Here is a brand new OT thread for you to fill, as the other one was getting too, uhm er... nonsensical.
So, Keep it clean, have fun and keep the death by sand stories to smaller doses.

My brother was ranting and raving about how I should wear the stupid wrist strap, and he used that site to support his argument.

I'm sorry, I just think it's a little hard to look heroic killing baddies when you've got a "fancy wrist strap" on. >:(...but I guess unless I wanna buy a new TV or two, I better wear the damned thing...:(

Yeah, I figure if you don't wear the wrist strap and you end up tossing the Wiimote, breaking something or not, you're going to look even more like an idiot than if you had just worn it in the first place. It like people that feel they're too cool for helmets and then fall on a gravel road and live with rocks embedded in their skull for the rest of their life. Or get hit by trucks and die.

So now that I'm using a Mac, I find that using Pixelation's zoom function makes the image slightly blurry.  Anyone know how to do something about this?

Ah, shit, that's a Mac thing? I thought it was just a byproduct of the zoom feature.

I don't know, I got used to it. But now that I know it's a Mac problem, I'll see if I can figure out how to fix it.

Sorry, forgot to mention it's an advanced option.

In the location bar, type opera:config
In the Quick find box type image
You'll see the check box to disable Interpolate image

I also type trans and disable the Activate On New Transfer option so the super annoying download window doesn't pop up constantly.

Shift+F12 opens display options, I disable the skin and use standard, disable special effects, on Toolbars I disable Start bar and enable Status bar, set Progress bar to off. On Buttons tab, I right click all the crap on the address bar and remove, then add a Home button, and add the 3rd thru 8th fields of the status bar.

Then it's just Ctrl+F12 and adjust other options, and I've got a lean mean browsing machine.

I love the word BURNINATE and lots of other stuff on homestarrunner.com. Especially Strongbad's emails.
Modern artists are told that they must create something totally original-or risk being called "derivative".They've been indoctrinated with the concept that bad=good. The effect is always the same: Meaningless primitivism

A warm and gooey peanut butter (crunchy) and jelly sandwitch, with a chilled glass of milk. I tell you, I'll only eat PBnJ in the privacy of my own room, because it is downright sexual.

And I'm getting sick of all this post LotR blockbuster fantasy movie business. It's a known fact that scifi >>>>> fantasy. Where's my next Serenity or Alien movie?

Lol! That just gave me a mental image of me in a very sticky situation.

And, pkmays, the whole thing about you having a peanutbutter and jelly sandwich in privacy and it feeling sexual is kinda like me with spicey Korean noodles. When it's laaate at night, and I start feeling a bit hungry, I whip out the noodles and enjoy them. And I'll tell you, something about slurping hot, spicey noodles in the middle of the night, and having that pleasing warmth go down your throat and hit the void of your stomach almost feels orgasmic.

Meh. Scifi generally has more boundaries than fantasy, because true science-fiction SHOULD arise thoughts along the lines of "that might be possible". Fantasy is just totally out there, racing its own race on gryphons and horses with tentacles for ears and whatever the doped writers can think up.

Fantasy is also usually more colorful and less... strict, somehow. But on the other hand, it can be a lot dirtier and too low-tech for my liking as well.

I think I've found my preference somewhere inbetween. I was writing a story on and off for a while last year, that took place in a battred-up post-apocalypse future. But one of the main characters didn't even know that, so they were all living out in a village in the desert with old-school fantasy style going-ons, but some buildings were remains of old spaceships and stuff like that. It was kinda cool to dwelve into such a world, where laser guns and super-x-ray vision modules and cyborgs could exist, but don't HAVE to exist.

I think the main difference between science fiction and fantasy is that the former is usually used as a metaphor or cautionary tale, whereas the latter usually focuses on trite morals. Not that I have anything against either - I enjoy me some dragon-slaying rogue knights with magical powers and all - but science fiction has made for far better literature.

What about the world of "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe"? I'd say it has a nice mix of sci-fi and fantasy.

Yeah, I'm pretty much starved for some quality scifi, cause I can only watch reruns of DS9 and Firefly so many times. Star Trek is gone, Farscape is gone, Firefly, Andromeda (though it sucked), Stargate (well okay, Atlatis, but new cast sucks).

I do enjoy some of the scifi with fantasy stuff, like Fist of the North Star, Nausicaa, Warhammer 40,000 etc., but lazers + jumpsuits + spaceship = me_explode. If I didn't have a huge library of scifi novels to choose from, I'd give up on living.

Opps, gotta run. Battlestar Galactica's about to come on.

I hardly delve into either genre for my fiction, but cyberpunk is probably my favorite genre for videogames.  At least for the moment.  It used to be fantasy, when I was into JRPGs, but that time has passed.

I think that the problem with much sci fi and fantasy is that at times they can value cool ideas over characters and literary qualities, becoming more about the ideas than the stories themselves, with authors thinking that they have to make people think "that might be possible."

It's really unfortunate though, that sci fi and fiction get shelved away from the rest of fiction, next to the romance section.  And when someone wants to write a story in the future they say "well, it's not REALLY science fiction" because of the way the genres are treated.

