Feature 02 - Bombsquid

on: October 30, 2006, 10:45:42 pm
Today I started a silhouette of a bombsquid ( :P haha yeah its head is a bomb), I planned not to do any shading, but I was bored and yup I did it, just for fun. Well, it isn't a squid anymore, I really don't know how to make a squid out of my silhouette .

I tried dithering for the first time, it misses depth and I think I really messed some things up, especially the lightsource and I need help with it, because I really want to finish this thingy.

say Hi:

hope to get some advice, thanks in advance :-*

-Edit:

the lightsource is coming from the topleft, and here's the silhouette I was working from

Finished(?):

 :mean: Mwahaha!

Good! but the shading needs work. See the brows of this guy? it looks like the light source is above and to the left. Add some highlight around the top left part of this guys head (and shadows oposite) then dither unless you want to change or the light source (will you eventually light this guy?). i think it'll make a big improvement.

Man.. i had a tough time editing this one. I wouldnt have a clue how to dither it.

now that i think about it.. perhaps a highlight just around the edge of the shaded area to show some ambient (ambient?) lighting.

That looks awesome ;D! I dun't think it's the right format for dithering, so away with it :P, this edit helps me alot! thanks Franky G

If I add some background I can add a ambient lighting indeed

Looking good. Major improvement from the original post. The spark/flame/fuse... thingy... should, I think, be more like it is in Franky's edit. In yours, right now, it looks like a tassel or something because of the outline and the colours you've chosen (which should be brighter, imo; try pure white/really highly saturated yellows).

Nice work. Keep it up. :)

Oh, and I just noticed... assuming that ramp you've included is the actual palette, you could probably stand to use fewer shades. Several of these are near repeats.

Well I did a little edit myself here. Tried to touch up some of the AA and edges, lighting and played a bit with the colors. I gave the picture a pallette as you didn't really seem to have one. I think it had 27 colors which I'm sure you could reduce if you wanted because there was quite a subtle ramp on the "gray".

Anyhow I liked the character and thought you did a pretty good job so here's my edit...

thanks for your help guys, I'm now done with the squid, right now I'm about to start with the background, the edits really helped me through! I actually tried to make a new palette with less nearer colors, but it went wrong somewhere and now I've more colors than ever :'(

- Update edit:

I really dunno what to say

Different sunset  + new water:

First time pixeling a scene, and don't have a clue how to texture the strand, water and clouds. The right cloud looks choppy, and lighting is wrong, anybody care to help me with the scene, I would appreciate it :-[

new:

I fixed the ocean, but I don't really like the reflections of the sun, and the foam(?) from the water, and still have to work on the beach

hmm:

Have mixed feelings about this one

yes, I agree on the beach and I'll try to smoothen things out, although I didn't AA the whole thing were needed ::)

-edit:

Ok, I now call this officially finished, unless there are some disturbing errors:

I have 2 versions, which one do you like better?

The way the sun is cut off looks unnatural. I'm thinking you could buffer between the sun and cloud; maybe warp the shape of the coloud around the sun

Are you sure the sun needs a broken outline? Wouldn't it be better if he diffuses from close shade to close shade? Also, the shadow dither of the bomb could do with a few intermediate shades to the sand as it is. And some features on the bomb can be antialiased further if you so desire.

The head, not being round at all was bugging me, so I did a (kinda rushed, so don't kill me if it aint perfect) fast edit.
Hope it helps though.

Another thing is that you have loads of colors in your palette, especially grays, and most of them unnoticeable unless zooming.
So I guess either use them for AA or just lose them.

Reds could be recycled for the flame so it stands out, but that is more of a personal preference.

Anyway, good luck with further edits etc. It's developing nicely.

Haha, I did this edit in GraphicsGale free edition(first time using it, was fun using hotkeys :P). When I have the money I am going to purchase Pro Motion for sure!

so what to say, finished?

Like most said, I reduced the colourcount by retouching some colours, first it had 57 colours :o, now it has 42. I don't know if it's still to much, but I tried to recycle as much colours as possible. But I've to say I left the bomb intact as possible whenever I tried to remove near colours, it looks more dithered and rougher. I also tried to recycle the red into the flame like Panda said, but than the muzzle would stand out too much. Thank for the help everyone I really learned from this process, if there are some (small?) things left that aren't correct, please point me to it.

Old:                   42 colours:

Reminds me of a zelda creature. I think it looks good except for that 4-5 pixel block of nothing at the top. Theres too much lighting on the side that's facing the viewer, especially if they're on a beach and the sun is setting in the background.

Yeah - remove the top border.  Dogmeat - the lightsource is from the fuse which is about an inch above his head.

In that case, i think the light from the fuse needs work as well, I thought it was some random light effect in the sky. Regardless of the fuse, I still think the lighting needs an overhaul, but not necessary if you're sick of this piece.

Am I the only one who thinks the black outlines on the tentacles look out of place? The background had no outlines, and the bomb-head only has dark lines on one side.

(Good job none the less though)  :y:

I removed the top border, got rid of the outline of the tentacles (I always thought that it was the blue what was wrong), I the reduced colours to 34. I think the light looks ok, because it's outside so I guess there's always a key and fill light. Thanks everyone for the usefull help!

It will be in the chest at some point, prolly a week or two. Thing is that if something is featured that does not mean that the artist can not edit anymore if he wants to.

Once something is in the chest it gets shrinkwrapped and hermetically sealed

Without the great help given, I would never had a chance to bring this piece this far! I won't further edit, because sometimes you've to let things what they are, however working on this was just a lovely thing to do as I had only the silhouette as an concept and evolved this into something what I never had in mind from the beginning. I'll take this piece with me as a great learning process into the pixel arts, it's the beginning of a long road which I look forward to.. ;)
