make one first.  then get members.

its a bit pointless asking someone if they will join a non-existant forum.  If it was for pixel-art, probably not - this place is as good as it gets.  you might get people interested in the other things though.  however it would be better to make a forum specialist in one thing (e.g programming) and not trying to make it for everything.

btw, its Definitely

I've found that focused forums that cover one specific topic always have better content than ones that try to cover too much. So the answer is no.

There's always some spill-over of different topics, like programming discussion in a digital art forum. But if I want to talk about pixel art, I'll go to Pixelation, not the DeviantART pixel art subsection or some such nonsense.

I also believe small focused forums lead to a better sense of community and comradery. It's like living in a small town, where you notice the happenings of everyone, rather than living in a megalopolis where you're just an ant.

well, my whole idea is to make a forum, that opens up new doors for people.

and im only good enough at pixel art to make a forum, nothing else, and no one would go there.

I don't want to sound rude, but there are way better options already, not to mention that I would be sceptical about joining a forum run by a 14 year old kid.
But by any means you are free to make your own.
Good luck I guess.

i was thinking that - but didnt wanna say it.  its true though - how could you run a forum when there are people old enough to be your parents there...

i thought you had to be 16 to join a forum??? let alone run one....

I voted no because I already go here for pixel art and I don't too much enjoy forums about the other topics. :)

Before you start a forum, introspection is in order (at least, it can't hurt) -- what is your reason for starting a forum, and what do you hope your forum becomes? Are you dissatisfied with the other forums covering these topics? If so, why do you want to start a new place instead of improving the old places?

I'm not saying the idea is bad, or good. I'm just saying you shouldn't do it until you can explain honestly to yourself why you're doing it. :) (Understanding your own motivations gives you a twelve times better chance of building something worth building)

I'd say no, for all the reasons above and because everyone and their mom is already doing it, not to mention that these "everything" forums tend to have an initial flurry of activity and hype, followed by a not-so-fun long, spiraling decline :p

Starting a forum, even with all the setup done, is hard.  Attracting, entertaining, and keeping a user base can be tricky enough WITH a niche to focus on... doing so with no focus is almost going to guarantee a low rate of member retention, post quality, and massive headaches for the people who have to create content and activities for members with skills and interests that are scattered all over the place.  Too lazy to scroll and check now but whoever compared this forum to the DeviantArt pixel art forum hit the nail on the head.

Fortunately, we didn't have to "start" Pixelation... while some of us that help run it are founding members, none of us are original moderators or admins.  It was already established for us by Tsu and FE long ago, complete with a loyal community with an interest in seeing it succeed.  If we had to start from scratch now, I seriously doubt we'd have the same result.

Plus, running a forum isn't all that easy.  IMO, all the mods here do a pretty badass job (not patting myself on the back here, in terms of moderating and the day-to-day running of Pixelation the others do way more than I do). It requires a good amount of communication, and since there are often times when there are only a few active moderators/admins on and patrolling, everyone pretty much has to be in agreement on how the forum should be run in order to make appropriate decisions quickly.  If you're lucky enough to have an awesome, like-minded community like we do, you'll be able to divert some attention from peacekeeping and mundane rule enforcement into the improvement of the forum as a whole, but it'll always take up a good amount of the time your mods graciously volunteer to your forum.

well, even if my forum does go downhill, i dont mind. they are fun to work on. and i already have a couple friends(not 14 year olds), who do a lot of modding, and are good at it.

and out of curiosity, who are Tsu and FE ?

I voted "never." There's no reason to start up another internet community, there's no demand for it, and there are already more forums out there than I'd ever be able to browse through in a lifetime.

The only reason for starting a forum like that is so that you can feel like god or so you can try to snatch up some internet fame. The "I hate going to a bunch of different forums" line is bogus, you'd still go to all of the other sites even if you had your own.

Tsugumo and FrozenEmu were the board nicks of the owners of the site that once housed the original Pixelation.  Tsugumo got busy with art school, passed the forum on to the members, and is now working in the industry.  I'm not too sure about Frozen's whereabouts at the moment; he's probably got a degree or two and is coding for somebody :p

Supply and demand. A good reason to start a forum is when it's necessary and nothing else seems to do. Examples are; when a new game comes out and gets huge, when something very specific starts growing suddenly in popularity, when a tight group of online friends feel "public" forums hinder their interaction and need a place to "hang out", etc.

The Internet does not need another art forum, so no one will have a real reason to hang out on yours, so you have no reason to create it in the first place.

omg a forum modded by 13 year olds... what next!?!

Make the damn forum for your own personal fun - just dont expect a lot of folk from round here to join.

i think this should just be locked up, its obvious from the poll no-one wants to join (and it hasnt even been created yet!!).

ps. stop spamming with these pointless threads!
