The Official Pixelopolis Off-Topic Thread

on: September 17, 2005, 03:28:05 am
Let the good times roll!

     • Did you sign up for the Pirate activity?

     • Forum has been running smoothly and there have been lots of good critiques being shared. Awesome, great work everyone!!

     • OT Question: Which classic video game characters have done the best to maintain their dignity over the years, and which are whores to the industry?

You're welcome to talk about anything, including how well or how poorly the officers are conducting themselves; this is the off-topic thread. Keep it clean!

Is the whole first post thing still popular? If so, OWN3D!

If not, ignore that.

Ugh. My school's football team got slaughtered at homecoming. It was something like 42 to 20 something. It wasn't even a game. It was a merciless assault upon our reputation.

At least NP was state champions last year.

Umm... nope. The host I used last time (a friend of a friend of a friend) is like... not doing well at the moment. So I can't use that again. And I have absolutely no other place to put things. I do still have the demo, though, so don't worry. You'll get to play it again.

god... i saw the video earlier on the revolutions controller, but jeez that "standard" expansion one, looks clunkier than the original xbox controllers, you know, the one with the flying saucer sized circle in the middle of it, that had the xbox logo, that did absolutely NOTHING but take up space. Ha, I really just love small controllers, I don't think one should get a workout from playing video games.

Its the size of the wavebird, which i don't recalll being any bigger than the GCN controller.

the Xbox was just big, the gamecube has comfort fittingness, which is why i didn't even notice the difference when using a wave-bird.

yea looks very simular to the wavebird (which i've only heard good things about, never tried one myself though)

anyway, i really think nintendo has a winner on their hand with the revolution, looks to be very different from what we'll get with the xbox360 and the ps3. there's alot of money in these quirky/gimmicky games...i mean,  just look at how much the eyetoy has sold.
nintendo hurray! :D

So, I just found out that buying a car gets really complicated really fast. Loans, insurance specifications, organizing it in a way that my mom can keep control of my car without actually owning it...

Here's to 4 years of monthly payments of $115. Not counting insurance.

*sigh*

I think the picture with the ign logo is just a mockup.

But yeah, I am psyched for the revolution.  The whole "hold the analog in one hand and the other part in the other" reminds me of playing perfect dark with two controllers.  Awesome.

Also, I am out of the pixelling game until I get a mouse for my laptop.  I just can't stand using the trackpad.

Sawtooth is correct, the Wavebirdesque picture is a mockup.

I am in love with the laser gun shell. Brings the Duck Hunt memories back. Man, I love Nintendo.

Wow, someone who actually loved Duck hunt? I thought there was a universal despisal for it and that damn laughing dog. But, yeah, I'm also getting psyched about the Revolution. I admit that the first time I saw it I was liike, "hunh, that's a weird remote, now where's the controller?" After reading through the decriptions of demo ideas though, I'm getting real anxious to try the thing out. Especially the one about zelda and metroid. It would be so cool to using that remote and swing it around like a sword.

BTW camus, what's up with that new MGS? Has Snake lost his mind in old age and gone on a killing spree in a retirement home?

I don't have Nintendogs. I have barely any games for my DS. Which probably won't change since I prefer my SP much more.

ha, i have a psp, a ds and a sp, i really do love the sp, but the display on the DS that is used for GBA games seems more crisp. The only thing I don't like about the DS is the size of the damn thing, I think instead of making 2 screens they should have just made a big screen, but whatever..

Heh, I got 99 water, 99 canned food, all frisbees ( normal camo and sponsor, is there more?), sunglasses, Luigi hat, $900 and more.  Yet I got the game yesterday.  The trick is to go on walks every half hour to get stuff and save before competitions so if you lose you can just retry.  No cheats man.

That's because the DS is backlit while the GBA SP is lit from the sides.  I'm sure the LCD is a little better too.   ;D

My insurance is over $854 for every six months. That's after using the system as much to my advantage as possible.

I own a dark blue sedan, never have wrecked. It's because I'm not legally an adult and male. Damn you statistics for making my insurance higher. My cousin has a huge truck, female, underage, $82 a month for insurance.

Dammit.

I love driving, i learned how to drive from playing video games all my life... seriously... Anyway, I haven't had a car for like a year and a half, but my girlfriend has a car, and she hates to drive, so I'm her driver most of the time, which I don't mind. Too bad we have a pretty sucky car, but hey, it beats riding the muni all the time.