There's absolutely nothing Sci-Fi about He-Man. Poor asimov is rocking in his grave. Well, that is to say when you see pseudo-scientific guns and stuff in a film or something, it doesn't make it sci-fi. At least not any sort of sci-fi people who like sci-fi would like. Fantasy usually has mystical connotations. Sci-Fi, far, far the opposite.

called "Last Exile", has anyone watched that?

I haven't seen I, Robot, and I heard it had nothing to do with the book, really.  Which doesn't surprise me, considering that the book was more of a collection of short stories centered around the three Laws of Robotics.  It was a great book.  "Reason" I think it was called, was my favorite.

Asimov is just a great writer all around.  He wrote some greats essays on math and science that believe it or not were entertaining at same time as instructive.  I wish folks like him were the ones writing the textbooks.

Even though I haven't read the I robot book, I have read alot of Asimov books (most of the foundation books, most of the short stories,
even detective stories and ones about a little devil).

The thing that impressed me about I robot was it was really smart, the three laws are a big part. You should check it out Darien. My favourite part of the movie:

When does a perceptual schematic become consciousness? When does a difference engine become the search for truth? When does a personality simulation become the bitter mote... of a soul?

Dude, did you even watch the film? He was on his Grandmas scooter becuase of the black out (cars didn't work) and he was like
"Get off my motorised scooter" or something like "The three laws can kiss my ass". It wasn't no car or bike.

I read I, Robot and the movie (I've only seen the previews) looks like it'd be an impossible stretch to fit around the book. The book is basically a series of stories about flawed logic and its effects on robots as perfectly logical beings. The book was absolutely great and it was almost like a sci-fi logic puzzle that's actually well-written. There were stories including one about a robot not believing he was created by humans, one about one or two (I don't remember which) robot transporters stuck between danger and their commands, one about a robot friend for a little girl and some others I don't recall. Very good writing though, as are all of his books. I wish my library had more of them.

I would guess that the matrix is taken from a lot of stuff.....the ghost in the shell movie especially...
But its got elements of 1984 here and there.....and the entire story seems to be based on the allegory of the cave...

Just my opinion....no real fact to back any of that...

You could do worse than read Philip K. Dick, Grant Morisson's "The Invisibles" and yeah, a bit of Plato if you'd like to see where the Matrix came from.

Although, strangely enough, Will Smith had the role of Neo pitched to him to be in The Matrix and he didn't understand the idea and thought it would be a ridiculous movie, so he passed it up. Later on his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, joined The Matrix as Niobe.

Yes. She's part of Wicked Wisdom. It was part of the second stage at Ozzfest 2005.

Now, I don't like metal, especially nu metal, but even Wicked Wisdom sounds like it'd be so... embarrassingly bad.

Wicked Wisdom actually played in a town not too far from my home town, a while ago. My friend attended the concert, and informed me that they weren't that shabby. He touched her leg, when she be screamin' in the mic. Purely harmless though. By the by, I really hope that you're not hatin' on the band she's in, if you haven't listened to their songs yet. If you have listened to them, and it's not your thing, than thats cool. But if your just hatin' cause she's a celebrity, and trying a go at metal, then well...stop. It's better that she's actually givin' it a shot, rather than doing the classic RnB, or pop crossover.( bear in mind Nu metal acts don't exactly intrigue me as much, like: Slipknot, Mudvayne, Disturbed, Mushroom head, Bloodsimple, etc. Their ok, but not my thang'.)

I saw I Robot, and thought it was ok. I think Will Smith is an ok actor, just needs to grab a role where he is given a chance to go completely opposite of what he's normally playing(occasional one liners, accompanied by cat vs. mouse action flicks where cops are involved in some way...), like a vulnerable character that more people can relate to, rather than outgoing. As for other movies, I never did like Ali, though. I thought it was boring as hell.
But again, that's just me bieng a tool/hypocrite, since I do like some actors to stay in their type-casted roles, just for the loveability of the roles they play. For example, Christopher Walken. Always wierd as hell, no matter what movie he plays, but is actually no different in real life. He's just...awesome. Gotta love him.
By the by, has anyone else heard that Heath Ledger is playing the Joker? I don't think he's a bad actor, but he might be a little too off and young to replace good ole Jack Nickelson. I personally would have tried to cast Jude Law as the new joker. I mean come on. The guys clean smile says Joker all the way!

I'm gonna hush up now...needs me sleep, and can't wait to wake up tomorrow, to watch my fav' football team( Futbol Americano, that is) get their asses handed to them again. Good bye, play offs...dude, am I still talking?...
my back hurts...

It's a matter of image. I can't imagine Will in a movie like that. Not unless they threw in some smirk-inducing one-liners and a reason for him to scream really loud in a comical fashion in at least one scene. And Matrix isn't really the kind of movie that wants to make you smile.

Haha, the only thing better than people watching is being there to eavesdrop the middle of a conversation and then wondering "How the fuck did that even come up between those two?" Overheard in New York is probably one of my favorite sites ever. I hope to visit there some day soon and hopefully listen to some entertaining people.

