8-Bit Street Sharks

on: February 16, 2019, 01:00:36 am
It's been a while.

Trying to draw these Street Sharks on paper has been murder, so I only successfully drew two of them. I tried my best two draw the hammerhead and the big red one, but I couldn't. I technically can draw the red one, but I'm not happy with the result.

Anyway, the first Shark I drew was the light blue one with the rollerblades. I was inspired by the game 'Paperboy'.

I was using this image of rollerblading as a reference.

Clearly, a few things changed from transferring the sketch into pixel art. The hands are purposefully circles because I pretty much knew what they were going to look like in the finished product. I wasn't sure what was going to happen to the fin, which is why it was just placed in the middle. I basically had to sculpt out the head. There were better representations of the head in earlier drawings, but I just got sick of trying to draw the right representation.

[My piece]

When drawing the legs in particular, close up, the two looked completely fused, but looking at it from a distance (500%) I felt that it wasn't noticeable.

ribbing aside, you're still using a lot of internal black lines. Try to limit those to the outline since it muddies details and makes it hard to parse what's going on. Your pose is also very unclear.
PSA: use imgur

I have to submit a work-in-progress piece cuz it's late at night right now.

I'm particularly worried that:
- not everything is at an isometric angle
- can't figure out if the legs already look isometric, or if I'm just drawing them both incorrectly. I certainly can't figure out a way to not make them split apart, so as to emulate the skating pose in an isometric angle.

I drew a quick fin on the back of the head to demonstrate angle I'm going for. Once again, I'm still trying to emulate the 'Paperboy' sprite, except by using roller blades.

This is my final attempt at the light blue shark.

Overall:
- not 100% happy with it
- IMO, I think this was too difficult of a task for me
- I think it's much more readable than my first attempt
- I believe everything is at an isometric angle
- I really wasn't sure if I could've added in the angle of the eyes and the nose. Eventually, I settled on what you see for the beginning of the head
- I can provide the reference images for what I was using to get the pose down

So I actually think your first attempt was the best, and is a solid improvement over your previous sprites, it looks clean and I could honestly see it working in an old NES game. You did especially well given the difficulty of something like this, even I had a hard time sorting this one out! Your second attempt fixed some issues, like giving him a bulkier upper body, but also created new ones: an oddly separated fin, and less clear limb position- I tried to get the best of both worlds.

notes:
- Enlarged the sprite to fit in 32x32, a common size. This allowed me to maximize his upper body to get proportions similar to the original character
- Let the fin blend into the back in a logical manner
- attempted patterning and shadow, alongside an indication of his brow

hope this helps, and keep pixeling  :D

Thanks Ryu, and good to see you.

As I thought, I knew if I'd gotten it correctly, I wouldn't end up liking the result because of how the character's proportions are so crazy, cuz even looking at your sprite, I'm thinking, "That's supposed to be a head?", "Wait, That's supposed to be a FIN?!"

Oh, and I consciously left out the patterns on the character's beck because when I added them, looking at the sprite as a completed piece, I was sure that the response from people was going to be a unanimous, "That kind of detail is too small to be noticeable for this kind of sprite size."

This sprite is of the dark blue shark character.
It's inspired by the game 'Mach Rider'. My sprite is riding a motorcycle, whereas Mach Rider is using a motorbike.

My sprite:

I treated the motorcycle as a separate sprite, so, like an overlay, so the bike has it's own colors (3): red, dark red and black

Mach Rider:

I was using these pics as references:

Motorcycle Rider Back View:

I know Ryumaru told me to only use one or two references, but it was either stick to two, or not progress at all.
I primarily used the first image of the shark to draw the motorcycle, the second shark image/GIF to understand what the character will look like from a back view, and the third image as a general guide of what someone looks like on a motorcycle.
