[Feedback] Human anatomy + Wood texture

on: January 09, 2018, 10:10:37 pm
Hey all. Today I've started creating a forest spirit nymph thing. I haven't gathered the courage to do her feet yet, it's a work in progress.

I would like advice on two things: her anatomy (is there anything wrong with her body and/or her position ?), and opinions on the wood bark texture on her torso.

Thanks :)

Hi Zanorin, i am no expert but here is my opinion.

Her proportions/Anatomy looks fine to me just her bottom could be little bit smaller(Unless you wanted to have it this way.)

I think picking darker shades for wood would make it look better.

Overall she is lovely, i like it! :)

Some notes:

-Break your habit of hiding the hands. The more you draw them the less of a pain in the rear end they become.
-Draw at least two skeletons from reference, every individual bone. It is HARD and can be a bit of a mind-screw thinking in that much detail, but the immediate trade-off is that you'll much better understand proportion and anatomical structure, which translates to what for me at least was an immediate boost in drawing ability.
-Skulls.
-Draw skulls. Facial structure is so much easier when you know how a skull works.
-Draw some damn skulls.

Some other minor things you may want to look into:
-subpixeling, or the art of using slightly different color shades to create the impression of details you can't actually fit into a picture
-"Jaggies", or misplaced pixels that affect the curvature/lines and create a janky look in pixelart. Notably your hair and arms have a few of these, but they're prevalent in a lot of pixel-work from beginners

Thank you both for your feedback !

Jedemy, I integrated your comments in my new version :y:

I plan on doing roots instead of her feet (it looks terrible because it's a placeholder - WIP). I also more or less fixed the "jaggy" pixels, and I realized her arms were TERRIBLY short how could I not see it before ?

You got me there ! Thing is my hands look terrible as you can see :'(

You got an example ?

I'll try drawing skeletons and skulls as soon as I can get hold of some paper and a pencil... I'd like to know though, what's wrong with her face ? The more I look at everything else, the more I want to hang myself, but her face is pretty much the only part that I find nothing wrong with .-.

EDIT : I gave her some antlers, thought I'd share :)

mostly small details like the jawline or a lack of volume, things that youll start picking up on the more you get into anatomy.

as for subpixeling, check the site glossary, its at the top. the one what with all dem diagrams and sciency such and so!

If you have time, could you perhaps make an edit of the face so I see what you mean ? :)

It's weird, I didn't find subpixeling in the glossary.

I can't find a description either. Sub pixelling is whenever you draw pixels in intermediate (mixed) colors because the detail you want to represent shouldn't occupy an entire pixel - so you select a color which is a blend of the colors of the participating elements.

For example :
Quote
███ 3-pixel line

████ 4-pixel line

Now using mix of black and the forum's background, to represent half-pixels:

███ 3.5-pixel line

███ 4-pixel line, shifted 0.5 pixel to the right

I've already seen this tutorial, I had understood what subpixel animation was, but I couldn't quite see what it was without the animation part. :)

Thank you yrizoud that was really helpful :D

Pretty good improvements. Quick pet peeve though most people get wrong is that boobs go down, not to the side.

Good luck!