B.O.B.: I'm going off of past knowledge of how I don't like the nu metal genre and how actors and actresses don't merge seamlessly into the music scene. First impressions lead me to "Wicked Wisdom is something I don't ever want to listen to." And if I did listen to them, I bet I would prove my prediction true. Please note though, that I did not say they are bad. I said that they sound like they would be embarrassingly bad, since I've never heard them I can't speak in absolutes.

Long shadows:
Short shadows:

Okay I'm working on some gauntlet style graphical assets and would like to get the opinions of some people (such as yourself).

Which of the shadows above do you think looks better (never mind the differing tiles, or the quality of the tiles, they are just structural templates so far)? I preffer the first longer shadows and they are at the same scale as those in gauntlet 2. But I would prefer a higher light source generally, and that would mean shadows for the gate tiles would extend over the tile boundaries (not shown).

Do you think an iso view could work for a gauntlet-style game and would it retain the play feel? I'm generally not fond of iso with directional controls (keyboard, gamepad). Do you know of any iso gauntlet-likes that I could try out?

And a couple other related questions.

Do you know of any free gauntlet-like games? All I know of are the old dos games Myrmidon and Boboli.

A long time ago I played a dos shareware gauntlet-like game and am trying to find out what it was called so I can get it. If I recall correctly it has the following features:
* 320 x 200 EGA graphics.
* Single character a wizard.
* Weapons are fireballs of increasing strength.
Tweak anyone's memory?

That garrison is definately a Gauntlet clone. I'll have to check it out.

Speaking of amigas...I never used an amiga before, but I tried using WinUAE to try out the free version of Personal Paint to research for my own pixeller, I got PP, WinUAE and various kickstarts, but on booting it always seems to want a disk. The version of PP I've got is just an LHA archive. Do i need to make a disk image? If so how?

EDIT...

And another thing in my research I've also been checking out Deluxe Paint and DP Animate and it put in mind an old piece of soaftware by EA with much the same gui as DP with which you composed simple animations out of premade sprites and backdrops and you could drop in speech bubbles and such. I played with it in primary school. Anyone know what that's called?

Well, it's not something I really worry about. Like, I eat and drink pretty healthy and I'm in good shape (dispite my procrastinating habbits. lol), so I'm not really concerned with the "evils" of eating meat. Not to mention that having some meat in your diet is healthy for humans (us being the omnivorous creatures we are).

'hatin' where does this terminology come from? I saw her perform one song on the television and it was quite bad. I listen to Heavy Metal, not Nu Metal or the recent mallcore shit, so I could be out of the loop on what flavour of chugga-chugga is considered good this week, but hey, that's my call, and it has nothing to do with 'hatin' anything.

Just a lil note to anyone who had been wondering about my old site (I notice st0ven's site still had the link to my dead at the top of his list), I should have a new site up soon but the focus is a bit different now.  The old one was just a quickly done piece of crap intended just so I had somewhere to upload and display my pixels and crap.  The new one will have various sections where the pixel art is just one of those.  The main new section is games I've been making.  None which are finished yet, but the current project I'm focusing on which is a NES style shooter (complete with actual NSF format tunes written by a friend of mine) will be available when I launch the new site.

Anyways point is, if there's anyone else like st0ven who still has a link button for my old site and wishes to update the link the new address is http://amon.houseofninzha.co.uk/

Currently theres just a place holder right there, which ain't much but it beats a dead link...  I guess

I dunno...

Am hungry.

on Mac OS X the image is blurred automatically in safari.  perhaps - you can save it as a gif at that size rather than making it big with html.

Ugh, that's a pain in the ass.  Felt sorta proud just learning how to resize pics in the html.  Does it blur when using zoom in things like on this forum?  And does Safari have a zoom function like the Firefox extension and does it blur with that too?

Then it's already unable to be entered, as if I put autofire in it I don't think you'd be able to charge up the weapons anymore and I really like charging up shots.

yeah it blurs images on this forum - but i dont normally go beyond 2x, 3x max - and the blur doesnt really kick in then.

there is no zoom extension for safari.

curious, but what is it that you eat and drink? You can think you are in good shape and still be unhealthy..
there's nothing healthy about eating meat, infact, humans aren't meant to eat meat. It digests very slowly as opposed to other forms such as fruit which are both higher in nutrients and water and digests almost instantly..
It also costs less to be vegetarian, because to raise livestock you have to feed them and give them gallons of water, etc.. also it creates more pollution at factory farms and such, not to mention the chemicals and artificial stuff they put in it all.

I slept through most of 7th grade science but i'm pretty sure they taught us that as our evolutionary predecessors' diets shifted more towards meaty goodness, it allowed our brains to grow larger, which was a pretty big deal since the intelligence of early man (and primitive man-like fuzzwads) is more or less what we owe our continued survival to.  I wouldn't say the same about the intelligence of present-day man though ;p

Plus, meat is delicious, even when it's been stripped from an unwilling animal in the prime of its life, processed, packaged, and exploited for profit.  Mmm, profit.

Hmm i don't think it being digested slowly is much of a problem. Starch is digested slowly and therefore gives a slow release of energy, which we need alongside quick bursts which come with fruit and stuff. The fat in meat is quite important (not as much now, seeing as we eat so friggin much) aswel.

