Pixelator: RESULTS (round 1)

on: January 22, 2007, 04:34:50 am
Hello hello everyone
The time has come you have all been waiting for.
The announcement of the duels and the first challenge.
Here is the duel chart:

Bottom half is only the list of challengers and their battle icons, not the duel matchups. For rankings and duels, refer to the top part of the chart
(for those who do not have a custom battle icon, feel free to post one for me to change.)
---

First Place: $25
Second Place: $15

Courtesy of Ensellitis and Feron (paypal)

Challenge 1: MONSTERS

Description:
Create an image of a monster or creature.
Size:
No bigger than 100x100
Colours:
No more than 32
Restrictions / Rules:
- Dont create a monster that already exists. You are allowed the general idea, such as werewolf, dragon, etc but dont make one that already exists in a movie, game, comic, etc. (Remember, creativity counts)
Quote from: EXAMPLE
Here's an example: you can draw a pheonix, and that would be fine, because a pheonix is not a trademark monster of any specific company or anything like that. the monster is based on mythology and has many takes. you CAN'T, however, draw something like a chocobo, that would be ripping off Final Fantasy.
-No posting in any of the forums for help. This will mean an automatic disqualification
Time:
2weeks
Submitting:
Do not post your image in this thread. PM me the link to your image
Judging:
Colour choice - if your colours are interesting, if you make good use of your colours
Quality - any stray pixels, clean lines, if it looks finished opposed to a rough sketch
originality - how creative it is, how much it breaks away from the standard monsters most are used to
technique - if there are different techniques used effectively, how well the techs are used in blending and texturing, more than just flat or pillow shading
overall composition - how well the image looks as a whole.

This challenge is left fairly open to interpretation and creativity so that you are able to use whatever techniques you are most comfortable with. This challenge is set simple for you to create an entry without much restrictions or rules to give you the best chance to move on. Each challenge will progressively get harder.

please do not update the chart anymore. The only images i will allow to be posted here, are updated battle icons. This way it keeps things simpler and cleaner, by just referring to this first post.

Challenge has ended

Damn, damn, damn...

Hah hah! Actually I'm quite nervous...But I must call upon my boiling, barbaric Aztec/dirty, Texican blood to thrash you about, and feast on your lifeless body like the carne' on my burrito!! Only then, will I earn the status of the honored Jaguar Warrior!!!

Seriously, though, this is going to be frickin' hard...

Good luck to you, and everybody else. Now shake hands and fight fair.

Hey, question:
If we submit our entry early will we be able to send in an update or even a completely different piece to replace the originally submitted? Or will the first submission have to be the completely final version.

Good luck to you, too, B.O.B.

May the best pixelist win.

A suggestion: since some people seem to be looking at the bottom section for their pairings (see Blick and 9_6's posts), you might want to switch the names around so the bottom section matches the pairings.  Good luck, everyone!
Always remember: a preposition is not something you should end a sentence with.

The problem to that suggestion is that the names would have to be moved around every round. That's a bit too much work and throws the purpose of the stuff above out the window.
The names at the bottom are there just so people know who the icons above are.

Both Blick and 9_6 ought to know that the bottom list are not pairings, as it's been said by flaber in the other thread.

Hey, question:

For this challenge im going to say no. You have 2 weeks to work on your entry. If you arnt quite happy enough with it, dont submit it as early. In a duel you only get one chance to beat your opponent, you cant have multiple attempts, or retry a move. So similar to that, what you submit is what will be placed against the opposing person. You have one chance / opportunity to beat them, so you should make sure you are pleased with it when you submit. 2weeks should be long enough to ensure this.

The bottom portion of the screen is only for who the challengers are. It is the reference to see what battle icon matches up to whom. That would be why I have it labeled "challengers" instead of "duel matchups". The top portion of the screen is where the rankings and duels take place.

Ah, I thought it was strange that the bottom listings didn't seem to synch with the pairings above in a way that I'd guess it would go.

Damn. That changes all of my speculation.

