Yoda's near the middle...

on: November 01, 2006, 07:14:46 am
I know it's a rehash of an old idea, and I apologize for that, but it was too much fun to stop. Been working on this on and off for the past long time.

90 colors, I really wasted a lot, but I don't really mind and I'm too lazy to go through the trouble of cutting it down.

Again, see how many you can recognize! Again, if anyone gets them all I will be totally amazed!

Correct guesses so far: (as of reply 44)
[Keen, Cop, Red Shirt, Lara, Lara, Chaplin, McDonald, Moe, Larry, Curly, Phantom, Ursula,
Kate Archer, Vader, Stormtrooper, Fett, Gaston, Homer, Ivy, Manny, Xan, Chuck Norris, Grinch,
Wilco, Threepwood, Mario, Link, The Beast, Legoman, Freeman, Master Chief, Spidey, Spawn, Osama,
Snow White, Robin Hood, Rincewind, Luggage, Merlin, Quasimodo, Esmeralda, Chun-Li, Bender, Shrek, Optimus, Kim Jong-Il,
Leeloo, Agent Scully, Purple and Green Tentacle, Jessica, Marvin, Yoda, My Avatar, No Face, Cosmo, Megaman, Moses,
Crab Zombie, Skeletor, Monroe, Gump, Terminator, Megaman X (Upgraded), Martian, Helsing, Duke, Elvis, Peach, Alyx,
Indy, Zealot, Dread Pirate Roberts, Mr. T, Twinsen, Leia, Hulk, Marvin, The Joker, Harley Quinn, Vrenna,
Jasmine, Raphael, Fife, Bloodrayne, Einstein, Depp Wonka, Mulan & Mushu, Lemming, Bride, Pillsbury Doughboy, Pink Panther, Mike,
Crusader, Jeannie, Robot from I Robot, Buzz, Hades, Samus, Necromancer, Kuzco, Holmes, Honest Abe, Jafar, Mask,
]
All done, nice work!

And an update, I mostly tried to address the leaning issue:

Thanks for the crits!

I'm gonna take a crack at it:
Commander Keen, a cop, some dude, Lara Croft, Lara Croft again, Charlie Chaplin, Ronald McDonald, Moe, Curly, Larry, Phantom of the Opera, Ursula, Star Wars rebel, Darth Vader, Stormtrooper, Boba Fett, Flash Gordon, Homer Simpson, Poison Ivy, Grim Fandango, ? dude, random cowboy, The Grinch, some dude, some chick, Mario?, Link, Beastman?, lego guy, Gordon Freeman, Halo Guy, Spidey, Spawn, Terrorist, Snow White, Robin Hood, A wizard, treasure chest, Gandalf, Hunchback of Notre Dame, that chick from Notre Dame, street fighter chick, Bender, Shrek, Optimus Prime, Hilter, ?, ?, 2 tentacles from Day of the Tentacle, Jessica Rabbit?, Marvin the Paranoid Android, yoda, Duke Nukem?, that ghost thingy from Spirited Away, turtle from some game?, Mega Man, Moses, Crab Zombie, Skeletor, Marilyn Monroe, some geek,
.... okay, I'm tired of going through them all... someone else can finish.

All in all, a nice collection. Amazed how well you've put so much recognizable characteristics into such a small space. Bravo!

Really neat.
Most of them are recognizable straight away.
Using too many "really" but, I really like how you managed to pull all those details, (like that tiny Mushu, or Link's shield )
Is that guy next to Terminator, Forrest Gump?

Anyway, Good job on all.

edit:
- Guy next to mario = guybrush
- Next to Marvin (WB one) = Joker
- Next to the Joker = Harley Quinn
- Under Snow White = The woman from the 5th element

Nostalgia attack!  ;)

Mr. T and Leia are my favourites here, but lots of other good stuff here too.
Some few of them may need a bit more work (like the Beast, next to Link) but it's damn hard to get a good likeness when they are this small.

I'm gonna try to guess at some of those not guessed yet.
The guy to the right of the Grinch is Chuck Norris.
The one between Holmes and  Jafar is Abaraham Lincoln
The one between Helsing and Elvis is Duke Nukem (I'm surprised nobody go that one yet)
The one to left of Einstein is Bloodrayne.
The one left of Mr. T is Zorro.
And the one to the right of Indy is a protoss zealot.

There is a couple more I absolutely know I've seen somewhere before but I can't think of any names. My brain ain't working right. :P

Lets see... a red shirt, the Predator, Megaman X, a Zealot, Zoro, Joker, Harley Quin, Barney Fife, Bloodrayne (now THAT'S an odd couple!), and honest Abe. Sorry if I reguessed, I'm going off the list of unguessed sprites on your post.

so small and so many details, I can watch at this for hours :P

OK, I also gonna guess
The one before darthvader is a red rebel (or what's the name?)
The thing next to manny is someone of Unreal or halo, dunno really
Next to Robin Hood is Simon the Sorcerer
next to terminator is Megaman or something like that
Before Mr T is zorro
After Marvin comes Two-Face (or was its name Joker) and after him one of his crewmembers
Before Einstein is the girl from Bloodryan
Before Buzz is Robocop

and after Rapheal isn't that Naruto?

