[C+C] A disembodied head, AKA nothing of note.

on: September 12, 2016, 05:48:10 pm
I tried making a  little portrait for practice, I can see my mistakes, the proportions are off on the eyes, the shape of her head also looks like a yam

The coloring and shading are super rudimentary, and something I have to learn a lot more about.

I'm happy for about 2hrs from the initial sketch (which was terrible) to this, (which I consider just a sketch as well)

She was supposed to have a body as well, but this took a long time already.

All feedback is welcome.

Very cool.

What bugs me is that the lighting is off.

You are very observant to see the highlights on the hair.
But compared to where the light falls on the face, it doesn't make sense.

Same with the speck of light in the eyes. Where should the light hit it?

Think if you shined a flashlight on the face where the light would go.

Thank You! @Rydin, You're right I actually flip flopped a lot on where I should light it, I think i need to start doing, those shade ball exercises.

@PPD Oh, man! That's what I imagined when I first tried to sketch it! You always knock it out of the park.

Ok here's the update! I spent all morning on this and took in your comments. I think this time her breasts are in the wrong place  :P

Also PPD, your drawing seems a lot less pointy at the edges than mine, but I think that's something I just have to get an eye for.

Actually, I think it might be more the torso and some of the shapes at fault here. I did a revision, it's a gif so you can see what I changed easier.

I did some edits to the face too, to give the eyes a more natural shape and throw in some of the usual topography (our eyes usually cast a shadow between them and the bridge of the nose, for example), in addition to changing that bit of muscle that goes around the back of our neck between our shoulders, good instinct having that in there it just needed to go left a bit!
I also rounded out the breasts some and pulled the torso out to the left.

If I were you I would spend hours refining the edge of the hair.

This is a basic start to what I mean, but I'm being modest with what can be done here to make the image more crisp.

It's and endless tunnel if you start down this path, and the hair will never look crisp enough. Such is pixel art. Good luck.
