Snowy Place

on: November 29, 2006, 05:50:42 pm

This is a small mock-up I've made, to break out of my comfort zone.
The story goes like this, you are a snow fairy who lost her wings. And now she has to find them.

Any critique would be great.

interesting colors...  feels very cold... :)

backgrounds lacking detail perhaps? :S

Did the fairy lose her head too? ... and is she related to a lemming? :D

Very nice setting, suits the story that goes with it. the fairy looks a bit plain though maybe make her a bit bigger? (it is a girl right?)

Anyway nice use of the c64 palette, looks great ;) :y:

is it a C-64 pallette? I guess it's similar but it's not quite there...  (I might be wrong) -

and on that note... I too must creep back to my hole - to await the sunsrise and another fun filled day.

Farewell.

@Scotteh:
No it's not the C64 palette.

I don't think I'll make her any bigger, because she will get her wings back early in the game.

@Baccaman21:
Yes, the background I just kind of slapped on, I'll work on it some more.

Now that you mension it, she does look like a lemming.

EDIT:

I added some detail to the background(not too happy with it).

I completely redid the fairy(and one pixel taller to!) and gave her, her wings.

Right now the whole thing looks like they are normal ground tiles with a white/blue palette. It doesn't scream "I'm made out of snow and ice"
I would give the sides bigger cuts, as if it were an iceberg that tore from some land or something. And I'd up the contrast and saturation of some colors to make it look more icy.
The tiles dont look repetitive, so I guess you did a good job, though they look rather flat.

The character itself doesn't read that well, though it improved from what you had at first.
Also I'm not really a fan of those black/dark blue outlines on it. While it works making the character stand out, I think the whole focus gets shifted to it. I'd make it lighter.
But that might be just me.

Good luck with further updates

I'm pretty sure you get them once you reach the 320 posts... or so I recall

@Hidden killer:
 I hope her hands are small enough now(they are one pixel, heh).

@Panda:
Well, I think I covered your post in my update, except do you mean "though they look rather flat." as in none of them look as though they are in font/behind each other? if so, I will add that to my update list.

I did a fast edit of what IMO would look better.

The tiles look better now, but I think it's better to keep the BG as a BG, with a softer palette (so I cropped the tiles on your last edit and pasted them on the bg you had before)

The oulines on your characters are too light now, I meant it more like if would look better if it weren't that dark, but they need to be dark enough to highlight the sprites.
I put a dark blue, but not as dark as the one you had (and randomly changed the colors of one character, so it could work as an enemy or something).

Looking good though. Can't wait to see what it ends up like.

yup they look good now
earlier also they were looking good but i cudnt see the difference between the lower half part of the wings and the hands
so it looked like ur fairy had some ultra long hands...lol

@Panda:
Thanks for the edit,
I gave the fairy a dress, and (hopefully)incorporated your suggestgens.

@hidden killer:
Oh yes, I can see how you thought that :D.

Ok, I'll call this finished unless anyone sees something quite wrong with it.

I like the original colours more, they look colder and more fitting. The new colours make it look almost slimy.

I did a fast color tweak.
Not as saturated as the last update, but not as unsaturated as the first one, and looking cold and icy.