I believe the reason meat takes longer to digest than fruit is because it has high amounts of protein in it and fruit doesn't.

And "not being meant to do X" does not necessarily equate with "doing X is bad for you."

I think only about 1/10th of 1 percent of our calleries we use as fuel comes from protein, so we really don't need much of it.. and when we do need it, we can get it from plant sources..

That line about us not being ment to eat meat seems extremely unlikely.

if you do a comparison between animals and study their similarities and differences, you'll notice how humans are closer to animals which eat fruits and veggies rather than meat..

I was reading an article the other day in National Geographic about cannibal chimps. The oldest ones would eat their babies.

Not that I disagree with anything you're saying, AHW - I'm one of those hypocrites who eats meat but plans on stopping "someday" - but trying to convert people to vegitarianism/veganism on a forum is usually about as successful as trying to get them to change religion or political affiliation.

although i havent heard of that, i have heard that some chimps hunt other monkeys and share the meat, but it isn't for dietary purposes, rather its a form of defining where they are in their rank among their group..

oh, and Im aware of the difficulties in people which shrug it off, but I like to share what I hear, and if anyone listens, then thats good enough for me. its when people don't listen which disturbs me.. :P

Thing is, if someone lives entirely on fruit and green stuff, they're not gonna end up too healthy. Same with meat. We don't survive if we don't eat plenty of both.

I didn't read any links in this thread so far because my connection is THE MOST BROKEN THING I'VE EVER SEEN, but someone sent me this a long while ago and I remembered it when the meat/not meat thing came up. I recall finding it funny.

Guiltless grill? Is there any other kind?

curious, but what is it that you eat and drink? You can think you are in good shape and still be unhealthy..

I eat an assortment of things. I try my best to avoid fast food (and I do a pretty damn good job of it). I barely ever drink soda pop and alcohol. I'm not really one for candy. And against popular beliefe, I very rarely touch icecream.
I'm not only in good shape, but pretty healthy too. I get a ton of excersise by walking alone (my main choice of getting around in the city).

I know what you're trying to say. Too much meat isn't good for you. But isn't that safe to say about everything else as well? Everything in moderation, as they say, right?

there's nothing healthy about eating meat, infact, humans aren't meant to eat meat.

I disagree with both assumptions.
First, meat is quite healthy to eat. Can you argue that so many creatures around the globe who eat meat arn't eating healthy?

And second, humans are indeed meant to eat meat. If you examine the structure of our teeth, you'll see that it leans more towards carnivore rather than herbivore.

there's nothing healthy about eating meat, infact, humans aren't meant to eat meat. It digests very slowly as opposed to other forms such as fruit which are both higher in nutrients and water and digests almost instantly..
It also costs less to be vegetarian, because to raise livestock you have to feed them and give them gallons of water, etc.. also it creates more pollution at factory farms and such, not to mention the chemicals and artificial stuff they put in it all.

sorry man but i don't think i'd give up steak, bar-b q ribs and Fried chicken for spinach and cole slaw. yuckity yuck!

although i havent heard of that, i have heard that some chimps hunt other monkeys and share the meat, but it isn't for dietary purposes, rather its a form of defining where they are in their rank among their group..

I'm sure that is true, however it points out one of the major flaws in vegan thinking. Vegetarian animals eat meat because its what they were meant to do. There is no such thing as a vegetarian cow or horse. They're that way by default so IMO, there shouldn't be much parallel at all :/

we only eat meat because we can, and have been.
I'm sure most people when they are kids, never know what they are eating is from an animal when they eat it, and so when they eventually find out, they give it not much thought because they've been doing it for so long and have grown accustomed to it.
If you're parents do it, you do it..
However, if kinds were shown the entire process of how that food which is on their plate came to be, then i'm sure alot of people would choose not to eat it.
Also, if we had not the tools to take advantage of things so easily, we wouldn't be capable of controlling what happens to other animals. Because we have developed survival skills beyond what any other animal could have, we also use it for methods to take advantage of everything and exploit it for ourselves.
It is often not about what you can do, but what you should do, what is best for not only you, but others, including those which may even be capable of hurting you.

Even if that were true its specualtory evidence at best! If you want to use science to explain yourself than be my guest but you can't just pick and choose what you want. Veganism is a choice. Its totally up to you whether you believe in it or not, however you can't just pull evidence or justification out of a hat.

how inconsiderate  :'(
have you ever investigated where the meat came from?

