Takin' out the trash

on: November 05, 2006, 02:02:25 am
So, I was just browsing the boards a few days ago, and I noticed that someone had a pretty crappy avatar. I did a quick edit to see if I could help him out some...

Please critique heavily, I'll only cry a little.

New:

Old:

(Once again, I apologize for rehashing something old, I do have new stuff coming, so fret not! I just felt this issue needed to be addressed.)

Well what can I say? This was one of my favourite pieces of art posted ever on pixelation since waay back (I must have asked you to return it as your avatar like two times over the years) and I think you went and made it even more awesome. Much sharper, much more detailed, much more stark and foreboding. The animation quality was excellent then, it's excellent now. I love this. I wish I could pay you money to make games of this art calibre, find you coders that will make whatever you ask of them and just enjoy the resultant bliss. I don't really have critique. It's animated far better than I could animate myself and the rendering is almost similarly to such a level where Helm doesn't have anything to add.

Congratulations on self-critiquing and self-bettering.

Im not long new here so I asumed that was pretty recent, as the animation is pretty awesome and the sprite design seems very solid.. Looks like I was wrong  ::)

Your new one really does show a massive improvement, I wouldn't be prepared for harsh critisism because I really think it's amazing. Im glad you've lit up his uniform more to reveal more detail, it really looks better than simply blacking out parts.

awesome.  ;D
I've not got anything interesting to type here..

wow

i have one critique, and it boils down to personal preference, but I think his head should be tilted toward the viewer a little - the dead-on side view doesn't work well with the new sprite.  A little rotation would go a LONG ways there!

I actually think the head should turn towards the other direction when the pistol is whipped out, as that torso rotation would mean the head is 90 degress or more turned on the right shoulder and that just doesn't work with the human body.

More detail in less space = Fantastic. Great update that gets rid of those large nebulous shadowy areas.

My one critique is the 1 pixel that sticks out on the leg when standing forward with the pistol. I'd add a pixel just above that. That's all I see at the moment.

Inspiring.  :y:

I'm basically going to hop on the ass kissing bandwagon here, but I do have one question. What's the deal with the smoke? I'd always wondered, but the opportunity to ask never seemed to present itself until now.

Wow, thanks for the comments so far! :) I turned the head away just a tiny bit when he's firing the pistol, it'll still take some tweaking. Also fixed the boot up when he steps forward.

As for the smoke, I don't really remember why I put it in originally, but I liked it, and later on decided he's probably smoking inside his helmet, it's just venting the smoke for him. I'm trying to figure out what exactly I should do with it, I might just get rid of it entirely. I'd think it'd be rather unwise to smoke inside a helmet like that.  :D

\/ That was another possibility I considered, though if that were the case, him breathing between every burst of gunfire would make the most sense.

I thought of it more like a release of breath, like he's in the cold and his breath is between his shots.
As supposed to cigarette smoke.

Lol wow...I was amazed at how awesome the old version was.  I about had a heart attack after this one.  Fantastic work here.  Is this a game?  If it is, or will be, good luck with it.  Amazing work here.

I always thought the smoke to the side was an exasperated sigh thing.  Like hes tried to kill it with the pistol, hasn't worked, switches to rifle, hasn't worked, so he goes and sighs in an exasperated fashion then he starts again.
Back from hiatus, just remembered how excellent this community is at forming technique in a fledgeling artist of any kind.

I thought it was like some kind of exhaust, since he's in a gas mask and all. I like it.
When he's stepped forward, why does he lift his backest foot up before he steps back? I mean, it seems like he'd do it while he steps back, as opposed to before. Just a question, though.
Anywho, yeah, this rocks. I didn't know it could get any better than it already was, but it has.

Hahah, never thought of it as an exasperated sigh. I might just have to change it up a bit so that's obviously what's happening.

As for the back foot lifting before he turns, I found that when I moved the way he is, I subconsciously shifted my weight off the back foot and lifted my heel slightly so it spun easier before I actually started to turn.

Man Pawige, i honestly didn't think that could get much better. It's easily one of the favourite pixel animations i've seen, and a great inspiration to me. Now it's even better :P The extra detail is a fine treat for the eyes. The only thing that seems odd to me would be when he fires his handgun, his head and/or neck looks rather small, i realise this is because his shoulderpads are in the way, and it's probably just when looking in comparison to the old version.

Lalala great work.  :0'

Wow man.
So much detail in an animation!
It wouldn't be that great if it was just a singe picture but animations are a whole 'nother cup of tea.

I kept searching but couldn't find any flaws. I already knew the old one and found it amazing but the new version is simply stunning!
Great job!
Does scaling an image blur it?

May just be me, but I find that the colours of the old one feel like they have more volume.

This is also one of my favourite animations. I would love it if you posted some pictures showing your techniques for animating with so much detail.

Ok, normally I won't post something like this, but this one just screams for it! Pawige, that's just so awesome, like the rest said, the old was already delicious, but the new is real eye-candy! :o, I like the way how it looks (more) realistic now

He looks less bulky, therefore looks more like infantry, built for speed, y'know?
I've always spent a few minutes just staring at the old one. This looks more refreshing, idk why.
Kudos on a good job done.

Nice... the proportions and style are much improved. The animation is just so 'right' I can't actually think of anything to bit..er crit about. Well, the new one seems a tad bit jagged, but that in itself is a style-issue (and that 'jagged-feel' helps contrast the image) so its probably not worth altering.

This is a masterpiece.  If you're not making game art and being paid very well to do it, you should be.

Pawige, I'm not sure if I ever told you this, but this piece of yours was one of the most major influences on me getting into pixelart.  ...and still is - especially with the new version.  Gosh dang amazing man.
