I would recommend using one thread only to display these small sprites, rather than creating individuals for each one. It's kind of annoying, to be honest. Also, if you want advice, I'd say to un-gradientize the donut/thing, and actually try looking up the way light reflects off of donut/circular type objects. The sun has never been that dark to human eyes, also. And don't be afraid to get a little funky with your colors...
