Need a Light?

on: November 01, 2006, 08:22:31 am
Happy Halloween, guys and girls, here's my first post. I'm Matt. Indigo told me about this place. Anyways, here's a fish offering you a light. Its just at the line art phase and I filled in a few colors just to show the general colors I'm thinking of using. Lemme know what you think and help me make the right moves from here. Thanks in advance. I hope to be on you guy's level someday!

Oh, and I sketched it first and scanned that as a starting point. Shame on me.

I scan in stuff all the time; nothing to be ashamed of.

... I think.

Anyway, this is some real solid line art you got there. Once we see some actual shading and pixel work we'll be able to pick the piece apart and give some pointers. I'd also highly recommend you check out the The Recorded Pixel Art Project if you want to see how a piece is made from scratch.

Good luck!

Ok, update. Basically I just did a lot of dithering and stuff. It looks good at 6x, but 1x not so much... Anyways, its a start. Ok, guys, tear me a new one!

Here, i had a shot at editting yours if its ok:

It needed textures, and of course a background but i'm sure you werent done the entire peice. As for the stroke, it's all up to the style of the artist. I personally like coloured strokes over no strokes or black outlines, but it's all up to you.

Pretty pretty...Looks nice, I like the original  more then the Edit above, the edit looks messy. Otherwise nice colors, concept of it is really good.

Egads, a complement! Actually, I really like the edit. Yes, I plan on continuing to work on it. Your version has helped me see some areas I need to focus on. I need to get that match to stand out and look like he's handing it to you. That will be best done with the background, right? Also, when you say stroke, do you mean outline? Oh, and those videos were a big help, too. Thanks for all the replies, guys! Also, I'll try to get a small gallery of my work on here to show those who care where I'm coming from.

Do the lips work? Also, I tried making a background... the dithering theme didn't work too well there. I really think I made him too big. I'll try to make my next picture a bit smaller. I'm not up to shadding something that large. He seems like he needs to have a cool texture or something, but that would take away his cartoonyness. Seriously, though, someone take that match before he hurts himself. Maybe I'm done, or maybe I'll just quit and work on something better.

I agree about adding some texture biggest thing about that though is the match, I think you should add a bit of a crosshatch on it so it gives it a grainy feel, same may work for the fish to give it a scaly look but it may mess with the cartoon style if overdone.

I think you need use more contrast with the colors, since you want it to look cartoony.

I did a very little edit with colors also i saw you had several extra colors that where making no difference, still, i think the pallete could be improved, but this is just a glimpse of what you could do for making it look better, also I would like  you to observe, what i did to the bubbles. you can see as well that i used purple to outline and shades since your background is blue.

Wow, thanks, Tisha! That looks great. I'll probably stop working on this. My friend wants me to make a Tamagotchi game featuring Dirk Nowitzki. Here's the begginings of his sprite. Really looks like him, I think. Again, I'm going to need to improve colors. Color selection is really a weak area for me. Also, his shoes need the outline taken away.