I hate gba games that make you have to link up to other GBA games to get special items. I was playing through Boktai recently and got completely shit on by that GBA connectivity crap. Basically, the hardest dungeon in the game with all the best weapons requires that you collect 7 emblems. The only hint that you get for collecting them is a note that says emblems are gained through 'emblem resonance' with emblem reson.. being differently coloured than normal text to emphasize it. I never got what it meant, so I continued on and after getting fed up with the dungeon never seeming to indicate that I was progressing I tried looking up some tips on getting the emblems. Surprise, surprise, 'emblem resonance' is the game's quirky way of saying "link me up to another GBA, asshole."

Stupid Nintendo. I don't have any goddamn friends to link up to, jerks. Why the fuck do you think I play SINGLE PLAYER video games for?!

BTW, as a tip for anyone looking to play Boktai or any of its sequels, buy it then play the rom. The solar sensor is incredibly awkward to work with and it got on my nerves to play with the sun obscuring the screen. Also, as you need sunlight to play, you are at the mercy of the weather and time when you wish to play. If you can deal with this stuff, though, then go right ahead and play on your GBA. I will fully admit that the boss battles are 10x better on the actual hardware. They're really quite exciting as the game detects various levels of sunlight and this makes boss strength vary quite dramatically. One moment you'll think you have the upperhand, and then the sun will move behind a small cloud for a minute and you'll become significantly overpowered. The boss might even take the opportunity to run so you've have to work frantically to keep it from escaping.

Oh yeah, great game. I just get a little pissy when a game waves a carrot in my face and then throws it across a hundred foot wide canyon.

Shesh don't they notice that people who spend over 40 hours playing a specific game don't have friends that also have that game?  Or friends any at all?

PS Am I the only one in the world who can't stand Final Fantasy?  Am I?
Don't you even think about playing the RPG games are too sophisticated for your shoot em up type card.  I love games like RPGs Morrowind, Fable, Indigo Prophecy, LOTR games, Yu-Gi-Oh World Champion Games, Golden Sun, Old Pokemon Games (Red, Blue, Yellow) and Magic: The Gathering, (Would The Sims 2 count as a RPG and a Sim?  I mean you can level up your character...); while I can't turn down a good shooter like Halo 2, Postal 2, Unreal, Quake and Half Life.
It's just why have a beautiful game like Final Fantasy and make it turn based?  WHY!!
Huh, I got a weird game preference... I hate sport games and most racers, (Cruisin Series, Burnout, Rush, and NFS are good racers in my book... I have to stop rambling...
Well this is off topic... I love this thread!

No. Personally, I have little experience, but something screams in my face that Final Fantasy is one of the most overrated titles ever. The only game worth my attention was 3/6. And I didn't even bother to complete that.

Now, there is ONE excellent FF-style RPG out there... a single one... the first RPG I ever actually completed (besides Pokemon, but that barely counts)... They call it Chrono Trigger.

Now excuse me while I go beat my eyes out with games no one who's not already into them will never understand.

And for me, it's not just the blatant cash grab either. I don't have a problem with games that want to sell you maps produced after the initial development to grab some cash. It, I don't know, it just drives me nuts thinking about content sitting on a cartridge or CD that I'll never see or experience. I paid for the cartridge, so why do I need to plunk down cash for another game or place a personal ad to find someone with a GBA and a copy of Boktai. And trading over a link cable just doesn't cut it. It's such a cold process devoid of any rewarding satisfaction. There is no trial process to weed out the unworthy. you just hook up and wait for the download to begin. Boktai never gave me a reward without having me prove myself worthy of it. So, why completely change the game's philosophy for 4 emblems.

Rox, FF5 was my favourite. Really enjoyed the job system. 6 is on my todo list, though. I figure I'll finally get around to it in another year or two.

Exactly.

About the FF series, the only reason I want to play FF7 is to just see what's so hyped up about it. Mainly, I just wanna know the story. The BS for FFtype RPGs sucks, except for Chrono Trigger. In that respect, I am in complete agreement with BIW. I love Realtime games, especially ones with good, nonlinear stories, or at least sidequests. My favorite games of these type are Terranigma, Beyond Oasis, and Soul Blazer...or Soul Blade...Soul- something for the SNES. When it comes to RPGs in general, the Mario RPGs beat everything else into the dust...'specially Superstar Saga.