I didn't have to investigate where my meat came from. I'm Mexican. We literally kill the animal ourselves, and eat it afterwards. I remember when I was younger, I was outside at my Grandparents home in an old town, in Mexico. Apparently, my uncles, and their cousins decided it best to get drunk and kill a pig. So they dragged it out of it's pen, pulled out a fairly large gun, and BAM! They shot it directly in between the eyes.
The sad part is, it didn't die afterwards. I still remember it struggling to stand up, stumbling on the ground, with blood spurting out it's head. The drunkards tried shooting it again in the head, but to no avail. The poor thing(being a mother, while it's piglets where still in the pen) kept wobbling around. After a couple of shots, the pig finally died.
After watching this, I thought to myself, man, so this is what I shove in my mouth. Some poor animal has to be slaughtered to be forced in my mouth, with a sick smile on my face. After they burned the hair off the animal, and gutted the insides, they made Asado with it.
When they served the meal, I remember my mother staring at me, as if she understood that I didn't want to eat it after watching it suffer the way it did. Soon thereafter, however, I couldn't help myself, and decided to grab a plate, and eat the Asado with some homeade beans and tortillas. Bear in mind, I have seen other animals killed before my innocent eyes before, and afterwards, like goats having their throats cut, after bieng hung upside down, and the children(like myself) having to hold it's guts after they gutted it, so we could make some briskette/carne.(goat meat. "Carne" just means meat in spanish, though.) I finally started to realize that I had nothing to be sickened of, or ashamed of, since in fact, that was my culture, at least where my parents and their ancestors came from. From what my mother and father have told me, they have witnessed worse, from what their poorer relatives had to live off of, and eat.(the whole drunk beaner shooting thing was pretty awful, though, I must admit)
So in short, I will never give up meat, no matter what "better" organic foods there may be. It sounds stubborn, I know, but bear in mind, I eat more fruit than meat, on a daily basis. However, completely giving up meat in my family, would almost make me feel like I'm spitting on their culture/way of living. I can't deny who I am, or where I'm from, and am proud of it.....And I f***ing hate goats. They're creepy looking...
my back hurts...

That almost sounds like you're suggesting that eating meat is moraly wrong when infact morality has nothing to do with it.

You need to consider the food chain. Those that are at the top of the food chain are always the best survivors. The fact that humans devour just about anything that gets in their way greatly contributes to why the species has done so well.

Even if in a thousand years from now the whole human race becomes vegetarians, they still have to thank their meat-eating ancestors for being strong and fearsome in the animal kingdom, and through it, becoming the top dogs.

I doubt a herbivore species could ever rise above the rest as the dominant species.

Diet has nothing to do with why we're the top of the evolutional ladder.. it's because we're capable of conscious thought and create tools. The moment that conscious thought factors into the evolutional equation, diet gets factored out.

I wasn't saying it was solely the reason. just a big part of why humans did so well. It can't be denied that if we didn't have such diet that we wouldn't do so well. Especially during the ice age.

Probably the only reason we started making tools was to hunt.  So diet has everything to do with it, albeit in an indirect way.

when there's morality and right and wrongs.. there aren't any exceptions to killing, either it is right or it is wrong.. killing a person is no more right or wrong than killing an animal. We tend to disconnect and make exceptions in order to believe certain things are ok, when in fact they are not.
I would like to see the day when some scientists comes and proves consciousness exists within each animal..

The human's position in the evolutionary pathway is a hotly contested issue, I don't believe any of us have the authority of knowledge on the issue. Kon's... thoughts on the morality of meat-eating are I guess maybe of interest to most, I find that rhetoric empty when approached from the angle he's doing it. I'd be interested in a debate over the inherent moral charge in the manipulation of natural resources, be them alive or not, by humans, but not from the vegeterian point of view. I fear I've been online enough to have exhausted any interest in that sort of debate by now.

Anyone who considers morality in absolute terms hasn't got much to discuss with. I am afraid I don't agree with you and that's that.

well, if you believe the act of killing is wrong, and then go kill or support killing, then somehow you are disconnecting from that belief while you partake in the bad so that you dont take on the shame in doing it. You can't have any exceptions in a moral disposition, because they'd simply be a method of taking a blind eye towards one side. This hoewever doesnt mean that doing bad makes you bad, simply that you did a bad thing, and people don't even want to admit their fault and instead continue doing bad things in an effort to somehow make it be right.

I might have agreed at one point, but people toss the words around so much that they've lost a lot of meaning.  Before you decide if doing (or not doing) something is right or wrong, you have to ask yourself: at the end of the day, does it matter? :p if not, then right and/or wrong don't really apply.

does it matter or does it not..

with every polarity, you have something which is, and another which is it's reflection.. You can either choose to go with the illusion, or you can go with the reality.. It's up to you since it is in your perception.

I am sorry, I do not understand this concept. 'Reality of polarity' seems a linguistic misuse if anything, and about 'reality' and 'sensory perception' perhaps you should do well to study a bit of epistemology.

If you're proposing some sort of mutable dualism, well... isn't that convinient? Everything you do is 'reality' and everything else you don't like other people doing is following illusions. I dunno where you get this stuff, but I fear it might be full of holes. But if it works for you, hey.

On a further note, I am no spelling nazi, but if we're going to discuss on this level, " it's " is short for "it is".

no..
an action is real.. i don't understand how you came to the understanding that what other people do is an illusion.
what a person is not doing however is a reflection of what they are doing, and therefor it is a polarity, and in this polarity one is reality, while another is an illusion.