Indeed the whole chart is a bit confusing.
(I wish it were more spaced overall, with rectangles on each "stage" for putting the mini avatars, so at the end it wouldn't look too crammed.)
But anyway, I believe you shouldn't be thinking about who your partner is, but focusing on being creative and doing your best.
The whole pairing thing should be flaber's job, so just pixel.

Some exciting matchups in the first round.. especially looking forward to Mirre v. Ryona and Xion v. BOB. Shame that there'll be some real heavyweights going down so early, though.

Might I propose that the judges fashion a few trophies for the top finishers? Shame to see a competition like this without any pixels from them.

True, two image slots are missing. They should be somewhere right under/above the 'FINAL' caption, or somewhere along the trail left and right to the winner slot.

And Freon. :)

Already sent my monster. A bit early but I was happy enough with it and I couldn't ask anyone for help with it anyways. I was kind of hoping that the size limit wouldn't be so low. 2 weeks to make a 100x100 picture with no animation is a bit much.

Well I've already created mine, but with the help of 2 weeks, I'm either going to define it more, or create  crap-load of other 100x100 monsters, and choose the best one on game day. However, I gather this strategy will probably screw me over, and Xion will have the last laugh.

- woot

on the main image thingey - "final" should be labelled "semi final".  "semi final" should be labelled "quarter final".  a space for the Final also needs to be added as currently there are 4 members competing in teh final - when it should only be two.

PS - FERON IS MY NAME, but alas for the compo i dont mind being called freon .  in the unlikely event that i should somehow magically win - i would like it to read feron  :P.

Haha, I'm holding you to that.  :P

But really, I've decided on one.
If it comes out half as good as I hope it does, then it'll be twice as good as I've ever done, and three halves as good as I'm capable of. :o

The only two girls are going up against eachother in the first round? That sucks. >_<
I didnt even look at the names when I randomized the duels.
the order in which people signed became their number for my randomizing. I then used a random number generator between 1-32 to get numbers.
Sorry about that, guess thats just how it worked out.

whats the deal with animations for this round?
no animations. This is a static challenge. I dont want to see your abilities in animation, I want to see creativity, and choosing an interesting pose.

This is 100x100 so that:
1) everyone is able to pixel something of good quality. Some people can quickly pixel alot larger, which becomes an advantage over those who are slower and more comfortable with smaller.
2)Its not too overwhelming for the first challenge

I edited the chart slightly.
if it is still confusing, I can revamp it again.
(edit: oops, forgot to change semi final and final and such. Ill fix that next edit)

I agree with others that this will be fun to watch.  Good luck to everyone!

Yeah these rules are weird, and sometimes contradicting.

Quote
- Dont create a monster that already exists. You are allowed the general idea, such as werewolf, dragon, etc but dont make one that already exists in a movie, game, comic, etc. (Remember, creativity counts)
This one especially makes no sense.

I also think 100x100 is very limiting to the ambitious, and hope it gets upped in future rounds.

Regardless, it's fun to guess who'll win from each matchup before hand.

Here's an example: you can draw a pheonix, and that would be fine, because a pheonix is not a trademark monster of any specific company or anything like that. the monster is based on mythology and has many takes. you CAN'T, however, draw something like a chocobo, that would be ripping off Final Fantasy.

Makes sense?

Backgrounds are allowed. The main focus though should be the monster.
As I explained to Xion earlier:
Quote from: Xion Night
Hey, question:
If we submit our entry early will we be able to send in an update or even a completely different piece to replace the originally submitted? Or will the first submission have to be the completely final version.
Quote from: flaber
For this challenge im going to say no. You have 2 weeks to work on your entry. If you arnt quite happy enough with it, dont submit it as early. In a duel you only get one chance to beat your opponent, you cant have multiple attempts, or retry a move. So similar to that, what you submit is what will be placed against the opposing person. You have one chance / opportunity to beat them, so you should make sure you are pleased with it when you submit. 2weeks should be long enough to ensure this.

Quote from: ZoSo
Yea.. well another question. Does it have to be a sprite .. or can i be a picture? If you know how i mean.
It can be a picture, sprite, image, portrait, full body. The theme is monster. How you take that is upto you (with respects to the restrictions).

