AS FOR THE SMILEYS: looking pretty good! Play with the bounciness more, like for the crying a good effect might be a sort of blubbering bounce to emphasize the sobbing!
Or perhaps a more sudden "bouncing" question mark rather than the slow draw-in.
Remember, with animation timing and the "beat" of an animation can sometimes be EVERYTHING, especially for emotive things like this.
