Star Wars pixels (newbie)

hey!

I did these last night. I have no prior experience, I just was inspired by some pixel videos on youtube and wanted to try it.
Its quite fun to do! I may try more and get better.


I probably made a ton of beginner mistakes, but yeah lol

Really nice first go!
I'd be consistent on your outlining to give them co-existence harmony.
Also, watch the feet/ground line as the 1 pixel step difference really affects their viewing angle, in turn, the viewing angle consistency will make them more believable.

Left to right, no. 3, 4 and 5 have outlines when the rest do not.

The most impressive one is the gonk droid, the palette and the shapes are really well done, I will be looking forward to see your next submissions

Yes I agree on the outlines.
The way I worked was (because I am new and expected to suck) I did not worked longer than 20 minutes on each figure.
Even when it sucked I moved on to the next to keep going and learn a bit faster. That way I did all of these in a couple of hours and noticed improvement right away. That's also the reason I dropped the outline cause I felt it was limiting my room for showing detail. The ones with the outlines were the first I did, then I did the other ones.

What do you mean with the ground line? Should it be a straight line, no detail ? Or do you mean the figures are not lined up evenly horizontally? Not sure what you are trying to explain

I am considering doing more just to learn. and maybe do "sets" like a "Jabba's Palace" set or a "Hoth" set.
Im sure this has been done many times before but its fun to do.

I have never animated before. Honestly I only started doing this yesterday out of boredom
I looked into the better tools like GraphicsGale but im on Mac and have no Windows machine in the house.

Im going "no outline" now with the next ones. Ive also recorded while working so maybe I can post a timelapse video sometimes.

Started on some Jabba's Throne Room characters. That Sly Snootles is a pain in the but to get right. LOL

Yo, quick thought related to presentation rather than the art.

The canvas color in your video was part of the image.
You worked directly with that base color to determine your character color choices.
I understand the appeal of going borderless.
But by posting the characters on transparent, the Pixelation backdrop has blown them out a lot.
Color readability is relative to the other colors it shares space with.

If you want to show art on top of potentially any color, make sure it can handle it.
Or include the original canvas which makes them nicely readable.
Or use a more creative border approach if you really want to escape the square.

May not seem like too big of a deal.
But considering this improves viewer experience.
Will help you control and retain the feeling of your art.
And minimizes the influence of outside forces affecting your intended visuals.

Yeah totally agree I noticed that too. Like I said im a total newbie
Its quite interesting to see how I solid background color makes the pixel art "sit" well or totally not at all.
I found that changing the bg color later is tricky, and now I know why   It makes sense.
I was also trying to add like a tilemap background to Jabba's Palace but somehow it doesn't work as well as a solid bg.
I will keep trying and learning