Quote from: Joshua
I'm sorry, I'm a bit confused about the rules. Can I still be a Challenger? Also, is feb 5th the deadline for which you have to have the sprite completed?
Sorry, this activity is already full. I had a signup alittle while ago for those who wanted to participate. There will be more of these, so perhaps you can make it into the next challenge.

Quote from: Stwelin

Thanks Stwelin. Thats what I was hopeing to get across. You can create an orc, but dont model them after the ones in Lord of the Rings. Or you can create a demon pig, but dont model it after ganon from Zelda.

Quote from: Scotteh
IMPORTANT!

I really wanted to compete in this competition, but I am really caught in school work so if they let you, joshua can take my place
Seeing now, how this has come up, I would really hate to have an empty position on the first round. Robotriot expressed an interest first, so I will give it to him if he is still interested. If you do not respond within 1day, then joshua may take the position. If anyone is unable to continue, please let me know so that others may fill your position

Quote from: Opacus
Is it okay btw, to post it AFTER you've sent it?
Wait until the round has finished. I will post all the images and duels at the end. As soon as its posted here, then your free to post it wherever and show it to whomever.

--
About the size - 100x100, and the time - 2weeks, please stop complaining. For the first round I wanted to ensure that everyone would be able to have an equal chance and be able to have a submission. If there was no size limit some people are able to create huge finished images, while others have more difficulty creating something big. Big has a huge advantage over small, and some people just arnt capable enough or quick enough to pull together a good 500x500. By capping it at 100x100 this meant that there would be no advantages. Just because you cant pixel largescale does not mean that the pixeler is bad. Then the 2weeks is to ensure that everyone - all 32 people, are able to find the time to make an entry. I know for alot of the students around where I live exams are happening, Or people at work may have a big project. Within a 2 week period everyone should be able to find the time. So just because your done early doesnt mean you should complain about the time. Perhaps more time could have been spent on it? different ideas and designs thought up, instead of the first thing that came to mind. Utilize the time.
But mostly, the small size and the 2weeks is so that there is an entry for every challenge. I would hate to see someone drop out first thing and give an automatic win to someone.

As the challenges progress they will get harder and more specific. Sometimes working under stricter conditions is easier, sometimes its harder because you must follow exactly what is asked without any interpretation of flare. But as a challenger, you should be able to cope with different expectations, whether precise or open.

Since you already got Robotriot's hopes up, I say we give them both 24 hours to fight to the death to secure the spot, by having them pixel something awesome like with a 50x50 restriction...that or rock, paper scissors, through PM of course!(they both send in their decisions to flaber, and only flaber sees the results, thus declaring whether or not rock crushes scissors, paper covers rock, or scissors cuts paper...) Thats if they both want it bad enough.

Haha. Funny.

I dunno whether I should use more colors and add some details, or if I should conserve my colors and have a simpler style. Bah, I'm working pretty slowly. :/ Good thing the deadline was kept at 2 weeks.

Direct opposite here. I already have 3 works created, and I can't decide on which one I want to send in. Woe is me! I really think this stupid strategy of mine is definitely going to screw me over. I've already tried refining some of them, or just tried focusing on one. But after a couple hours, it just gets to the point of, "eh, screw it. It's fine as is." Hopefully, I choose the right one to win it. Else, I'll hire a ninja assassin to take out Xion.

I dunno, man, I've only got one WIP, but I'm pooling all of my artistic knowledge into it until by the time it's done it'll be a concentrated beam of Awesome, which, when you look at it, will explode out from your monitor and laser you in the eyes, causing immense amounts of pain and blindness, not to mention the humiliation, which will last a lifetime.

I can't believe it's just round one.

This is going to take so long. I'm feeling quit confident however. It's fun predicting who will beat each other and who you think will be in the finals.

I'm thinking it's going to be between Xion Night and Rerg1.

I don't think you are allowed to post on any other forums for help. If caught, then you are officially disqualified. This should specifically be a one man deal. However, if you can find a person on aims, or some other chat program, who is willing to keep his critiques hush, hush, and not spill the beans to any of the officials or competitors, well by all means. Fair is fair, until you are caught with your pants down, if you know what I mean. ;)
   By the way:

Challenge begins now
Ends Feb 5th, at 7am (GMT)

If it ends on the 5th, when will we have the results of the winners, of the first round? Is there a set day for the winner results that we can expect, or will this be purely decided on by the free time the judges have?

