[WIP][C+C] Need help with shading a character

on: November 15, 2016, 10:36:02 am
Hello, can I have some critiques on this character here? Especially the shading.
Some information:
-I don't intend to make legs for him, this is sort of a talking animation.
-Light source is in front of him and to the right a bit (indicated in the image).
-It is supposed to be viewed at 200% so I'd avoid using too much dithering.
-He is overweight.
-The band under his stomach is a belt.
-Hands are being worked on (his left hand is supposed to hold a toy bag).
-The shoulder mount is the gun holder, which is being worked on.

Progress should be updated over time.
Thank you.

Added the gun.
Is the shading on his beard alright?

I'm not sure I would have the shading on he beard next to the gun go that high up as it seems the light source is above and to the left, not directly to the left. It would also break up that solid shade which would look better
Here to learn pixel art.  Feedback always appreciated.

I really like the character design. Never seen something like this. *pewpew*
There is so much space you can fill, though. You can give his jacket a stitching or fill his pockets with stuff.
The pockets doesnt look symmetric. And his left shoulder looks a little odd thanks to to metal-like shading.
But all in all this looks pretty interesting.

Thank for helping, guys!
Considered:
  • gun's shadow on beard.
  • jacket stitching (not sure if done correctly)
  • fill pockets with stuff
Also, changed the shading on the left arm a bit.

Added hand.

With bag (placeholder)

How's the hand?

this is super late but he has super skinny arms for such a jolly fat fella, usually those of more generous proportions have flabby arms.
PSA: use imgur

Naah, I think his arms look fine. The whole character has this robotic like look. He is Santa from the model kit. And that's why his arms are this skinny. ::)

Considered:
  • flabby arms
  • not too flabby arms
Thank, guys!
I think it looks better this way.
Also, toybag is finished.
How's the shading? Is the shape too smooth?

I'm back with some progresses.
-Added background.
-Changed lighting color (I missed some pixels which have old color, anyway I can find them more easily?)
Foreground is a bar desk.
Also, should I make the background detailed or simple like below?
