[WIP] SHMUP Title Screen

Heya,

started working on the title screen for my "mobile game" today. Been working 5 hours on it now so my eyes itch and Iīm getting tired so Iīm posting it here as WIP so that I donīt do any big mistakes! Hoping there will be some comments to work on here by tomorrow when I wake up ;]

Wow this is looking great! Good anatomy! Issues I see:

- palette could maybe use some hue-shift
- his head's shading is weird, looking like he has a gigantic scar
- I don't know exactly what, but HIS left shoulder muscles seema little bit weird
- The body seems to shrink inside the singlet, mainly on THE left side, its like theres a section of his body has been scooped away.
- Maybe a little bit more contrast, esp on the singlet

Hey, this looks really great  :) Maybe the bottom of the gun could show more perspective at the angle he is holding it.

en~~I look your picture...I think...You need study anthropotomy again,and you should play any game of "SNK"~~becaue they can protract very cool anthropotomy by the pixel~~

Thanks for help all! I tried to correct everything as good as I could. I hope I improved it some! Still donīt know exactly how the body or arm will end...

Thanks for the site zhangyue27334, very nice! I will try to work more on the anatomy every chance I get, I have drawn women almost exclusively so not too used to drawing men  :-[

It would look really neat if you could have some type of thing goin on behind him.. Maybe some barrels of oil, or fire or something. Or a military outpost or something.. I like it :)

Just playing around with it, taking it a bit further.

I think you should angle the gun upwards a bit.

Thanks for the edit! Though he is looking too buffed for my liking, like a bodybuilder like Ronnie Coleman rather than a well trained agile military guy. Also his biceps and triceps looks like they are contracted too much. Like in his right arm holding the gun upwards, that biceps gives the look of someone thatīs holding his arm with the fingers rotated to the face. The biceps looks different depending on how you rotate your hand(supinated to pronated) so mine is not supposed to be fully contracted on either arm. Also because of the position the triceps will be somewhat relaxed. Trapezius seem a bit too long too. You point out many flaws I will take care of though, thanks! :]

I had a new picture too, I had problem with it showing yesterday so maybe no one can see it, uploaded it again...



I will try and make some background for it :]

Yes, that edit wasn't exaclty serious, just throwing hyper huge "soldinator" idea out there, going crazy with it :).

However, the gun part was serious. Your version is botheringly out of perspective - probably due to the part showing near the barrel. And i'd still angle the "body" of the gun upwards, while keeping the handle in the same position you have.

I'd tilt the head a pixel back. Maybe straighten it upwards a bit (as in "straightening his back, and the neck").

Also, i prefer the version with just one gun. The lower hand holding the gun doesn't convey enough MANLINESS, it's kind of soft. Lock his wrist, align the hand it with the arm, and pump the lower arm muscles!!! Or replace the lower machine gun with an army knife, the blade pointing downwards! (ready to KILL KILL KILL - even if there's no knife in-game)

The game is looking great, good luck with it :)

Thanks for all the comments Turbo, I thought about it all while I continued to work on it. Got much better with your help! Though the guns have to stay, cause in the game he is supposed to run around with 2 guns and I would like to reflect that in the title screen :] I think I fixed much about the perspective on the gun though, I had forgot to add lots to the hand there regarding perspective in the first place.

Here's an early pic of the main char, havenīt worked much on it yet, he even has hair here, hehe:

Got an update now, with some background!

I made an explosion to put in the background. Can barely see it behind him though :[

At the moment the new head looks to me like an ugly baby or something. Maybe you should give him a bigger chin.

Based on the new side view of the gun, that's how I think the one in his right hand should look more like.

Also, while editing, I saw that there's a dark, near-black color that you could just get rid off under the gun (I didn't though  :lol:).

It looks good; I'm no anatomy expert, so I can't help much there.  His head almost looks flat now, I personally like the first one version of his head better.

Other than that, I'd say it'll make an excellent titlescreen.  :y: Good job.

It's EDITZ TIME!



(added the hair just because, lolz, you said he was going to have it, you know. :>)

I played around with the colours (omg, the colour ramp slides from blueish (shadow) to yellowish (highlights) it's like so ORIGINAL SOMEHOW JAD. It works, though, almost always.) and made him more leather-y coloured. I also added some OMG DRAMTIC ambient lighting (lightning!) to both him and the title that I think came out well. It's badly AA:ed in some places but the general effect works, I think. Just a suggestion to add more DRAMA! :D

But please play with colours and contrast, it makes pictures so much more fun :] And use Graphics Gale if you want to do that too, because it makes playing around with colour ramps so much more fun and easy, heh :]]

Here's my messy edit. Not sure it shows you much but basically wanted to see what it would look like with a different head. Changed the explosion to a burning city though maybe a burning oil pipeline might be more appropriate. Just thought that a big white
explosion might get in the way of menu options.

Whoa sharprm! Thatīs truly nice! You have convinced me to remove that boring explosion I made! Looks very nice! And since you both has drawn hair I guess I will have put hair on him too since it looks so awesome!

Do big explosions look like that? I mean, surely as they're the actual light source you wouldn't see much shading on them until the initial blast was cooling down and becoming more smokey?

Okidoki, got a pretty big update now!



I hesitated to use a city since you used that sharprm but anything else just didnīt cut it. Added a heli too for more action. Also changed the guys colours to represent the environment a bit better, and added hair if anyone missed it! ;]

I don't think the new skin colors look that good. Maybe make the third lightest skin color more greyish. The helicopter
is a nice addition.

Changed the explosion into a burning fire instead, looked too "cartoonish" I think.

This looks great. I'm quite obsessed with topdown military-shooters, so I've enjoyed seeing the progress you've made. I prefer the earlier logo with the I's and O's looking like cartridges though. It was a very neat and tacky idea, just perfect for this type of game!  ;D

I'd also like to see the guy there sporting some sort of combat-vest. A simple tank-top doesn't exactly convey the "badass motherfucker" image that usually goes with bald guys waving a pair of submachine guns. Arnold Schwarzenegger is a fine inspiration for things like this, as seen here and here.

His expressiion is too soft. Not enough rage/adrenaline/stress. He looks so... casual.
The helicopter kind of looks like an afterthought. The propellors have no sense of motion (unless they would be animated in the game)
It looks more like a TV copter than a war one, which I think would be more fitting for this image.
Something like an Apache maybe.
Aside from that, this is turning out nicely.
The shirt could use more contrast.
