Pixel Art in Krita or Pro Motion NG

on: December 28, 2018, 12:07:51 pm
Hi, I have my first doubt.

I have the doubt of start in any of the two programs, (If you have a recomendation to buy another please tell me!

In Krita the main problem is that there is no an isometric view of 30º, but the only possibility is a diagonal angle of 45º

I attach an example of J P Cummins to illustrate what I want to do.

Thanks :)

You can make pixel art in Krita, but it has no specialised tools or Quality-of-Life features made for it, so if you only want to make pixel art, you should obviously go for a program designed for it!

I haven't used Pro Motion NG myself, so I can't tell you anything specific about it. Other popular pixel art editors are Aseprite (possibly the best for pixel art animation, good but not great at everything else), GrafX2 (good-to-great features for all kinds of pixel art, but the old-school UI means a steep learning curve if you're used to modern art programs), and Pyxel Edit (great features for tiles, good for animation, decent at everything else).

I personally use Aseprite, Pyxel Edit, and Photoshop, as I find each has their own strengths, and all three have similar UIs, just adapted for different things. I pick which program I'll use for a given piece/asset based on what I need to do.

You can do pixel-isometric (not actually 30º, but 1:2 lines) in any of these programs by utilising their grid features. Aseprite's Line tool + Shift lets you snap between horizontal, 1:2, 1:1, 2:1 and vertical. Pyxel Edit edit snaps to the same lines if you Shift+Pencil to draw a line, and hold Ctrl to snap. I imagine the others I mentioned give you similar ways to snap to the commonly-used angles.

Another feature to consider is scriptability, for automating tasks or adding features to the program. GrafX2 and Aseprite are scriptable, Pyxel Edit is not. Don't know about Pro Motion. Even if you're not into writing scripts, using other people's scripts can make your life easier sometimes.

Thanks for reply eishiya.

I have been testing and Pixel Edit is for me, I have bought it right now, it has all I need and I like the super-simple interface.

I usually work importing a pencil-paper scan, and this soft can import it and with blending modes!, the palette from image is great also.

Thank you so much!

Nacho.  :) :) :)
