[WIP] Tiny Beat Em Up Sprite

on: February 01, 2007, 05:09:06 pm
Just some animation practice. Yes, he is very small. I'll save you all some typing and say it myself.

As always, my colors suck. I know I need contrast with the skin tone, but I just dont know how to do it. Also, is it best to start practicing animation on tiny things like this? Id love to hear feedback and get some help. Oh, and sorry for the missing apostrophes, but the key isnt working (again.)

Love the colors, but he lost his lankeyness. I also just realized I forgot to give him eyes!

EDIT:

Ok, I made this edit this morning but didn't think it was post worthy. I'm kind of stuck so I'll go ahead and show it. I caved and "de-lanked" him a bit and also desaturated his colors. The browns needs help and I'm thinking perhaps the skin's lightest tone does, too.

Souly, that's kind of similar to the original hair I had given him only mine was really ridiculous. Think Jimmy Neutron.

Sorry to double post, but I just finished a walk animation. I got very lazy on the legs. If you look closely, you'll see the first and second half are identical except I changed which leg is in front. Although it was just going to be a place holder, I think it might actually work. I got VERY lazy on the top half and just made the arms move side to side and the top bob. I need to fix it,but I'm not sure how...

EDIT AGAIN:

Made his punches a bit better. He's shooting from the shoulder now, so to speak. Looks a lot more powerful. Also took the highlight off his back leg. Not sure if its better that way or not. There's a few other minor changes in there.

Actually, I rather like the walk animation... but the positioning of the arms isn't very realistic :-\.

They shouldn't be pointing out in front so much, and should swing around more. Apart from that, nice ;).

Cute lil'l sprite, and I like the walk animation.

Umm... but I have some c&c about the boxing animation. I tried his moves out and they just don't work.

First of all... the stance. The legs are nice and wide apart, good balance. Only one thing, when you hit there is absolutely no point in turning the foot out like that, no point in moving it anywhere at all (no you don't even lift any part of the feet from the ground). If you did you would probably loose all your balance and fall, or the punch would get weak. Because the force in the blow comes from your hip. If you move your feet, it is because you want to move forwards or backwards towards your opponent, or sideways around them. As your sprite isn't moving when turning the foot I'd say it's a pretty much useless move.

Okay, then I'll move on to the arms. Base positions for arms when boxing are elbows down, close to the body (like, almost in front of your chest), and fists close to the chin. That is because you always have to be prepared to block a blow towards your face. That's the most important part to defend on your body. You also try to keep your shoulder up and chin down (so you won't get hit on/under the jaw, that's dangerous). When you box with one arm, the other stays close to the body, prepared to block any blow to the face from that side.

In your sprite he lowers the arm (away from us) after the blow and then hits with the other. WRONG. That fist and arm would go back into base position close to the face and head.

Hope that helped.

Hmmm, I see what you mean about the feet. I was trying to exaggerate the force going into the initial swing. As for the punches, I think what you're saying about the hand not getting up after the punch was somewhat addressed in the third sprite of my last post. I was actually hoping for help on the walking animation's arms. I did a little work on a more natural, swinging motion:

I'm thinking I had the right idea making him walk with his arms up, ready to fight, but I need a better pose. If I go that way, I think his arms should "bounce" one frame behind him if that makes any sense. He actually looks better if you zoom in super close...

Yeah, the arm isn't going down... but he's still holding his arms way low and out at the sides when walking in the last animation... if he's going to be fight ready quick he needs to have them close to the chest. In my opinion anyways. Maybe you should have two walk animations? One idle, and one fit-for-fight. I like new one with the arms completely down, except they're too short. They just go to his waist. It also looks like he's patting his stommach (I can't explain why).

I like this, the animations are smooth and neat. What I think this lacks right now is a bit of personality. Since you seem to be working in 32x32, and you've got something of a cartoony look going, you could give him a bigger head to make him more expressive and whatnot.

Quick and dirty edit:

Trucker Jim - Ready to kick some punk ass!

Only one thing, when you hit there is absolutely no point in turning the foot out like that, no point in moving it anywhere at all (no you don't even lift any part of the feet from the ground).

Actually you do. Throwing a proper straight right with added hip movement usually makes the back foot move into a similar position.

Hmmm, good point, Junkboy, but I think I'll just make a new dude rather than overhaul this one. I need to be working higher res anyways. This guy is just addictive, though!

Ok enough. I should move on to bigger and better things (bigger especially.)