--edit, no it isn't Naruta haha :-[ , it's a german soldier

So easily recognizable with so few pixels. You have a way with colors :)

I find the poses of the shooting people odd, they're leaning forward too much it seems.

Third guy from the top looks like a Star Trek (new generation) character, though the guns aren't held with two hands so it may not be it.

Wow, just, Wow.  That is awesome they are mostly recognizable without having to over exaggerate features, not that you would have had the space for it.  Of them all favorite is Optimus, but I agree that the shooting people all seem like they are bracing for a huge recoil.

Okay, so I'm designing the game they're going to be used in now. Think of a cross between Worms, Unreal Tournament and Lemmings. Before the level starts you'd buy yourself an army of these guys. After it starts you could deploy whoever you need whenever you need them. You can set them to do simple tasks like Defend the Base, Attack the Enemy, Take the Flag. They could be sent in in groups or one at a time. You'd also be able to control one at a time directly with the keyboard, if you controlled a character from a group, everyone from that group would try to emulate what you do.

Each character would have their own specific uses:

Lincoln would have an oratory skill that would power up all friendlies on the map.
Rincewind would be very fast, and always followed closely by the luggage, an extremely deadly mêlée fighter.
Stormtroopers would just be armed meatshields, spraying blaster bolts pell-mell, willy-nilly.
Vader would be a powerful but slow character, tough as well as difficult to hit, and deadly in close quarters.
Cosmo would able to use his suction cup hands to climb to places other characters can't get to.
Lemmings could use their umbrellas to jump off very high places, as well as build walls and stairs wherever you command.
Necromancer would raise the dead as moderately powerful skeletons.
Merlin would have a variety of offensive and defensive spells.
Elvis could use his music to start everyone in a certain radius dancing.
Moses could call down lightning to kill the enemies, or manna to heal friendlies.
Jessica rabbit, Monroe, and Esmeralda could seduce enemy characters into switching teams, with various other stats.
Gump would just wander around the map, activating random events.
Holmes would examine corpses of enemies and inform everyone of weaknesses, improving damage against that type.
Doughboy would be able to take massive amounts of damage.
I think we all know what Chuck Norris would do.

This would be a crazy amount of work and I'd probably need a lot of help, especially programming-wise, but I really really like the idea so far.  :D

Don't attempt to make that game. Even if you find a coder insane enough to code all the different behaviours, min-maxing and balancing the game would be impossible. I can think of simple brute-force (100 stormtroopers) breakage for starters.

and ther was so many characters in the diskworld books and games that the possibilities for level sare endless.

They could be priced, or set into categories (Heavy, light, ranged, special...?) so you would only be able to have so many chars from each category.

Any wargamer knows that balance is the absolutely most difficult thing to have in these games, and if every piece has special abilities, the game gets broken tens of different ways. The brute force thing isn't the only one.

Helm, you make a good point, I figured that a balance could be worked out, but that's easier said than done. I'll try to think up something a bit more workable. Any ideas are welcome!

Good one Ter-o, it's Agent Scully, and there's only one left now! Fidel Castro is the closest guess so far, but not it.

As for Hades' hair, I originally was going to make it blue, but liked the look of the red hair a bit better. I should've made him angrier looking.  :P

Awesome!  So it was "The dread Pirate Roberts".  Also, Kim jong il was one I could recognise but not from where.  Excellent details, and I would much look forward to being optimus and smashing things.
Back from hiatus, just remembered how excellent this community is at forming technique in a fledgeling artist of any kind.

Ooh, looks like the sprites from the old SSI goldbox series of AD&D games.

And now I see the post about making a game out of them! Will be very interesting to see, absolutely lovely quality on the animation as well.

Is Rincewind looking back, though? Granted, always flees from danger, but isn't his philosophy to always look forward so you don't hit your head on a branch? Still a fun sprite, though I'd like to see a bit more "panic", or urgency, in the stride... if that's possible.

Btw, here I found a flash movie, that looks very like the game idea you described :) http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/316045

Interesting carnage notwithstanding, I don't see that having anything in common with that design.

Probably we percieved Pawige's idea different. When I read his post I imagined lots of little people running around on platforms mostly by themselves, killing each other. And that's basically what we see on that swf, but with bigger people and no way to control them.

I thought a bit more like lemmings with AI.
How about a paper-scissors style thing, where certain things are more expensive/harder to get, but beat other weaker things. They can only beat so many before they themselves are beaten.
...? Did I understand the concept right?

I love your ideas!! This would be such a kickass game! I can't wait to see what ideas you have for the rest of the characters!

Oh, and your sprites look awesome! So well designed for such small sprites. I love 'em.  :y:

what I like more is how you made them look so familiar to what they are!
I would like to see some more animation :y:
