happy with all of it, but thus far its working out well. applying my art techniques to pixel'ing is more difficult than I first thought.

the thing I am finding the hardest is skin tones, and dithering. I do pencil art all the time, but colors are not an issue there as they are in this field.

I've only ever "finished" one other peice of pixel art, and so far my experience in pixelling stretches to a few SHMUP sprite sheets and a couple of line drawings.

please, and comments/critiques are welcome. I will update as I make progress.

LOL, I need a life!

I donno..... :-\

But regardless, critiques:
I think it is wasting a truck load of colors.  There is no reason this should have a color count in the 20's.  I also feel this could use a more distinct light source, as the current one seems very inconsistent; the each girl's hair and the arm have highlights in different areas.  And finally:

EDIT: Oh my bad  :-[...the other girl's hand?

LOL,

well, its not really as bad as all the topless fantasy chickies you see in here, at least there wearing clothes LOL

yes, thats the other girls hand!

so, which is it, more skin tones, or less skin tones LOL

I can possibly see how I could use less than 20 colors. also, while on the subject of colors (forgive me, Im new) but what is with people and the whole "thats too many colors man" am I missing something, you have access to 16.7 million colors, taking that into mind, 20 is not a great deal LOL

I am so bad at lighting, this one more than my last pixel-art, simply due to the complex poses.  I think once I add shadows in there, things will look better. The lighting come from the right.

oh, the black hair is sortof a temp thing, I know it looks crap LOL.  I didnt actually (at least mean to) highlight the other girls hair, LOL

thanks for the comments. Rydin, could you give me a little more on what you mean by less colors, what would you suggest I do about the shading then?

--edit--

Eck - missed your question first time around, I am 26 years old. I dont know why, but Im good at sketching women!  :P

Moving from sketches on pen and paper, to small pixels was a steep learning curve, but most of my techniques move straight over, which is handy. Check the Line Art thread to see some more of my lines!

Um if it's the other girls hand why is it in the top girls skin tone?

because originally I colored both girls in the same skin tone, then as I started shading the bottom girl I changed the skin tone!

see, easy explenation LOL  ;)

-Well to start with, I ask you, what's the point in using colors you can't see?

I tried to simplify the palette you had.  The colors are still pretty uninteresting though.

-(just to add my own opinion: Good pixel art is concise in the same sense that good writing is.  Getting the most said with the least amount of words/getting the most information with the least amount of pixels, etc.)

-Pick a spot where the light is coming from, and highlight/shade accordingly.  Putting highlights and shades at varied angles confuses the viewer's eyes, and makes it not believable.

how about this for a pallett?

from top to bottom :

Row 1 - Skin A
Row 2 - Skin B
Row 3 - Hair / Pink Clothing
Row 4 - Black (for hair and Clothing)
Row 5 - Clothing

total colours = 26 including the white background

any less and the differences in the colors would be too extreme in my opinion.

what is your opinion? LOL :D

Why do you need two different ramps for each skintone? They both have the same basic color. I could see if one was blue and the other red, but for this, all you need to do is have one skintone ramp and use the lightest color in one grrl but not the other.
Same with the black colors in rows 3 and 4.
Also, you could get rid of every other color in all the ramps (especially the lightest ones, which are essentially the same). Use neutral colors closer to grey for ones that will be used among many other colors.

your all ruthless!!! RUTHLESS LOL  :P

ok, after much panting, sweating, frustration, and uselessly shaking my fist at the computer, here is another color pallet that I think will still work for the image, and satisfy you lot LOL

14 colors, +1 for the white, and +1 for transperant would make it total 16 in all!

both skin tones AND the brown hair are taken from the top gradient.
everything else from the bottom one.

so, does this one pass?
