Tree Leaves Shading and Highlights [Feedback Wanted]

on: January 09, 2018, 10:00:57 pm
Hello everyone, I'd like some feedback on a tree I'm working on.
The lighting is top-right and the view is from a top-down RPG style.
So far i got the top of the tree done but I am not sure about the shading. I would appreciate any tips on how I would be able to make it look better.

Thanks for taking the time to check this post!

[EDIT]

This is the edit from my reply post.

the division between the layers of leaves is so sharp it gives everything an unnatural spherical look. break up those color lines some, make the transition to the darker bits more disorderly!

It's quite hard to tell without seeing the rest of your game (like the floor, the tree will be placed on).
Personally, I would try to draw bigger leaves in order to avoid too much chunks and prevent the dithering (but that depends on your preferences). In my opinion, you could try adding a colder color (blue) to the shadow. That should fit to the ground as well, which is hard to tell without seeing the rest.
All in all I like the texture.

Hey Guys, thanks for the suggestions. I have updated the sprites per your suggestion @MysteryMeat.
The change is subtle but i tried to get rid of the circular shading and also changes the darkest shade at the top to match the mid tone dark. Also added the trunk and some shadows.

@Lukaslrzl
I have quickly mocked up what the tree would look like on my grass texture.

I'll add these edits to the main post as well.

P.S Now that i look at it against the grass, it kind of looks a little too "busy". I think i will try the suggestion to make the leaves a little bigger... what do you guys think?

Hi,
Actually, the leaves fit the grass texture well.
If the grass will look like this, personally, I would not change too much regarding the leaves. Great work!

Btw: if you remove a few pixels from the bottom of the trunk, it looks like the grass is growing in front of the trunk. I use this little trick pretty often, as it gives the whole thing more life. Additionally, you are not bound to the color of the grass :)
But that's off topic  ;)

still too circular, but now its just the edges. add some rough leafy jags on the edges of the thing, too smooth!

lighten the upper pixel color to give more to the illusion of depth and light
quick edit:

also darkening the shadow on the base of the trunk might help too
