More most older Windows programs are written in C or C++ using MFC for GUI widgets. Vista marks a migration towards C# using .NET for the GUI.

Basic is all well and good, but see if your local library has any reading material on C, C# or C++. They're the way to go for application programming. The syntax is *somewhat* similar to game maker's, so if you have a grounding in that it would help.

If you are comfortable with Basic, I don't think Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition is a bad choice to get started with GUI programming. You can do some nice thing with Visual Basic and DirectX.

Ultimately though, if you get serious with programming, you'll eventually want to learn C++. Won't hurt to learn C or C# either.

And if you're still clueless, do Wikipedia searches on any terms you aren't familiar with and educate yourself.

Personally, I think the best free way to start for a n00b would be downloading Dev-C++ and the Allegro libraries.

It doesn't get any simpler than that.

Of course, if you can't figure out how to build allegro, then you might need a private tutor :)
