Your Favorite Artists and Why

on: February 22, 2017, 12:04:55 am
Title says it all. I am just curious to know everyone's favourite artist an know why they like them. I might grow fond of them myself and learn from them.

I am still unsure of whom I like but I certainly find the works of William-Adolphe-Bourguereau

Myself and nature. Because looking at the "finished" art of others does not bring me the same experience and non-verbal insights as going through the process of a work in progress myself and the feeling of a deep understanding that comes from watching something change or grow or decay also does not come from looking at/consuming the "finished" works of the great masters of the present and of the past.

I do enjoy the art of others more while it is not "finished", watching them create it(which is easily possible nowadays via streaming). Dead artists of the past and their art feels more alive to me in unfinished doodles, sketches and studies and not so much in their epic and carefully planned paintings and sculptures.

End results, "finished" works can be very interesting/stunning/marvelous to look at as well, but the raw and unpolished stuff, the stuff in which the thought and observation process of the artist is visible and where the imperfection of their raw visual memory and imagination, what they can draw without spending hours/days/weeks where they mostly copy from reference, becomes apparent, feels much more alive to me.

So yeah, that's why I pick my "self" as my favorite artist and it is not about quality of results or about ego(of which their might still be some left because ego is really hard to get rid of in a world in which we are conditioned from day zero on to compete rather than to cooperate) but simply because feeling the process(with all the ups and downs) is not possible by looking at "finished" stuff, only by doing it oneself or by experiencing nature itself.

Maybe I'll drop some names of dead and alive artists whose finished works I like later.

not sure about the rules here but a NSFW (not safe for work) warning might be nice, as loading indecent "images" of children is likely to get me in trouble even if it's probably not a sackable offence. I am allowed to use the internet at work for personal use to a certain extent so I'm only partly responsible :D

but anyway, I really like the artist H.R.R Giger but curious if I can post "anything" by him :P

for those who don't know his work, he's probably best known for his work on the "Alien" movie franchise including set design for "Prometheus", a more recent spin-off movie. Below is one of his paintings I like.

@Jehannum: put it in a spoiler and add a NSFW tag there

I'd imagine no work would fire someone for viewing the images in this thread. Those are certainly not 'indecent images of children' and shouldn't need to be marked NSFW, as they are fine art. But do as you wish.

As for the topic, my favorite has always been van Gogh. There is just something about his paintings that resonates with me. His style brings to mind the adjectives bold, harsh, hard, masculine.
His expressive use of colors and defined brushstrokes actually parallel techniques used in pixel art in some ways, especially his more pointillism-esque works.

To me this is the ultimate of his self-portraits: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/4c/Vincent_van_Gogh_-_Self-Portrait_-_Google_Art_Project_(454045).jpg

Perhaps cheating a bit since he's a good friend of mine, but one of my top inspirations right now is my friend Apollo, also known as Fluxom in some parts.
While he primarily does graphic design and sketchy online comic stuff, he's really good at coming up with  some neat designs and I take a lot of aesthetic ideas from him.

Here's some of his sketchier work from his various comic things on tgchan!

And a sample of their more put-together work!

I also take a lot of inspiration from people like Jhonen Vasquez and cartoonists like Rob Renzetti, the former best known for Invader Zim and the latter for My Life as a Teenage Robot.
(and of course all the wonderful things done by Maxwell Atoms, Craig Mccracken, and Genndy Tartakovsky.)
