Feature 02 - Bombsquid

on: October 30, 2006, 10:45:42 pm
Today I started a silhouette of a bombsquid ( :P haha yeah its head is a bomb), I planned not to do any shading, but I was bored and yup I did it, just for fun. Well, it isn't a squid anymore, I really don't know how to make a squid out of my silhouette .

I tried dithering for the first time, it misses depth and I think I really messed some things up, especially the lightsource and I need help with it, because I really want to finish this thingy.

say Hi:

hope to get some advice, thanks in advance :-*

-Edit:

the lightsource is coming from the topleft, and here's the silhouette I was working from

Finished(?):

 :mean: Mwahaha!

Good! but the shading needs work. See the brows of this guy? it looks like the light source is above and to the left. Add some highlight around the top left part of this guys head (and shadows oposite) then dither unless you want to change or the light source (will you eventually light this guy?). i think it'll make a big improvement.

Man.. i had a tough time editing this one. I wouldnt have a clue how to dither it.

now that i think about it.. perhaps a highlight just around the edge of the shaded area to show some ambient (ambient?) lighting.

That looks awesome ;D! I dun't think it's the right format for dithering, so away with it :P, this edit helps me alot! thanks Franky G

If I add some background I can add a ambient lighting indeed

Looking good. Major improvement from the original post. The spark/flame/fuse... thingy... should, I think, be more like it is in Franky's edit. In yours, right now, it looks like a tassel or something because of the outline and the colours you've chosen (which should be brighter, imo; try pure white/really highly saturated yellows).

Nice work. Keep it up. :)

Oh, and I just noticed... assuming that ramp you've included is the actual palette, you could probably stand to use fewer shades. Several of these are near repeats.

Well I did a little edit myself here. Tried to touch up some of the AA and edges, lighting and played a bit with the colors. I gave the picture a pallette as you didn't really seem to have one. I think it had 27 colors which I'm sure you could reduce if you wanted because there was quite a subtle ramp on the "gray".

Anyhow I liked the character and thought you did a pretty good job so here's my edit...

uugh.. those are awesome.  :'(

the choice of colour here is notable. how do you guys do it? at least, whats the theory behind it.

[EDIT:] Ryumaru.. the AA on that is just awesome..
