The Oculus

on: January 24, 2007, 01:22:45 pm
Well, Diablo II has been eatting into my pixeling time, so I figured I'd use it as a theme for my next piece. This is a short, almost "chibi" version of one of the best weapons in the game, The Oculus. Its kind of like a magic wand/crystal ball thing. The original can be seen here: http://www.battle.net/diablo2exp/items/normal/usorceress.shtml

For something of that size, I'd recommend using more contrast and exaggerating its features. As it is, I'm finding it hard to see the details you've put in this piece as all the colours are very similar and there isn't a lot of depth. Also, seeing as the bend in the stick and the spike on the end seem to be highly unique elements in the original version, I'd suggest making them a lot more prominent. They're a bit subdued as it is, barely noticeable.

The shinies on the ball are the current draw of the piece, and they work quite well, but try to give a lot more depth of shade to the other parts of the wand.

Man, it's weird getting back on this C&C horse. Haven't done it in so long, heh.

Ok, I juked the colors around a bit. Is it too saturated? I can already tell I'll need more contrast in the yellows... grrr, I suck at color selection!

I think with the size you may want to ditch the outlining on each of the bits that you are doing, and instead make it seem like a solid version and not segmented which is what it looks like to me.  I think it would also make it lot easier for thing such as the claws grasping the orb to be visible.
