Anatomy/Posing Practice Ft. BIG

on: August 09, 2016, 05:42:04 am

A lot of focus was on proper sizing, so a lot of the 8 heads proportion thing.  Otherwise, developing the personality and trying to show it through the poses.  The first image is based on stuff I found when I looked up, "Korra Muscles," and the second was, "Girl stretching arms," so that was the kind of reference for each, but they're both freehand.

Various fixes here, most time-consuming one was aligning the light-source better, tweaking shading, and removing the extra dark tone along the skin.
BIGGEST one, though, was raising the waist of those pants. You really gotta focus on that, you're getting better at it but the crotches on your pantaloons are still hanging too low more often than not.

I also gave the left one an elbow (and some more muscle for that flex) on her bent arm and tweaked more of the shading on the clothing on both.

Getting there, then...

Otherwise made this.  Figuring out cloth physics and clothing.  Might add a pattern to the skirt in a future edit, but wanted to see how just a basic color looked.

Good line of action, but still struggling with limbs a bit. Arms are good here, by my eye, but the leg positioning looked off so I made some corrections here:

Do some studies on bone structure. Google is an EXCELLENT resource, and understanding how the bones interlock and function underneath all those muscles, organs, and skin make for a great mental asset to have when posing and keeping things consistent.
Another resource i can recommend is the Terawell posedoll program, it has all kinds of sliders for muscle mass and facial structure and could help out as a reference material. It's kind of built for anime producers, but that seems to be where you want to focus so it shouldn't be much issue and if you want to do more realistic stuff there's options for that too!

I tried out Posedoll a while back and never really did anything with it...

Man, was that a mistake.

The silhouette feature seems super useful for what I'm doing, as shown here.  The intent was a pose saying something like, "Behold!" and I feel that this communicates that pretty well.  The chest is the only place where I'm not too happy...  For something supposedly used for anime producers, there isn't a great selection of breasts.

And just so it's clear, the yellow spots on the outfit are meant to be mostly transparent.

Yeah, that's certainly one shortcoming it has. The other is the seeming inability to resize hands and feet, makes it pretty awkward to use for design purposes.
I'm not quite getting the transparency effect, just looks like stripes. Try doing some crosshatching on it, make it look like a mesh?

The thing I went for with the yellow is that I just did what I would have done if there was nothing there, but I still don't know if that works...

I also worked a bit more based on PixelPiledriver's edit.  There was a lot I liked, mostly the main body shape and shading, but I stuck with the matching legs and didn't use that yellow color you put on the skin.  And yeah, it was a presenting motion more than a playing one.

Used another DesignDoll pose to try and go for a character with a different body type.  Blondie is supposed to be really tall/filled out, and this one is supposed to be a good head shorter, and also a bit heavier.

Also has a false arm, so that's why it's like that, but I'm more focused on the shading of the body/limbs.

Left leg is thicker than right leg. Try to fix that. Before you use designdoll more try to base your work more off photos, designdoll can't achieve the same level and is best used more as a quick visual aid rather than a full reference if you can find better material through google.
Here's one I found that's close to yours.
