as much a cop-out answer as it sounds, we were decieved in that our government told us that iraq was a threat to our way of life, and barely but enough people believed it to commit to a war that we didn't really want to fight.  al-qaeda on the other hand proved themselves a real threat, but we were still deceived by our government which told us that al-quaeda could be fought and beaten.  injured and frightened, we entered a war against an intangible enemy without realising the consequences.  neither war is one that we can win.

As a nation, I'll accept fickle and impressionable, but not warmongering.

This is not a realistic story, as much as it’s based on reality. It’s a very stylized version.

but still, that quote you posted disappointed me.  until this point i had not heard of him making claims under any pretense of fact.

i can only hope that in the broader scope of things he was talking about his spartans, and not the historical ones.....but something tells me i am too hopeful in this

I realize that, I was speaking from the point of view where a person of latin-american descent doesn't actually consider himself an american of the california variety at all. I was defending the point of view that not all of america is full of americans, because 'american' can mean a lot of other things than 'born and raised on the continent of america'.

My point would be that everyone in these two continents is an american and that their differences all contribute to what an american is.  your 'american' is only a very narrow subset of the millions fo people in these two continents.  i chose california as an example because, while it still only includes the smallest of crossections, it is a cross section much more colorful than the rest.  for instance, there are around 20 black students in my school of 1600, 8 asians, and 75-80 hispanics.  the rest of us are whites, and the cultural differences are not seen.

Athens never engaged in Thermopylae. They didn't send any timely troops. Athens won over Xerxes' father, Darius at Marathon a while before that, and the Spartans arrived two days after the fact and stared at persian corpses. Perhaps you've got that a bit mixed up?

Engaged was an inappropriate word coice on my part, as the 7000 athenians were part of the original force, but not part of the and they did not engage at thermopylae (as they retreated to help evacuate their city and prepare for the naval encounters), nor did the corinthians or half the thebans who fell back a pace.  As i remeber, the rest of the greeks besides the 1350 spartans, thebans, and thespians all withdrew as well and did not fight again until platea, rejoined by the corinthian and theban soldiers.. It has been quite a while, so i wont say that im completely right, but I don't think i'm mixing things with marathon, ten years passed between the two encounters so that would be a gross error on my part if i was >.<

Lawrence - i should have written that as "the legitimate reasons for our being there," since we all know that our politicians are siezed by imperialistic delusions that have influence far beyond reason.

the war-mongering machine consists of a handfull of old men who are highly skilled in their manipulation of information and a people's will, not the nation as a whole.  they all write about how they wish we could be in north korea and iran, too, but they haven't yet tricked enough of us into that.  trust me - america's foreign affairs are highly restrained right now.

the lack of support means that we cannot secure the countries effectively, shut down terrorist organizations, and allow the people to establish legitimate governments.  however, withdrawal is currently unthinkable with the state of things over there, and it will remain so if our soldiers continue without support.  no - lack of support will only make things deteriorate until the situation gradually becomes so hopeless that we cannot even pretend that we are helping.

But that's just the thing, when you call him Leonidas, when you call them Spartans, when you call the other side Persians, it's just asanine to go all 'oops! I don't mean the *real* Leonidas, Spartans, Persians silly, they're my own made-up version, which has little or nothing to do with what we know of history. Were you ever confused?' There's a reason Conan (as most fantasy fiction) is set in a hypothetical land that doesn't pretend to occur anywhere in a real historic timeframe.

I agree you were decieved, for one war, but then you went and did the totally responsible thing and put your decievers back into office in the next elections and it's hard for my heart to bleed for you for the second deception, or the third, fifth, thirteenth, so on.

If the US stops going to a new war every few years and then perhaps global perception will change.

Yeah, I know. This [the 'melting pot' of races, immigrant nationalities, creeds and so on] is how the US has retained a coherent national identity up to the point where they're the nation most proud of being themselves and I still expect a certain amount of deer-eyed 'what, what, you really don't like us?' reaction from americans every time such issues are discussed (not so much you, Adarias, but I guess B.O.B in this case).

something is missing here.

I am not enthusiastic about the resolve of the american populi in not supporting further war action. We'll see. I hope you're right.

Hmm I saw 300 the other night... my favorite kinds of movies are historically based war movies with lotsa killinz! (<3 Braveheart) I personally liked the slowmo... it was really interesting to see him killing the guys and the actual moves and stabs he took. Most movies its like "slash slash slash" everyone's dead. Anyway I think the point of the movie was to be highly stylised like Miller's own writing/art. Pretty much everyone that went to go see it was aware of the innaccuracies but the same goes for Any historical movie or any movie based on a book. I am a Huge ancient history/mythology buff, but even so it didn't keep me from enjoying the movie. I hate when people sit there and pick out all the things wrong with the adaptation, just appreciate it for what it is or don't. *shrugs* I personally enjoyed it and would describe it as "awesome!"

I think it's silly that fighting is going on over something that probably nobody else even cares about (#3).  ::)

Also, 2+ minutes of nudity makes it a porn, apparently.

EDIT: also, from the article they linked to... "[...] it is strongly implied Xerxes is homosexual [...]". Putting your hands on the shoulders of another man automatically makes you gay, even if you are later in your throneroom surrounded by multitudes of half naked bellydancers throwing themselves at anything with a pulse.

khorin - do you mean the one attached to the Band of Brothers films?  that is a good one.

stewlin - lol since they were nearly all actively bisexual, according to records.  there were two groups of people who were socially excluded - those who were only stright, and therefor were not intimate with their friends/companions (therfor having no "true" friends in the world at all), and those who were only gay, incapable of being a father and continuing the family line.

abz makes a good poitn about many other representations.  Anyone ever read/seen Richard III ?  hardly a true word in the play, and it was commonly percieved as truth for generations.  What's more is that Shakespeare could easily have discovered the truth instead of following the words of paid historians like thomas more, who was five years old at the time of richard's death but still acted as though he had witnessed the events when it came to selling his accounts.

I think 'battle-porn' was one phrase, as it was hyphenated. Although I'm not 100% sure.

The movie would probably only be 30 mins. long if it didn't have slow motion. Extremely excessive, imo.

That isn't really a bad thing. Seeing as that's how Seven Samurai is (it is a happy medium, mostly, as it does have slow-mo). Which is my favourite action movie btw.

mccow of the future: I loved Batman Begins. :/ Even the fight scenes.

Doesn't Leonidas at one point in the movie refer to the athenians as boy-lovers?

People really take things the wrong way. People acuse Frank Miller of being homophobic for that line in the movie. (i'm not sure if it's even IN the graphic novel, but they automatically tie everything in the movie directly to him.)

There was actually a thing on the (American) news a while ago when the movie "Happy Feet" came to theatres... the anchor thought it was wrong that they portrayed the penguins as homosexuals. (apparently because they were male, dancers, and had some issue with their father. these are penguins we're talking about...)

Lewis Black made a comment about it later that night on The Daily Show. Something to the effect of "How homophobic do you have to be to have PENGUIN GAY-DAR?!"

That's correct, but i still don't think it applies. I'm sure that the author of this article doesn't find any movie with the same amount of nudity to be a <genre>-porn. They just seem to have this thing against it because it's not historically accurate. (errm... no one ever said... it... was.)

If Frank Miller should be criticised about his sexism, it should be over how he is apparently no longer able to write a female character who isn't a ninja, a whore, or ultimately a ninja whore.

Yeah, I kinda noticed that, reading Sin City. :-\

I've heard the phrase used before. Can't cite any specific examples, though. :durr: Don't feel like googling it, either.
