Help with... Proportions I guess? (Critique/Feedback)

on: December 08, 2017, 09:20:54 pm
Topic related to this one:

https://pixelation.org/index.php?topic=24158.0

Need feedback with the following characters:

*The first one is the same as in the link above but with hair
*The second one is like the "female version", i'm not very familiar with female figure so I need feedback on this one before continuing
*The third... well, I know it sucks... but I donīt know why... like maybe the proportions are wrong or simply the arms are poorly drawn... this is the one I need the most help with

Once again, if you donīt have a lot to say then a simple "It's ok", "I donīt quite like it" or something like that is going to be very helpful :) THANKS

EDIT: It looks like the link for the image expired, so this is the latest version of the piece XD

Well I just started so take everything I say with a grain of salt.

The two things that stand out to me are I'm not sure what is going on with the third guy's design on his shirt. My brain wants it to follow the contours of his body more.

And the first two it seems like their hair is a bit too tall for the angle it seems like we're looking at them at. But I think the third guy looks right.

Love the sock texture though.

First one is great

Second one is good, it looks like an athletic female.  Might need a touch of tweaking, it's a bit androgynous. Maybe lightening the bangs to look less like eyebrows might do the trick.  Or a mouth to help differentiate.

Third one, it's the body language that is off.  If he's going to tackle you, add some knee bend and a bit of leaning forward.  If it's more of a c'mon pose, or grappling, maybe the palms should be faced up or sideways, not down. The arms could also be at slightly different height to make it more natural of a pose.

It depends on what is going on.  The design of the sprites themselves are all fine, depends on the context.   If the context is more like an athletic ready stance, then the third's arms won't be out like that, would be more like the other two.

I think you're just getting a bit burned by the mirror tool.

Generally, nice work.

Hmmm... I think I kind of get it...

It is supposed to be an idle pose but I canīt find the right position for them. Are the length and width of the arms alright?

*Changed the Girl's hair (not that th other hair will go unused, actually the fact that she seems androgine is an advantage because I can make a male character with that body without anyone noticing XD)

*The Jock arms were enteirley redrawn, I will follow a more cartoony style, the design of the shirt was changed (the design was actually a sleeveless rugby shirt, but I think it doesnīt translate very well in pixel art

*Added another character

Does them look beter or worse? ._.

Honestly this isn't a style that works without mouths on, they look kinda gremliny. Add mouths, try to make that work with the style.
you can do a lot for personality with that, play around with options.

Whaddabou this?

"Concept Art" Sprites to test... ummm... personality? well... it was my idea all the time that the characters had mouthes but only that shows when necessary, anyway I added it and loks better, I will make more "concepts" on the other characters

Aye, for sure. Just remember to refine them in the final versions!

The problem with the original was it was just setting off a bit of the uncanney valley. Most of developing new art styles seems to just be managing that sometimes, haha