Both of you have just spiraled into another dimension of strange. Just a suggestion, but mayhap you two should discuss this through pm's or something. I mean, I know this is supposed to be Off topic non-sense, but now it's turning into a heated debate of "The Mighty Forum" vs. "the lone warrior." There are 2 sides to every issue, and we've heard both opinions and such. Both were well formulated, and discussed. As Feron put it, "End of"...(out of context, of course) I, for one, don't understand why you guy's are taking this topic so deep.(bah, now I've drug myself into this.)

Vegans: can't understand 'em, can't kill and eat 'em without going to jail.

understanding and not understanding are polarities, where one is reality and the other exists as a perceptual illusion which can be taken as real, but is actually not. You do not understand because you stop to acknowledge the reality of the illusion which the polarty produces and therefor become entangled within it. It is true that you don't, but the belief that you can't is brought about your stunned state among the disposition it creates.

To switch things around, what exactly are people expecting or wanting for Christmas this year?

what you are wanting is not what you will be getting, because what you get is actual as opposed to the perception which is produced from an altered state of reality, but more a state of creation based upon the past understanding in memory.

heh, this is fun..

You do not understand because you stop to acknowledge the reality of the illusion which the polarty produces and therefor become entangled within it. It is true that you don't, but the belief that you can't is brought about your stunned state among the disposition it creates.

No.  Our inability to understand you is a result of your failure to communicate effectively.  You're swinging tautologies about with ambiguous "it"s, so that it is really difficult to make sense of what you're trying to say.

I'm wanting an electric guitar and amp for Christmas. Nothing too fancy, just something as a hobby to help when I'm not pixeling. And if not a guitar, then I want the most raddest damn instrument ever known to man. I bought myself a 32 inch widescreen lcd tv (any bigger and it would be too big for the apartment unfortunately), and an Onyx surround sound system. Holiday starts mid-next week! Can't wait to tuck into some MEAT in front of that tv and watch a good movie.
I would have bought a sofa but unfortunately none of them will be able to fit through the apartment door D:

Do you mean Volito2? Yes, I have it. If you never had a tablet, I can say it isn`t bad for the beginning. For me as for a person who does graphics from time to time and generally for my own pleasure, it`s not even that small and unpractical as it seemed while buying it.

I've wanted a tablet for a while. Been looking at a Wacom... eeh... Graphire? Or something? A5. I think I just might order one right now, and it'll be here by the time I come back from visiting my family... I should be gone for a week or so, and then I'll come back to a brand new tablet...

Man Alex, does PETA or someone similar pay you to try to convert people not to eat meat. Just let people do what they want with their lives.

I have been a vegetarian for 6 years and now I am a pescetarian (as in I eat fish but not meat). I do this for various reasons which I do not need any justification for and no one else should need to justify their eating habits (as long as it's in the legal realm).
I knew where my meat was coming from at a very early age, because I grew up in a small town with many farm. I seen cows and pigs get slaughtered, so what, I still ate them and liked it.

To me it seems that you are thinking what you do is the most righteous thing and others who don't do the same are wrong. If those are your thoughts even remotely, snap out of it, shit like that leads nowhere. If you are happy without eating any meat (are you vegetarian or vegan btw?) then do so but don't try to convince others into it. If someone does not want to eat meat he can come to that conclusion by him or herself.

PETA.. ugh..
well, Ive only ever known a few vegetarians, and they were all very annoying, whenever they come over for dinner or something they insist we all must eat no meat that night and try to convert us as if its some form of enlightenment.
it is something I would consider noble if it weren't for the vegetarians I have known.

Hehe, I can see what you mean. As I said I was a pure vegetarian for 6 years and now eat fish, but I never forced or demanded from someone that they don't eat meat if they want to. It's people who try to force their ideals and beliefs on others that are annoying and that goes for everything, food, religion, politics.

heh, this is fun..

It's not fun, and if what you are trying is to sound intelligent and all philosophical, you are failing.
You are free to expose your opinions, but if anyone has a different one you disagree with, either try to convince cleverly or just accept it, but don't confuse the hell out of people with random posts about polarities and how stuff that does not matter at all is involved.
I have nothing against you as a person, but all those posts like "what you want is not what you will get blah blah" or like "maybe it's something, but maybe it's not" are annoying the hell out of me. Do you still agree with all that random stuff you wrote about after re-reading them?  It looks like you have nothing to say but still trying to put a philosophical point to it.

Edit: As for wants, right now I want a wii, but doesn't exacly have to be a thing for christmas (more like BEFORE it).

I think right and wrong is a reality of polarity. A mechanism of direction. It is a real thing which is percieved.

Come on now, any good empiricist could clearly see right and wrong are NOT real things since they can not be percieved by the senses. Yo must use reflection to come upon your own belief of right and wrong. Everyone knows that silly :P.

(I just wrote a philosophy exam, sorry.)

I want a tablet or a new semi-acoustic guitar. My guitar right now is a hand-me-down from my grandpa and it's restrung to be a lefty for me since I'm ass backwards left handed. It has a piece of paper to hold the E string up so it doesn't touch the first fret... and there's a hole in the side with duct tape over it.