I just noticed that I'll be gone for a week by february the 9th. ;P
That would mean I would have half the time for the battle against snake... if I somehow make it through the first round...

in the end it will all come down to time.

if (for example) snake only has a couple of hours a week, and (for example) rerg has 20 hours a week - anything is possible.

There are many awesome pixellers here - but dont let it give u a negative attitude.

Besides - its not about who wins - its about the taking part and pushing the pixels to the best of your ability.

--
About when judging will take place, and when next round will begin.
What I had planned on was once all submissions were in, and the deadline came about - I was then going to send them out to the other judges for evaluating on who won. This could take as quickly as a few hours, or a few days. depending on time and free-ness of the judges. That was why I had originally thought about starting each challenge on a sunday, that way you all can have abit of a break inbetween each challenge as well. However, if you would prefer, I can start the challenge as soon as results are in.
It does not personally matter to me. Just if it starts and ends on roughly the same day of week people can accustom themselves to that. Let me know if as quick as possible or if waiting till sunday/monday (depending on where in world) is fine.

People sure like making random assumptions. Fine, fine...

I wouldn't reccomend joke threats though. I don't like joke threats. They make me want to hurt things.

The crocodile hunter died. Remember that.

In regards to a duel against helm, people aren't quite ready for that yet it seemes.

When I was talking about how to kill a Snake, I was refering to my own first round battle against Snake, but as Snake catcher I don't think I'm anywhere near experienced enough to kill the cobra I'm up against, his venom will surely get to me.
Also, a fight between Helm and Snake would be interesting, not because they are both very skilled, but because they have such different styles.
That's all I have to say, I'm more hyped up about my battle against Snake, then helm vs. Snake.

I'm up any time serpent-boy. Just thought it wasn't a nice idea to both judge and participate at the same time, though the option was available from flabber.

If I win, the condition is you give yourself an avatar.

ill see if i can think up a new better system for judging next time.
That will make it easier and more acceptable for judges to participate aswell.
But that will be next time.

About 1week left.

I'm exited about this and I'm not even competing.
I think the winner will be the one who can pixel something good really fast and who has a lot of free time.

But still, as I understand it there are four judges. Add one more judge and a tie would be impossible.

Q: What happens in the event of a tie?

There will be no ties.
The judging system is not based off of a yes or no / pass or fail type style.
Do not worry - we have that under control.

Athens? Helm? Puhshaw! They could always duel in Texas with leather chaps. I could be special guest referee, with my patented Lucha Libre mask....Helm would have to watch from home, through pay per view in his little t.v. set.

From what I've read about it, there would be a lot of oiling up going on, so any grappling would probably look unprofessional anyway.

What about ancient Greek boxing? In some cases they would use rocks in their gloves to speed up the maches. Extra activities could include making pixel pieces with the leftover teeth.

I was about to ask the same thing. For great detail, I have to practically dedicate the whole piece to the monsters themselves, rather than implement a background. So far I have 5 pieces now, and only one is using a background....ugh, I really need to choose which one to send in.

But maby they will judge how well the monster blends with the background...

i think that a background can make or break a piece.  a great one makes it that much better, a poor background can make the object in the foreground look bad.

so a background can help, or it can hurt.  from what i have seen of helm, flaber, and the other judge's comments, they will be judging the complete piece, including background...

but if i am wrong, feel free to smack me around for a few.

O' $#!*.
Does it have to just be a monster alone? Like, just a monster? Nothing but a monster? I mean, I know it can be a scene or a sprite or what have you, but the monster has to be just a monster or a monster with a monster and not with a non-monster? I mean, yeah?

Backgrounds are allowed. The main focus though should be the monster.

maybe that answers your question? i'm sure you could have a monster and a non-monster in the foreground. i would assume that anything with the monster in the spotlight would be fine. i mean if you drew a monster eating some guy and then they said you could only have a monster in the foreground, well that'd be just silly.
thanks Dogmeat!

