Dream sweet [WIP, Help me please!]

on: October 07, 2006, 08:39:12 pm

I was trying to finish this before I posted it, but I'm completely stuck on the hair and tree branch. I cast away all cares for palette conservation, but I'll unify it when I'm done. Please help, edits welcome!

I realize that the already done branch looks wierd and flat, but I'll fix that later.

C&C, now!

Hey I like the color choices and the overlapping shades. The theme of grasping/coiling is kind of sensual. Neat.

My biggest concern is the forehead, it should be much larger.

I love it. I have a strange liking for it with the small forhead...i know it's not anatomically correct but it has some sort of appeal...

The nose could be smaller too.

Very nice work :y:

Hmm... It seems pixel art is turning into abstarct looking art, and for no use... Im concerned. Pretty good though. :y:

Seriously WTF, just because people like experimenting and trying out new things it doesnt mean a whole medium is turning into "Abstarct" art.  Push the boundaries beyond 32x32 sprites.  And why are you concerned about a scene thats being going on longer than you've been alive?

Great work Xion, awesome pallette.  I think there should be more ambience on the back of her head though.

Edit: damn those typos!

Why the deuce would you be concerned? Because people decided they can do more than pump out more than the same old sprites?

There's a nice off-topic discussion right there, but do it in another thread. Please keep this about Xion's piece. Thanks.

This is really nice, Xion. I'm especially digging what's going on with the purple, the stars and the whole tree base thing.

Now, I'm not sure what style you're going for here exactly, so keep in mind that these points may be null. That said, I think the face could go for a bit of tweaking anatomy wise. Thus, a quick and dirty edit:

I'm not exactly sure what I did to it, but I think a big part of it had to do with the forehead/nose. They just seemed way too large in comparison to the jaw/chin. Either that, or the chin was too small :P Anyway, I basically just squashed the face a bit, vertically, and shaved a little off the tip of the nose. Like I said, if the face (as you currently have it) was a stylistic thing, just ignore this.

Sweet stuff, regardless. Keep at it.  :y:

Nice edit Tremulant. I would put some light on his/her cheeks, but I'll wait until I better see the where the lightsource is.

One thing this needs though is a second diagonal. At the moment the current (and only) diagonal in the picture is going from the face and up towards the top of the tree. With all the mass in the bottom right corner, it needs something equal in the top left corner to get a second diagonal and create harmony. (Sorry if it sounds corny, I'm just using the expressions I've been taught.)

As I can't know if everyone knows about lines/diagonals in composition, I'm linking to wiki just in case: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Composition_%28visual_arts%29
Check under 'Lines'.

Looking good so far.  :y:

Actually, to me this piece is about motion, and creating two strong diagonals is the fastest way to make a piece feel solid., though i agree that balance in those corners will help, adding something to the top left and subtracting from the bottom right.  alternatively, you could go for a trinity in your composition, but that would require some real pushing around and redrawing

OT: lol about that wiki article, they chose a horrible example for the rule of thirds.  The bottom needs to be brought up and either the right side extended or the left side brought in before the composition will start to show any strength.
A mistake is a mistake.
The same mistake twice is a bad habit.
The same mistake three or more times is a motif.

Agreed. Didn't read that part.

I understand what you mean, but as it stands now, the way the hair is connected to the branch is not a very fluid motion. (In my eyes of course.)

I was not suggesting to use a static line, but rather give the eye a second line to balance out what I feel is a very un organic diagonal. If the line could flow more in a curve from the head, to the branch and swing down the treetrunk, then I would agree. It works more like a rope at the moment. I can't make an edit at the moment, but I'll update with one later to show what I mean.

I agree.
Only thing i can idd with that: leave the piece alone for a while and try doing it again another day with a different view on it.
It looks like a complicated piece wich needs some mind cracking, that doesn't work 24/7.

Thanks, everyone for the great crits. I'll try to incorporate as much as I can in the update.

Trem: I like the edit, but the large chin makes her look kind of...manly. I like what you've done with the eye and nose, though. Thanks.

Snake + Adarias: Thanks for the info about Diagonals. I'll try to fix some of that stuff, mmkay? But until then I need some ideas as to what should go in the upper-left corner. Maybe another stream of stars?

I'll try to take care of that if it doesn't entail too much work.

Everyone else: Thanks much for y'all comments and whatnot. I'll try to update asap. (Which, in fact, might not be 'till the weekend.)

Oh, and BTW, I still need help with the hair. It's something quite new to me and I'm not sure how to go about it.