I've got an Intuos3 9x12, and it's pretty flippin' ridiculous. I had to change my setup by sitting the keyboard on my lap to have enough room on my desk to work with blasted thing. I've also owned and operated a 4x5 Graphire2 and a 4x5 Graphire3, and there is a definite difference in the accuracy of a Graphire compaired to an Intuos. My design teacher stocked all 20 something of the workstations with Intuos3 6x8s, and if I where to buy an Intuos4 when it comes out, I'd probably go with the 6x8s rather that the hulking beast I have now (although, I do love it still).

There's a huge price difference between a Graphire and Intuos, but from my experience, it's well worth the wait to save up for a larger Intuos than to get a 4x5 Graphire, which is literally like drawing on a napkin.

How many philosophical terms can you jam in a phrase that a normal person would make in less than 10 words perhaps?
And the thing is that the OT place isn't the only place. You post like that in the Admin forum aswell.

And as a mod/admin, shouldn't you (ideally) be reading practically everything that is going on around the boards to take care/action if necessary?
Now you have a responsibility, and you can't just go "whatever, LOL!!!"
If that is the way you think, I'm dissapointed.

I clarified my points, on that thread.
I just want him snap out of his "posting random philosophical talks wherever I can" thing, to keep it out of the boards, at least where it is out of context. At times I won't mind, but he is going overboard.
If I need to be critical to make him realize about it, I will be.

@Baccaman21: have a good one, guy, and be careful. I hear thar' be heathens over them hills.

@Skull: I agree. Ain't nothing better than being a lazy bastard. guilty, guilty, guilty...

@Morganne: Lucky ass. In Texas, the closest I've gotten to snow is sleet, and it hit about 40. The sad part is, it was enough to take down a whole city block, near downtown. It was completely blacked out for as far as the eyes could see. Shows how much our region isn't made for snow, or cold weather. The nice part was, I finally got to see how purrty' the black sky looked like, without the city lights. Felt just like home.

@Blick: Thats crazy. I was under the impression that Alaska was filled with fluffy white snow all over the place. When it does snow, does it get pretty bad?( I remember you once told me that you guys suffer occasional tornado warnings sometimes...if my memory serves me right)

I've been eyeing the same one, actually. It's really cheap on Amazon and comes with Corel Painter and Photoshop Elements.

I have one. It's very small though, I just prefer drawing at a scale of 1:1. (Dear God, architecture design classes wind me up)

I've never mentioned tornado warnings...

The past few years it's been crazy weather. Late cold winters, little snow. It snowed in June, I think it was, over the summer. For two days. It was strange. Then we get ice days in January and February way more often it seems. When it rains during the day more than usual and then freezes before morning and everyone is afraid to drive. I used to live right off of the busiest road in North Pole, not counting the highway, and on ice days I could go outside during the evening and just slide around with my shoes on in the middle of the road because no one was driving. Sometimes we get those times where it snows down hard, but it's usually at the beginning and end of winter when it's warm enough to snow. Yeah. warm enough to snow. 10 to 20 degrees makes the best snow. Nice rigid snow that'll hold it's shape.

What really sucks is when fog comes in from Fort Wainwright, which is right next to the Richardson Highway, on a bad ice day. Because the cars also make a lot of fog from their exhaust and it doesn't go away until it gets warmer, so people drive like 30 on the highway and you can only see a cars length or two ahead so you don't know if they guy ahead of you is an idiot doing 30 or someone that's actually doing the intelligent thing and just going the usual 5 to 10 miles under the speed limit. I remember last year I almost crashed on my way to school because someone was doing 25 on the highway, and I had about ten feet to either slow down (I was going 45) or swerve, I chose both and I'm lucky I didn't spin out into the ditch.

I got chips the other night and on the way home from the chippy I found the can of coke I bought there and had been carrying in my hand had sorta got stuck to the skin of my palm and fingers.  Had to run hot water over my hand and the can to seperate them easier then put the can in the fridge to cool it again.

I still prefer the winter to summer though

Ryumaru, I'd imagine you have multiple USB ports on your computer, so both can be plugged in simultaneously although if you feel like it you can just use your tablet as the mouse. My Wacom Graphire 3 came with a mouse that could use the tablet as a mousepad.

What the hell... a shop for fish and chips? That seems strange.

I would do that, but most of my friends, colleagues, old class mates etc etc, are scattered around the world  (varying from Japan, to Spain, to Australia, to the States, Canada, etc etc), so it's rather hard. :0 (and if you are wondering, not all of them are e-friends >:0 , it's just that I moved a lot)

yes, it was a pretty cheesy kids movie with some scenes that really made me cringe, but thats all to be expected, it was much more tolerable than i was expecting.

I have dual citizenship. British and Australian, so I jump ship depending on who won... I guess I just like gloating at the end.
I wanted England to do better than they did though... this series was pathetic.

Main thing is, and this is the truth, England waited till.. perhaps the 3rd test to play Monty Panasar (sp) - who has been said to be the greatest Spin-Bowler in the world.. So what's up with that!??!

It's true the second test could have been very different if he had played, but I thought as a general rule England's bowling was pretty good... it's their batting and fielding that let them down.

I got white shoes.
(With the reciept >.>;)

And some hand-me down pants from my little brother.
Because they were too big for him.

