I think this is looking good.  The colors seem spot on, and the shading is pretty consistant.

Few problems I see though, the brim on the hat could be much bigger and droopy (well that's how it is in most final fantasy games).
There's one small spot of highlighting that I would personally just goto blue with, and that's on the chest.
And most of all, where's the yellow eyes; your piece follows two of the three rules of making a black mage: the big hat and blue robe you got down, but your missing the ominous yellow eyes.

But so far, this is pretty good. Keep up the good work.
Man cannot remake himself without suffering for he is both the marble and the sculptor.

theres 36 by my count.  Not huge, but not very conservative either.

for the style you were going for, my only concern is that i cannot see the little glowing jawa eyes, which are a mainstay of the FF mages
A mistake is a mistake.
The same mistake twice is a bad habit.
The same mistake three or more times is a motif.

There are 13 colors, though I think it could be done with less without losing any information.

As for the picture, I would use the purples and dark blues to AA where the hat meets the black part (the face).
I would avoid dithering, as at that size, what you want is to put as much detail as you can, not blend colors.
The dark blue is too dark to put as inner oulines and shadows (at least IMO).

And well, add the mentioned characteristic features (the eyes, bigger hat etc).

Woohoo, the almighty black mage. My favorite! :P
I really like the color choice, especially on the hat.
The ripple on the front of the robe looks a bit awkward to me... mayby it's because the shadow is so dark?
And why is his left arm extended like that? Mayby he needs to be holding a staff or something ;)

@8bitty
Don't you think a pose like that would be a bit difficult in a 29x34 canvas?