Alright, I'll step up to the plate and counter you BIW!

The LotR games are too short and feel as though they're lacking content. Definitely rentals. Later, they came out with a (active-turn?) turn based RPG LotR which seemed inspired by Final Fantasy or other MMORPG's where you played a generic person in the LotR world.

Also, there's not a lot of turn based games that have come out lately as far as RPG's, unless you're referring to the FF Chronicles or other re-releases of pre FF7 games. And even then, they were active-turn (AT) based games. Even Final Fantasy X/X-2 are using a turn system not far off from what was in Final Fantasy 4 (FF4 RULES, they should do a high quality remake), where units have different speeds at which they take another turn, but the enemies will still attack you if you don't press any buttons and idle.

Magic:TG is a great card game, has had dubious video game renditions. Unfortunately, as much as I love that card game, I have to dismiss it: You need skill, but you need cards first, and success favors the person who has money to stay with it. It loses its charm.

Pokemon put out so many games, but they weren't all that different from one another. With Pokemon Red and Blue, and all the other colors/materials they were named under, it's yet another profiteering/marketing ploy. Still, their gameplay for the portables is solid, but not as cool as the Dragon Warrior Monsters games, IMO.

Final Fantasy Tactics is one of the most impressive and tight turn based games ever made, so I have to argue against your point. I don't see turn based as something bad. The appeal to strictly turn based games like FFT is in your ability to anticipate and balance your team inbetween battles. Strategy and customization are fun. Even then, the turn's aren't static. Units take turns based on their speed rating also. Yelling for speed!!!!

I'm not a big sports game fan either, but the Madden football stuff is usually fun. My secret love is racing games. I like Gran Turismo and Burnout: each of them do things differently, but they're both great. Gran Turismo isn't 'ruined' because it's not violently crashing and exploding the vehicles. And Burnout isn't 'ruined' because it doesn't try to create an overly simulated/realistic driving experience. And for that matter, there's some other game that's rated better than Gran Turismo in terms of realism, since GT is more about giving you the experience that you think feels right, rather than a more realistic feel. I'd be happy if they brought back the Destruction Derby franchise... Twisted Metal is kind of bleh. Road Rash on the Sega Genesis was fun!

Final Fantasy 7 was fun. It had so much content and the materia system was a nice surprise.

Final Fantasy 8... two words: Triple Triad. I didn't care much for this one. The characters weren't outright repulsive yet.

Then they kept alternating chibi and normal sized characters... and the outfits were more and more gaudy. Square made me hate the main FF series.  :-\  My brother still plays them.. he sort of picked up where I left off...

place a personal ad to find someone with a GBA and a copy of Boktai.

You know it feels great to know I'm not the only one to do something similar to that.

Pep most turn based games basically go to the person with the better cards/characters that’s just the way it is.  In most cases no amount of skill or strategy can beat some tuity fruity rich kid that has the best characters and has a slightly above average skill level.  Your like those people who say there’s a strategy to baseball.  WTF game are you watching!

Thank god I'm not the only one who doesn't love FF, last forum I accidentally started a flame war that got me almost banned.

LOL.. there is strategy in baseball, but just like magic, the 'better' team is often the one with the money to grab the best players, so it's not exactly fair or exciting. Then come price caps, trying to regulate it all. If baseball was left unfettered, I think things would be more interesting. Extremely unbalanced teams going at it... you can cheer for the underdog! Anyways, I don't really like baseball that much.

Is white always going to beat black at chess? Is there a determinable edge? Everyone starts as equals in most games, though turn order can bias ones chances right off... so I can agree in part, but turn based games are not exclusively vulnerable to the rich kid element as you seem to suggest. Or is it just that you don't like turn based games for some other reason?

I have a grudge against MMORPG's in the same way that the rich kid element comes into play. But it's also clearly the fault of the designers. Many games out there have subscriptions, and you must keep your subscription paid to keep your account alive, and the more you play, typically the greater an edge you have over new players. It's a deviously good business model, but it isn't always fair, and I think it comes at the price of strategy gameplay.

