[WIP]RoboWhale/Shark/Dolphin Thing

on: November 01, 2006, 06:35:27 am
Just finished playing Metal Slug 3 and got inspired to make a sprite for the PJ Game (yes, it's still on despite the lack of activity).

May I present RoboWhale!
He's still choppy and in greyscale for now but the basis of what I wanted to do is there:

14 colours

Lemme know what you think I should change or add. If all goes well, I will try an attempt at animating him.

As you can read it's greyscale for now, and I think it already look robotic ??? enough

I really like the idea, and can't wait to see it in colour!
in the shadows, lurking.

Your update shows definite improvement...

How about a subtle highlight on the nose, just one shade lighter, or would that be bad since it's already in the water?

The tail is still bothering me. If this was really more side-on, we would hardly be seeing a profile of the tail. Sharks have vertical tails, but whales and Dolphins have horizontal running ones... you would probably just be able to see one side of the fin, and it would droop down slightly, but most likely not both fins. Great so far.

Thanks Pep... youtube'd some footage of whales in the deep to see what you were talking about. You're absolutely correct. Did a quick edit and, though it's still not to my liking, it's more what you were talking of.
Feel free to do your own edit if you think you've a better way of portraying the tail.

Edit: also a quick and choppy test animation for the tail

I guess you're still working on shapes and did not care about texture for now (robots are all about texture I guess even if I'm wrong=)) and unclean lining, so I won't comment on that part.
Tail might looks like that:

And in animation cycle (roughly, a lot depends on body movement=)

Also, just noticed - his side fin should be lower I guess. I'm not sure though.

Might be tough to animate because, I hope you know, unless you animate the entire body, it will look very, very stiff.
Nice so far, though. I imagine this to be in some nice, subtle, desaturated colors, maybe even dull pastels. Either that or some extreme contrast and saturation...
Yeah, complete opposites, I know. But B&W seems like it doesn't suit this piece well.

Fool: Kickass animation! That's what I'm looking to do with it. I'll take your edit and roll with it in an update soon

Xion: I do plan to animate more than just the tail. On the agenda so far is to try and animate the side fins, the upper fin will pop out with some missles (maybe), perhaps having the mouth open up instead and shoot some missles, and basically the whole body moving in some fashion like the tail in Fool's edit. The colours are definitely temporary until I can find a balanced palette.

Thanks for all your input guys!

Sorry about the double post. Had a redesign brainfart and thought to change the tail so it is upright like so:

Edit: and a quick animation to show what I'm doing with the nose bit...