Xion: I'm sure you're allowed to have a background. If it doesn't allow a background, they would've mentioned it. Also, my idea wouldn't work without one, so I'm just saying they allow one in hopes to give confirmation to myself about my own adhesion to the rules.

Backgrounds are allowed.

the main focus though should be of your monster.
Only one 'monster' should be in the picture. If you have flies, or eggs or birds in the background, consider those accessories. But do not have 2 monsters fighting, or side by side hugging. there should be only 1 monster, clearly scene. any other 'life' whether plants, or flies, etc, should only be thought of as accessories that add/compliment to the image, rather than make the image.

The time factor is almost making you doubt yourself. Wouldnt it have been easier to have just enough time to make one entry and submit only that one, knowing full that you couldnt have done anything different or better.

Back to the $#&%ing drawing board.

$#!*!!!!

EDIT: I OBJECT! It didn't say specifically anything about only having one monster per image in the rules! I mean, it said "Make an image of a monster or creature," but since the theme was titled "MONSTERS" (notice the plural) I only naturally assumed that multiple monsters could be the focus of an image. Not only that, but you said that how we interperet the theme was up to us, and I interpereted it as I saw fit.

Meh, I'm no judge, but I don't see how multiple monsters could hurt. I mean, it's 100x100 pixels, so the more monsters, the harder it is to fit(for a good piece, that is...:) ). Naturally, it will probably work against you, but if you make it work out, then kudos to you, good sir. So if this decision is left to the competitors, then my vote goes to draw however many monsters you want, just as long as it fits within 100x100.

hmmmm.
well...
originally i had only thought of only 1 monster.
But, after reading over my posts, I do not seem to state only 1 monster specifically.
The description does say "make an image of a monster or creature" with "A" being singular, and neither monster or creature being plural.
However, the title does say monsters. So in a round-about way, kinda pushing it, i suppose those 2 contradict each other.
...
Since i did not state flat out only 1 monster is allowed... I guess you fall just into the safety zone.
I did say this challenge was all how you interpret the challenge, and as you interpret it this way.. you would still be right.
I am not playing favorites, or making an acception. You just simply had a different interpretation than i was expecting, which still seems to be ok.

As I said, this challenge is left open to interpretation and seeing as how i did not place a restriction on monster count, it is acceptable for you to interpret this way.
Again, no rule changes or acceptions, you just managed to squeeze by with that.

F&#@!!!

Starting over for the 3rd time now. First one was focusing on the background too much; second one was a remake of the first, but was poorly executed; third one was bland and uninspired. I'm trying really really hard to go for 10,000 pixels and 32 colors of pure epic, but my execution still isn't up to my intention.

So, I know we can't post in forums, but what about presenting it to an individual for help? Like if I were to want to show it to someone on MSN and ask "Do the colors seem too desaturated?" Would that be in bounds of the rules?

Maybe I'll just walk around and come back to my entry later to see how I could fix it :-\

I think B.O.B. summed that up nicely:
I don't think you are allowed to post on any other forums for help. If caught, then you are officially disqualified. This should specifically be a one man deal. However, if you can find a person on aims, or some other chat program, who is willing to keep his critiques hush, hush, and not spill the beans to any of the officials or competitors, well by all means. Fair is fair, until you are caught with your pants down, if you know what I mean. ;)
thanks Dogmeat!

My confidence in my piece is quite low. The colors are pretty generic, there's only one ramp (did the whole thing in greyscale first), but I'm completely sick of working on it and 'm gonna send it in... soon... :durr:

Some great pixel artists need to die so I can summon them to help me. Or something.

Pshh! My panties don't bunch. I wear thongs. Leopard print...represent, son, represent.

And I think I 've chosen my fav' of the bunch I have already. I'll send it in, either Friday, or Saturday, given the time.

Now how am i supposed to track your msn conversations. ;)
Just as long as its not to someone who is competing or judging
by posting at a forum, its easy to catch the cheating.
I dont want to be able to see any cheating or help given.

