[Feedback] Pixel Art Dog

on: January 13, 2018, 08:52:14 pm
Hi there. This is my first time posting so I hope that I am doing this right...

The name's Critter. I am working on a mobile game about my sister's dogs. This is something I'm doing for more experience in game making and the art is of course gonna be pixel art.

This is one of my sister's dogs in pixel form that I would like some feedback on. I would prefer to not have an outline if I can avoid it. I made the black fur slightly less than pure black so that the tail could be pure black, but looking at the preview of this post, it's actually kinda hard to tell.

My main concern is if it's best to keep the shading simple or if I should add more shading to make the dog's fur or snout stand out more. I suppose keeping it simple would be best since I am a beginner at pixel art and I haven't fully grasped the concept of shading quite yet...

Anyway, what do you all think?

Note: The canvas is 64 x 64 but actual colored pixels are 30 x 39. I'll need extra room for when I start doing animation for the dogs anyway.

Thank you :)

The top part of the dog looks great. There is a slight anatomy error on the bottom half probably due to the image limits. I would suggest pushing the feet closer together. Also a tail wouldnt be visible since the head would cover it up irl.

Thanks for the reply TEETH! I can see why the bottom looked so wrong now. I was also worried that a black outline on a mostly black character wouldn't work right but it actually doesn't look bad at all. Here's my newest rendition: I made the body smaller than your version but I tried keep it close so the anatomy lines up better. And looking at some reference pictures, only the tips of her paws are white so I just used one pixel for those.
