Cortex Command screen captures

on: December 01, 2006, 11:46:11 am
I just found this forum - love it!

I've been working on this for a few years... a game engine that is true to clean 8-bit pixels, but has a detailed physics engine so you don't have to make canned animations for everything:

Most of the pixel art is by Prometheus: http://itchstudios.com/psg/

More info & free test version to dl: http://www.datarealms.com/

C&C most welcome.

I'm aware of your project, I hope it goes well. Prometheus is a very able graphician. This however is a critique forum, so if he wants crits on his pixel art he should post a few pieces on a new thread. We'll be happy to have him. You understand, it's a bit difficult to give critique to a middle-man.

This should then probably be moved to general discussion, where the actual mechanics of your engine and the like can be discussed by the userbase.

Sure, I understand.

I was thinking along the lines of getting crits on the output of the animation system, but what you say makes sense.

So, comments on the way the walk animation works and/or doesn't work would be appreciated.

(PS I did pixel my avatar from scratch! so there. :P )

Oh hey, I remember getting your e-mail about this. :)
The game is badass. I think the animation system looks fine. A bit wobbly, but it works. Although personally I would prefer a combination of traditional animation (for running, shooting, jumping) and this system (for getting blown up and killed). I think that would give the characters a bit more personality.

Hay, I've played this game before! Downloading the test version, I'll have comments in a bit.

Yeah, I've played this before too. Fun stuff. When I first played it, though, I thought the exact same thing as Junkboy about combining traditional animation with the system you have now.
Everything seems kind of jittery.
I'll play it more thoroughly when I get home and ship you some comments. For now, though, Good luck.

Oh yeah, Prometheus is awesome. Cool to know you have such a good artist on your team.

I agree, a network multiplayer would be sweet.  I could honestly play this game for hours. and having a gamepad does, in fact, make it much more enjoyable in my opinion.
I had seen Prometheus' site and works before, but i never knew he was linked to pixel-arts so closely.  I love his robot/android/etc designs.

Anyway, this is great work. Looking forward to future progress. Keep it up. :)