...i hope that no-answer, answered your question

Yeah, it answered it well enough. I'm just a strict believer in the honor system, so I wasn't sure if you would care or not about seeking out individuals that aren't taking any part in the competition for a little help. Don't ask, don't tell, that works for me.

i take a lot of offense to that,  everyone knows i dont have a heart.  :hehe: however, if you arent the winner, we have unanimously decided your body will be donated to science (homeless shelter for necrophiliacs as a pinata)

np all, just adding a little competitive edge to the compo.   :D

Thanks for the money prizes but please don't add any more. Right now the amount is symbolic and ok, but it it were to grow then the compo would stop being about love of pixels and it would start being about the dough.

true say, however a little in$Łntive might make competitors more put in that little bit more effort, thus enhancing the resultant pixels, which is what this challenge is about :D

I think the winner of the Tournament should gain a Title. Like the World Pixel Champion or something.

And then the winner of the next tournament has to face the winner of the last tournament for the title.
And I am finally seeing that you were the one worth eating.

So I can't loose by not having anything now.

What happens if both competitors don't submit anything?

the best unsuccessful entry from another battle would go through.

eg.  person A beats person B,  persons C and D both fail to submit.  Person B goes through instead of C and D.

Also - 21 people still have to submit.  I sure hope no-one fails to submit, 2 weeks has been plenty of time.

So does this have to be in on the fourth? Or do I have all of the fifth to turn it in?

you have until the 5th, 7am.
However, you have until the 5th, 7am of GMT / What the forum is using for its time.
So you will have to re-adjust yourself to fit that time.
If i was to submit an entry, the latest i could would be midnight on the 4th, because i am -7hrs from GMT.

If any entry comes in past 7am GMT in my PMs i will not accept it.

You need to pay your Ł5, first. And then decide if you want to pay tax on your bet or your winnings.

I think snake has just as good a chance to fall out as any of us. I think the quality of this compo is going to be shocking! I probably produced my best work ever... (I am not as good as most of these guys) But I think it inspired me to do really good pixel art knowing I am up against Takma.

Now I am really curious when will we see all the entries? After the cut off when the judges are deciding etc?

I was hoping for my entry to be more entertaining than it is, but I had planned on finishing it this weekend and I just don't feel like doing so, probably because my dog ran away last night.

Hopefully it's got enough to keep in the tournament.

Hope you find your dog blick

Whelp, I just sent my entry in. Flaber, if you had trouble receiving it, or it didn't come through, tell me, and I'll try sending it in again. Sometimes they show up as other files, due to past files with similar names.

So have you started judging/marking the ones already in?; assuming your using a points system based on categories (eg: creativity, pallette, composition and pixel-technicality), which also asks the question how long 'til we find out the results?

Mm, yeah, it was kind of annoying to me, too. I mean, people trash-talking someone they aren't even up against? What's up with that? Either that or giving up early. How 'bout just fokuss on the challenge at hand/the current opponent? :-\

Well, anyway, yeah, this is pretty tense. I so want to see what B.O.B made. And the two chicks. :)

Come on guys, cut it out already. Not all people crave attention as much as others. PLEASE, lets not turn something as golden as this, to some dumb, petty argument over who can't take a joke or not. Lets have fun with this man. Who gives a f*** who's better than who, just pixel to the best of your ability. This should be about having fun, not cut-throat, machismo bull-shit.

Oh, and when are we going to see an update on the tourney list, as to who has and hasn't submitted their piece yet?

After the monsters have been posted here, feel free to post them wherever and talk to whomever.
however, crits and comments wont be given out here. Im only showing the duels and the outcomes.

Only a few hours left, and quite a few empty spaces.
However, I did get an entry from some annoymous new member with no posts. Who knows, might have a new up and coming challenger for the next one ;)
of course though, he isnt going to participate, but i will still post his image just for the FUN of it.
no one else though whos not apart of the competition better send me anything.

How do people feel towards a week off.
I was planning to start the next challenge next week at about the same time this one ends. Or would you prefer having it as soon as possible? Thought it might be nice to have it on a same time slot of the week so its easy to know when it starts and ends.

you were all complaining 2 weeks was too long for such a small project like this.

and now, its not enough time.
this is not my fault. I stated in the very first post 7am GMT. it was your task to look up how it converts to your timezone.
So do not whine or complain that you cant have that extra day to work on it.
you had 2 weeks.

