Fan project beginner sprites

on: March 13, 2018, 11:23:49 am

Most hairs are made by someone else.
The base sprite is the Breeze Revolution base sprite.

Was hoping to get some feedback and some tips on what to do to improve my hair spriting abilities!

Say it with me, kids: Don't Use Bases!

These characters are scarcely recognizable here in some cases because of your reliance on the base. Why is mr popo an anime baby? Why is the cat god dude shorter than Kame? Why does the dragon have an anime baby body??

Try to poke at the things to make them fit more with the character anatomy!

Hey thanks for the feedback!

I agree with you that some bodies need some work.

I am mostly using the base because all of these are outfits that the player can wear as well.

The dragon is just a helmet actually! :)

Im going to look into different body shapes!

Wait what is wrong with Sprite Bases? Of course there is something that could be said about strict adherence to a sprite base and certain character may require the base to be tweaked or changed entirely but is there really anything wrong with using a sprite base to get a uniform look to the character sprites especially if you plan to have a customizable main character?

Or is this more a criticism along the lines of "don't use sprite bases you did not create yourself"?

I think MM meant the latter. It's good to make your own bases (as long as you remember to tweak them for different characters, as you said), but using someone else's bases is just depriving yourself of learning (which in turn leads to speed and flexibility), and depriving your project of a unique look.

Yeah, pretty much what Eishiya said. Use yet own work wherever possible!
