Retronator Pixel Art News

on: September 02, 2017, 10:57:50 am
I guess this is officially a series now, as I just released the second part of my YouTube show Retronator Pixel Art News.

There's a news item about Pixelation at the end as well. I hope you enjoy it!

Had fun watching this <3 Found some new games to ogle at thanks to you!
I can't seem to find links to all the games in your news feed though. It'd be handy if you included all the links in order in the description of each video, though I realize that's a lot of work and understand if you don't want to do it xP

Couple of crits because what's an eishiya post without those 8]

Could you please take a longer pause between sentences? You barely pause at all, so things flow together and make it really intimidating to listen to you, it's a bit overwhelming even for a native-level speaker. It'll also give more cutting room for edits and make it easier to sync game/art visuals to the audio xP

Similarly, when you splice things together later, leave a bit of a break. In a lot of the cuts you have, the video on-screen is images and games rather than your face, so you don't need to worry about video-sync and can just leave some audio silence even if your video has no breaks between sentences. When you're going between different topics in your games segment, the lack of pause makes it difficult to realize you've changed topics, so it's easy to accidentally process the first several words of each segment as part of the previous one, which can lead to misunderstandings or just a sense of confusion.

Thanks for the feedback, this is very productive!

Yeah, some of the games I haven't written on the blog yet, so they don't appear in the Flipboard magazine. They'll get there as I write the posts … I should just link to their steam/webpages in the mean time, which is a good idea.

Pauses … I take pauses, but cut them all out. It's all also sped up 120% as I find that keeps me from being bored out watching. Too fast perhaps? Might try 110% next.

I agree I should be more generous with editing, but it's all a tradeoff with how much content I get in (I don't want to go much above 15 minutes). My first cut was 31 minutes (which is on my Patreon), so I had to work hard to distill it down to the current 16 minutes, and I shaved off everything—quite correctly a bit too much. If I had time for a weekly 10 min show that would be easier, but alas. I completely agree I should at least pad the news item edges. I feel silly I didn't realize I should do fade-to-blacks in between sections, which is perfect for that 1s pause.

Also, there will be extended sections coming out, especially the full 11 minute new releases section with many more games. I'll post it here, but for some shorter things, they'll just go up on my Facebook page in case you want to follow there.

Steam links would be great in addition, since they can be in order and immediately relevant to what someone's looking for. I, for one, often pause videos like that to check out the link to learn more about the game/project/whatever before I continue with the rest of the video.

If you're beyond 5-ish minutes anyway, I think letting your videos run beyond 15 minutes is fine, since at that point you're dealing with the "long-form" audience anyway. If you split the videos into distinct sections and provide time codes in the description, you can even get some of the short-form audiences onboard.
Youtube has settings for playing videos faster for those who do get bored - though I didn't notice your speed-up, so I guess that's not a problem. Pauses are relative anyway - a .1 second pause in fast speech has a lot more impact than the same pause does in slow speech.

September edition is out, now with steam links, more pauses between segments, and 10% slower talking. :) Thanks for the feedback last time!

Also, if you want to support the show, you can get the Extended Edition with 10min bonus content as a reward on Patreon. It's by no means necessary—the extended games section will also come out for free, like it did in August:

I hope you enjoy it!

I didn't realize I counted as multiple "some people" who mentioned your fast speech, heheh. I didn't notice any parts where I struggled to understand you this time :D

I enjoyed the pixel comics section, I hope you'll do that again some time in a few months. I nominate A Letter for Eko for a mention then, I think it's as worthy as the others, but sadly under-promoted.

That's because you weren't the only one. ;D

Thanks for the recommendation, I'll put it on my to-do list so I at least mention it on the blog at one point. (My to-do list is growing faster than I'm clearing things off, so I might need to consider posting 2x a day soon.)