It looks like only 23 of the 32 made it  ???

Well, I have to agree with flaber, we had two weeks, maybe the rest will take it more seriously now?

I am genuinely ashamed of mine. Made it in about 2 hours and tooled it all to hell.

That's the direction I'm headed in, too. And I really doubt it's going to change in the next 45 minutes or so.

Hooray for mediocrity!

Honestly, not to be a prude or anything, but this type of truancy pisses me off. Two friggin' weeks to finish something. Not even a big project. Just 100x100 pixels. Thats it. I don't even think the excuse, " Well excuse me for having a life!" or "I had to work..blah" would pass...for TWO WEEKS! I kind of feel bad for the other competitors who sent something in without a challenger, to fight back. It's like fighting with the frickin' wind.
Oh well, there is obviously going to have to be some balancing due to the non-participation of others. It bothers me even more that some who didn't send something in are some outstanding artists. Gah, I don't even know why I'm so bothered by this. I'm going to bed.

I mean.. don't let it get to you. Some people are lazy. Some people might have had complications at the last minute. In the end, everyone got pushed to make some really cool stuff. Even though this is technically a competition, I doubt anyone actually wants the title or the bragging rights. It's just an event created to encourage a ton of people to make a ton of nice pixel art.

Twenty-seven people actually came through. That's twenty-seven great pieces that didn't exist before this competition, from twenty-seven different artists. That's just cool.

Xion and BOB was definitely the pairing that everyone seemed to be looking forward to, and now it seems it was for good reason. Love the fabric, Xion, but is the detail enough to beat BOB's lively character? I'm dying to know.

I like GOODNIGHTdestroyer's entry as well, so vibrant and a neat bunch of textures squeezed in it. Probably my favorite of all the entries.

I really seemed to have underestimated some of you, there are some entries here that blow my shit away.

Haha, I had noticed that a lot of people used a bunch of purple hues and then I saw your hidden text there, Rydin, and thought it was a funny coincidence that you not only didn't use purple, but then made a note of it.

you could always take the first round as the dedication round as well...  every comp will have people not make the deadline, and since this one has different stages, the first one kinda weeds out those who aren't going to participate

Nice turnout. Really like yours Mirre. Simple yet appealing design. Where did Ryona run off to... was looking forward to the result.

A lot of unique styles on show here. A bit surprised how many of them turned out sprite-like. Wasn't expecting that. There are some pretty close ties so it'll be interesting to see what happens once the votes are in. Too bad some people came up short, but it was bound to happen to somebody I guess.

DUEL 7
The B.O.B. VS Xion Night

Haha! What the hell is up with my portrait?! It looks as if I'm the phantom of the opera. Uhm, when you ever you get back, could you fix that Flaber? The original and normal portrait is actually still in the tourney template. I wonder how and why this one turned out like that? Transparency issue or something...
Wow, Buloght, Snake, and Goodnight Destroyer's pieces are absolutely delicious. I can't comprehend how you guys made such awesome stuff with such a small space! Filax, I love the gorilla-esque portrait. Pk "Mayday" mays, that there, that there is tight. No way it was half-assed.

I agree, some of these are gonna be tough to judge.
Feelings will be hurt, dreams will be crushed,
and Cinderella stories will arise later,
in the BATTLE FOR THE VICTORIOUS PIXELATOR!

P.S. Oh, and Xion Night, that is beautiful. The drapery is delicious. And once again, the extra character, or woman, doesn't add a handicap whatsoever. It wouldn't have been the same without it. Once again, good luck. Our fate is in the hands of the judges now.(slips $20 under the table to each judge...)

snake: thank you! I really like yours as well. The ransparence effect of those umm... tentacles is really cool. I also like the colour choices (especially the green in the background and the toning on the floor).

Oh, and I have no idea what happened to Ryona. At the start of the challenge she sent me a PM wishing me good luck, and told me that she'd go all out on me. Seems the last time she logged in was Feb 2... maybe she has computer troubles?