I'm not saying MMORPG's can't be good, or have strategic elements. If they weren't good, people wouldnt play them. They have to be a little bit more than online chat tool! Any multiplayer online game will allow for inherent strategy and disparity because no two players are exactly alike. But, there are faults or bugs in games that allow opportunistic players to take advantage of the game in ways the creators didn't foresee. When a game has more unintentional strategic opportunities than intentional in-game strategic opportunities, the game is more susceptible to cheating.

The most simple and direct solution for eliminating crowding and a lack of diversity which comes from narrow play choices in games is simulation. And I am a big fan of simulation. When a game developer tries to balance races and classes, they're doing a disservice to the simulated environment. When a game is developed to allow for opportunities inside the play environment, gameplay can be much more rewarding. FPS games are highly Sim-oriented, but they're simple enough that character balancing is acceptable.

FFTA was good, but short.

While there's nothing wrong with a good turn based game, (My fav. ever was Bahamut Lagoon along with some other TBS-types.) I often find them too slow paced or, as stated above, too chancey. I prefer games where the outcome is entirely left to skill, reflex, and knowing ones enemy. Like chess.

Ah.. yeah. When you get a bunch of people together in an interactive environment, if one person is sitting there going 'umm.. what should my next move be....', that is a bummer for people who like fast reflex games. It's good to list unit turn order so you're getting some anticipation if you do multiplayer turn based game. It would be nice to have a time limit for taking action, so you push people to act or step to the next spot in line. If you're just a single person in a game, chance and risk can be too great. Being on a team, or controlling a team in a turn based environment can be helpful.

BTW, you guys, have your fun but don't break the board :)

Are there any realtime board games? I wonder how that'd work...

...Nah, that'd be to chaotic with everyone reaching over the board at the same dime and all.

I've never heard of an RTS like FFTA or Fire Emblem; they're all like Warcraft or AOE. It'd be cool if you only had a limited number of units to begin with, each with its own skills, in an RTS. No creating new units or anything.

Hey, has anyone here played Savage? The concept interests me, but my computer would die if I tried playing it.

Warlords Battle Cry 2 is a RTS and a RPG mix sorta.  You have one main unit who levels up and gains skill points and learns new spells.  Yet you also have control over hundreds of other units and you build and thrive.

Only played a couple RTS -command & conquer, warcraft- but both had missions exactly like this where you had a set number of units nad thus you had to rely on the unique advantages of each to beat the mission. They're interesting as a change of pace, but can become quite a bit restrictive as they lack the number of strategies that being able to create troops brings. Like for instance you'll always be forced to use long range fighters as scouts, otherwise your short rangers will get killed off too early.

Warlords sounds eactly like the hero characters system used in Warcraft 3

you'd only be controllign one unit though.

look into mods or hero only maps for any warcraft?

I think it would be fun to have a more customized Command and Conquer. My brother's gone so far as to suggest a RTS like command and conquer where you deal with a zombie virus outbreak, or you could be a dark organization that is trying to use the virus and do some kind of 'zombie herding': Command and Conquer: Biohazard! heh... I would like one that's more RISK like, with research paths and dealing with mass production of units. Would be fun if we could all do some sprites for it and build such a game.

One of these days I will replay it again and beat hell.

Theres a solar sensor on the DS? Or am I reading that wrong, what other neat little tricks does the DS hold?

it's for the GBA, though I suspect a DS version is on the way. And the solar sensor is built into the cartridge. Check out this pic to get an idea of what it would look like: http://www.success-hk.com/sc_html/gba/2_GBA%20SP%20Boktai%20Limited.htm
You can see how the cartridge sticks out a bit like an old GB/GBC cart would.

Honestly I’m not sure if I have or not... some one gave me these pills that looked like Tylenol.  All I remember from that night was watching that part of the movie then sleeping... lots of sleeping, and according to other people that were there I did a lot more than sleep, they also said this kid didn’t have a tv...  Then I took some Tylenol when I woke up... the real stuff, because my head felt like it sat in the fire all night... and then walked home.
Also I had to say that to not get busted with 5 or 6 posts saying I sung it wrong
I've edited my previous post to be more politically correct.

Where’s the I forgot to put a sock on my right foot today mood?
Rox I told em my head hurt so he came down with the Tylenol bottle and gave me two red pills.  I thought nothing of it because my headache went away until I woke up and took some more.

YE Haw I found it!  Plus the constipated emote.