But I got some cash from the eldest of my elders.
So I could probably buy either an anatomy manikin for practicing my anatomy.

Or a really cheap tablet.

Family bought me a 4*5 inch wacom. Great present. Stupid question, does anyone use their wacom tablet with plastic wrapping
it came in still on? It means you can't press the buttons, but you can move your pen faster. I only just started using it, but that seems
like the best way to me.

I don't know what you mean by plastic wrapping, but perhaps you can cut holes in it where the buttons are?.. are the buttons physical, is this why you cant press them?

I got me a lovely leather jacket, moisturizer, perfume, and a lava lamp. I'm a little suprised I didn't get any books this year.

I couldn't really ask for anything more because, well, I'm not big on material posessions. lol

Anyway, I don't really do Christmas. Like, it's a fine holiday and all, but to me, it's just another day like any other.

Oh, and I'm sorry to hear you didn't get any presents, Frychiko. Or maybe it's not a big deal to you. I don't know. heh

Nice presents.
Yeah I don't really celebrate Christmas so I doesn't bother me but I bought myself some nice presents anyway hehe. Being a gadget fan, I bought myself a 32 inch tv, a cabinet for it, a media player for it (so I can stream my mp3/movie files from my pc to the big screen!), a 300gb hdd, 5.1 sound system, a sofa and prepared a room for it all (new lights, long wires and stuff). I was gonna get a laptop also but I didn't want to go overboard..

I couldn't believe a mere 3(or maybe it was 2 or 1) metre cable could cost over $300... (when I was shopping for video cables)

I'm not big on material possessions, and I'm not a Christian either, after so many years of being a greedy Christian child, the best part of Christmas now is seeing everyone happy and getting the family all together
and for the last few years Ive never really came up with anything I wanted when people ask, so I usually only get some small things, you know; bad joke books, candy, alcohol, money etc
As long as you put thought into any present, they're always happy, and for me, the time they spend deciding on a present, or even worrying is more than enough

Heh, of course there's a ton of Swedes here, Mirre. I'm surprised you didn't figure me out sooner. I drop clues here and there. There's quite a few scandinavians around. I think I've known five or six of them, at least. But I don't know if they're still around now, and I can't remember names either...

You shouldn't be surprised, anyhow. Scandinavians are REALLY into retro-style things (C64/Amiga music, demoscene stuff, pixel art, retro gaming).

Well, I got a bit of money (which was nice since I'm saving for a new computer), Black Orchid by Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean, a book whose name I don't remember, a sweatshirt I'll never use and...that's it. Was nice seeing all the kids in my family getting all they wanted while I got (almost) nothing.

EDIT: Oh yeah, almost forgot, I also got a webcam which doesn't work on my computer! YAY!

I have yet to meet this majority. Guess I go to the wrong places.
Well, there is no majority. I'm just saying, looking at percentage in communities and relative to population and stuff, I've found that Swedes especially are pretty big on retro things. But especially Commodore 64 related stuff. I think, if it wasn't for us, the C64 scene wouldn't have been half the size it is today as both www.c64.com and the best online radio station EVAR, www.slayradio.com were founded by Swedes. Many gaming magazines over here also seem to have a retro section or two where they talk about old games, or even remake modern games into C64/NES/Amiga mock-ups. At least the ones I find in the cafeteria at my school. I'm just assuming we're big on the retro thing as a whole, as it seems logical.

Ryona, don't worry about stuff. There's a ton of lonely nerds on here that let their brains go wild over the idea of a real female making suggestive remarks like that. Play your cards right, and you may end up the queen of geekland!

As for new years stuff... Meh. I've never done that. From the looks of it, I'll spend the countdown alone at home in front of the computer with the TV on in the background, and Animal Crossing: Wild World sitting next to the keyboard. I remember the first time I decided to watch the countdown while online... It was the beginning of the year 2000. I lol'd at all those people who thought my computer would blow up for being on IRC at the same time.

Ryona, don't worry about stuff. There's a ton of lonely nerds on here that let their brains go wild over the idea of a real female making suggestive remarks like that. Play your cards right, and you may end up the queen of geekland!
Haha, I think if a girl even expresses interest in a site nerds frequent, she's Queen of Geekland for that moment at least.

I don't make New Years Resolutions. I can't commit. Maybe if I made a New Years Resolution to commit, I'd be stuck in a contradiction so powerful that it sends me spiraling into an infinite loop of half assing everything for the year.

Yeah, so I wouldn't change either way.

Although, I wouldn't mind a haircut, job and girlfriend. Maybe I should work on obtaining those.

I had a good haul this year, but it will be my last Christmas living with my family, so I don't expect to get more than a book or cd ever again.
I got a laptop, some money, a 3rd Wiimote and a bag to carry the laptop in.

And to add my two cents to the sub-topic, if Ryona's as cute as she depicts herself in her art, she can be my Queen.

I'll be somewhere in Washington. Probably ask my dad to get me a bottle of wine if he's okay with doing so. That's about it.

You could find a girlfriend who works at a hairdresser's that's hiring.

I disagree. You can always get a rock to hit two birds if you throw it right but three is just having good luck.
