Dark Child

on: February 02, 2017, 03:13:15 am
Hello everyone, this is my first post, i'm very happy to be part of this community.
I'm working on a game where the main character is a dark child with powers.
I want to make it cute and dark at the same time, very dark.
So far i've got this:

https://s29.postimg.org/yn99paeo7/Dark_child4.png

Could you please give me your feedback on how to improve it?
I'm aiming of course for a 2d side scroller game, low to med res. Enemies should be 2 or 3 times bigger than the main character.
Also, it may look cartoonish but i'm looking for a more serious, close to reality model.

Thanks in advance!

First, post at original resolution! Makes it FAR easier to edit.
Second, if you're going for a more realistic style you might need to put some work into learning anatomy first.
It can be slow going, but if you need a quick and dirty method the anime building-blocks method can help as a stopgap.

(also, to embed click the mona lisa icon on the left and stick the url between the two bracket tags!)

Adviceways, think about your proportions more. She's got a big head and tiny noodle arms, spaghetti legs, and a diminutive tube pasta body. Try to match those proportions better, either by making the head smaller or the body bigger!
You can also get away with not having much of a face, many pixel artstyles convey faces through single-pixels for eyes. Starbound is a good example for this art style, and I've seen even smaller styles forgo faces entirely. Experiment, and play around with google! You can find EXCELLENT resources there! I frequently search up pixel art with a variety of other things ("dog," "Castle," etc) simply to find new things to try!

Hey thanks so much for your prompt answer.
I tried clicking on the monalisa but the tags don't appear :( Could you paste them in your next post so i can use them from there?
If i understood you correctly, you want me to post the original resolution of the image which is roughly 40x30 pixels? I'm inserting my new versión in that size, please let me know if that's not what you asked for.

In this new versión i changed the head's size a Little bit and her eyes. Do you think i should fix her legs and arms as well?
Regarding her eyes again, should i add one more pixel on the left eye? (I saw it in some sprites over the web).

I'm also attaching a draft of an enemy. These "agents" should be 2x or 3x her size. Do you think it's art look is too different from the girl, like if they were from different total games?

Thanks so much again for your advice and tips :)

On your last question, yes, I do. I think you should match the style as well as you can, including the facelessness. Your sprite is also leaning back somewhat, try to fix that by moving the head and torso forward !

I'm gonna try making the girl a Little bit smaller or with less detail i guess, in order to match them. I don't wanna remove her eyes, that's one thing.
Anyway, i'll post a new versión as soon as possible, thank you!!

If that's the case then you might want to give the man eyes or, if you're going for a more spooky angle, you could work that facelessness in as an aspect of the enemies as a whole.
