[WIP] - Feedback needed for a pixel tree

on: November 18, 2017, 03:43:10 pm

First of all, if it's top down you wouldn't see so much of the trunk.
As for the foliage, try to suggest leaves more, at this resolution you can do much more than just general fuzzy round shapes.

As Hunited suggested- The angle in which you created this tree isn't Top-down.
Currently it feels like a 2D Sidescroller Tree with a slight drop-shadow  ;D

From a top-down view, you would only be able to see the foliage, since it's from directly above. Take this as an example:

Alternatively, theres the more popular 3/4 View, which is in my opinion a more appealing perspective. A tree in this perspective, you would be able to see both the Foliage, and a limited amount of the tree trunk itself. Take Zelda as an example:

Hopefully this helped  :)

I really appreciate your comments  :) - I am aiming for 3/4 perspective, so I can see that my tree trunk is way too big. But I wanted a tall tree (the tallest tree in my town). Right now the tree is 384 pixels high and my characters are 64 pixels high. So I can see now, that I've made it too tall.

As for Hunited's comment "As for the foliage, try to suggest leaves more", I'm now sure what you mean? You want me to add more leaves, more detailed or ?

(English is not my native tongue, so maybe I just dont understand the meaning)

A tall tree would have plenty of trunk visible even in 3/4 view, but the trunk would be foreshortened and the curvature of it would be apparent. The roots would form an arc rather than a straight line along the ground, horizontal features such as cracks in the bark would form arcs, etc.

As for leaves, I think it needs a bit more detail, yes. You don't need to draw individual leaves, but more indication of leafy-shapes rather than vague blobs would be good. In addition, at this size, the fact that the tree has many branches and isn't a leafy lollipop should be apparent - try to suggest gaps in the tree with shadows and highlights instead of shading the whole thing like it's a sphere.

Good ideas, thank you so much!  ;D

Right now I have this (I've shortened the trunk)

But I hear you, I need to work more on the detail of the tree, blend more shadow in it, and maybe reveal a branch as well.
