Feedback on Pixel Art Anatomy

on: May 03, 2017, 03:17:30 am
Anybody experienced in anatomy out there? Is this the correct way to highlight the difference between the male and female figure? Thanks.

The male and female figure are essentially the same. Women tend to have slightly wider hips and men tend to have slightly wider chest and shoulders. Even then depending on the person that may not hold true. Additionally fat deposits on the waist of a man but all around the body of a woman. I would suggest not treating them as separate, so long as you know what features will make a character look more masculine or feminine.

Look into more detail at the shape of the spine and how the head connects to the torso. Especially the collar bones are too pronounced, generally the rib cage slopes a bit, this is also changing the shape of the breast to be far too bulbous at the top. The female posture generally is close to being right, try pulling the torso back a pixel. The male legs are a little more proportionally accurate.

Her breasts seem to be coming out of her chin :) Both torsos could do with some re-adjusting, their necks seem to only be defined in the back and not front. Your female also feels like she has a hunchback, you could flatten it by a pixel. Otherwise their lower halves seem okay!

Thanks for the replies. I tried to edit it based on your feedback. Something just feels weird about how flat the female's stomach is now.

I think if you pull the line for the neck back one pixel and start the slope of the breast just a tiny bit lower it would all work better.... the stomach looks fine to me this way. :y:

Thanks guys, I'm pretty happy with how this turned out. Hopefully this will help with my realistic character sprites.

Just some quick thoughts:

- Necks usually connect to the back part of the bottom of the head
- Female hands are usually smaller
- Breasts hang a bit too much for my tastes
- Male looks a bit too thin
- Male torso/leg proportion seems a bit odd

Working in such small scale and outlines is not easy. I suggest using a higher resolution or working without outlines.

I might have overdone the slimming of the female leg...
Nice. Now do the whole thing with the EGA palette!

Everything except the boob thing's true. Boobs have a bit of sag, most people don't mind if you draw em differently but if you're aiming for a more realistic pixel you'll want to keep the overhang. Nothing's as jarring in a realistic art style quite as hard as gravity-defying chesticles.
