Ice Tileset

on: November 17, 2017, 12:44:59 pm
Here is an ice tile set I made.
I'm planning to animate the water later.

My problem is that I can't come up with a good design for the lower part of the ice tile (I just filled it with one color for the pic).
Is there any kind of techniques for creating such tiles?

Also other critique about the tiles and color choices are also welcome!
thanks! :)

Ice is translucent, so the sides aren't substantially darker than the top. Look up "large ice block" for some good ref images. Alternatively, if these aren't meant to be slippery ice blocks, consider making them more like icebergs (which have a solid white, compacted-snow look), and use those as ref.

Thanks for the advice eishiya, really helped!

I didn't even think about my mistake.
I made a design for the lower part but I'm not sure about the colors.

Any suggestions anyone?
Thanks :)

The top edges have some bits that stick out, so the vertical edges are probably not smooth surfaces, unlike the tops. Why not depict those imperfections? The diagonal lines make them look completely smooth.

you're right.
I have tried it a few times already but I haven't had any luck.
I'm not sure how to achieve that kind of effect.
any tips?

How about something like this? I put shadows to the right of the bits that stick out, and then added some smaller shadows to the left and right of the parts that stick out on the bottom, to make those look like they're sticking out.

You got some very similar colours used on the texture of the ice(the lines). It makes it all look very blurry and kind of like jpg compression, especially coupled with the random water texture on the sides. I'd suggest increasing the contrast of those colours or removing the similar colours.