Oh wow, top tier work everyone. There's no way I'll make it past round 2 if I dick around again.

I'm most impressed with Buloght's entry. Great colors, style, and readability.

And yeah, I was lucky mine came out looking anywhere near decent, and even more lucky I didn't get beasted by Godslayer. If it weren't for Pro Motion's dirty tools, the whole piece would have ended up like the hand and left ear in the current one. I'm gonna finish this, simply so I can look myself in the mirror when I wake up each morning.

Wowowoww. All of the entries are amazing. It really does seem like this competition made us all try are very best.

So last night an hour before the deadline I saved my piece as a JPEG, I was so lucky I had saved it earlier under a different name. But I still lost a lot of work I had done on the skull. :(

I love 9_6's entry so much. Probably my favorite.

And Khris, yours is really great. This is going to be a tough duel.
And I am finally seeing that you were the one worth eating.

Snake vs Opacus:

Snake does a few very difficult things here. First of all, liquid translucency. Then, a full scene, not a sprite. Finally, he adds 'speedlines' that make this amazingly dynamic-looking. To top it all off, the character design, as bizzare as it is, it's also extremely novel. This is an all-around amazing entry, suffering if anything from a palette that could be made to work better in places and a few rough spots in thers of AA.

Opacus suprized me with his entry, as it is quite alright. Hue-shifting in effect, a dynamic post, good aa and light-dependent outlines most of places, sadly an underdeveloped lower body that doesn't seem to be able to withstand its top, and a lack of refinement of the detail work mar this a bit. It's a competent entry, sadly for the purposes of this duel, it cannot compete with snake's wardrobe jelly monster.

Winner: Snake

Delgneith VS 9_6

Delgneiths entry is underwhelming. I find the sparseness of the design taken a bit too far, and the palette is far too monochromatic. It could use some hue-shifting. Sadly this isn't the only invisible monster in this compo, so we can't talk about originality either. I expected more from Delgneith.

9_6's entry is very cute. There's a few issues with lightsource, and the 'to-dark' shadows don't appeal to me. The design is good, however, and so is the pixel arty polish. With a bit more attention paid to AA and coloring this would be one of my favorourite entries thus far.

9_6's psychic slug destroys Delgenith's invisible stalker.

Akzidenz vs SolidIdea

Akzidenz's monster design is lovable. However the pixel technique suffers in places. First of all, AA seems to not be even attempted at most places. The artist should use more shades where he needs them to smooth things out. The background is stylized and interesting, the forms of the beast pleasing, but it needs a lot of pixel-art polish.

Solididea's lawyer shark is a good pun, and the design is pretty okay. I think he needs hands, or at least less malformed fins though. While this wins in terms of pixel art application (though not by lots) the design is a bit underwhelming and seems unfinished in places. Broken outlines don't help!

This is a very close match. I have to hand it over to Akzidenz but a small margin due to more interesting design. If he'd like to survive in further rounds he should hone his pixel artistry foremost.

Lawrence VS Evil-Ville

Lawrence's evil tree has a few things going for it. First of all, amazing pixel artistry, as almost always with Lawrence. Sadly, this piece seems dejavu-ish, and that sorta hurts it in my opinion. I'd love to see Lawrence stepping outside his comfort zone of dark-scenes with secondary lightsource and trees and whatnot. Still, not much fault can be found with his lush lighting and great rendering.

Evil-ville's piece suffers from bad ramping (shade closest to black is too dark) which makes the detail and clarity of the piece suffer, also from anatomy errors. It has nice lightsourceing, although again in the vein that Ville has accustomed us on. There's confusion on what's going on with the face. The design isn't as strong as it'd have to be to win. Cleaner-reading art and more daring choices would probably have to occur.

I have to hand this one over to Lawrence's grinning tree, although not by far. I hope to see more innovation and risk-taking by him in later rounds.

Ryona vs Mirre

Ryona's invisible entry again seems rushed and forced. More effort should be put into it, I feel. Also, I don't want to stress a point, but do we really need the T&A fanservice on this? I mean, okay, it's half-woman, but do we have to s
