You might be conflicted, but pick the option that best matches how you feel about edits.

editing.. I think its an acceptable way of learning, but there are of course better ways that don't let you get comfortable with mediocre sprites.
now, I really don't like edits and regret a lot of mine, especially with tags telling people they cant use it without my permission lol.. I think edits are fine as long as they're not used in any.. self promoting way, such as whats going on in the commercial critique challenge thread.

I know the edit communities focus on commercial sprites, but once someone creates some templates, those too may get redistributed. Visual chat also is known to have an edit and doll following. So I mean all editing, commercial or not.

I never editted any sprite except for teaching someone something, it could be a way for a beginner to start out in pixel art or spriting (pixel art's baby brother, imo). It gets dirty when the person gives the impression that the sprite is his.
Megaman edits in edit forums come to mind.

What i don't like is people who submit edits on Pixeljoint and don't understand why they're not approved. It's fine if you edit things to learn on your own comp, but i don't think it's right to show them in your gallery - use the skills you've developed from editing to make an original piece, i say.

Editing to crit someone else's work is fine, cus you're helping them, and although people will be able to see your skill from it, they're not decieved into thinking it's all your work.

Hmm..

Mhh, I picked 'for learning purposes only', but I am actually rather undecided. Most of the time I make and enjoy fun edits, more communication for communication's sake than anything else.

As with most the people, I agree that edits should be done with learning purposes only.

Having been a member at a megaman forum at one point and seeing that community first hand, I have to say that I am against editing if presented as "your own work". Though good for learning detail work and such, it is essentially feeding off someone else's creativity and labour. Making things from scratch is a requirement if you are to make progress.
