Well, don't go and detail before you have everything down. That'd be a dire mistake. Either make a stick figure of the underlying pose or a silhouette, or both, then get down basic shapes and basic shading. Before you move on to details, everything should be in correct proportions and pose. It sucks to have something near complete then have it pointed out to you that something is (and has been) amiss since waaay back before all the detail. Then, once you have all the basic forms and stuff ready to go, add the details.
